Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

New 2016 ThinkPads announced:

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I would shell out like crazy for a laptop to replace my x220 in a few years, especially if I could get a nicer screen (perhaps 16:10 instead of 16:9 too) but they're never going to make a new one with the keyboard I love.

Is there any other way to turn the laptop on? a keys combo or something?

would be great to turn my expresscard bay into something useful.
also, what's the difference between the first one and this:

>>
>>52353937
I would describe it as usable. There's nothing particularly special or impressive about it. If a good screen is important to you and you can afford to give up a bit of portability, consider a T520 instead. 15" Thinkpads have always had far better screens than 14" ones.

Never actually had a laptop; thinking of getting a T420 for some general purpose activities (word processing, chinese cartoons, shitty indie games, light programming). Thinking specifically of getting: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201348514763

Kinda worried by the "Showing minor signs of use, the odd mark, scratch, buff to be expected. May have minor cracks to plastics" as I rarely buy preowned products - should this be okay or is it something to worry about? Might be able to get it cheaper somewhere else, but I'm willing to pay this much. Should order it tomorrow if this seems fine.

message the seller and ask for a CDI.

if the seller doesn't get you one, and you don't mind taking a risk then buy it, if it is near or at the read limit, file a claim with ebay, if they deny it, file a claim with paypal, if they deny it, file a claim with your cc.

it's pretty much impossible to not get your money back if you get screwed over. you probably won't even have to file a claim with paypal or your cc if things go wrong, ebay is very buyer oriented

I've done it myself. Just take your fingernail to corner and peel it off. Its a thick sticker. When I get home, I'll upload a pic of my smooth trackpad. You should disable the trackpad in bios anyway, the trackpoint is so much better once you get used to it.

The voltage difference is minuscule. The trackpoint uses less and its much faster. You also don't have to worry about your wrist accidentally brushing across the trackpad when typing.

T520 has a better screen, but the size difference between 14" and 15" Thinkpads is bigger than you might think. 15" Thinkpads are some seriously massive motherfuckers. In terms of portability, my T420 feels like a closer relative to my X220 than it does to my T510.

>>

>>
>>52359070
You'll need one with the dedicated nvidia graphics if you want to play anything on it. None of the other specs really matter, but I would also strongly recommend finding the 1600x900 screen. If you're in the US, it shouldn't be too hard to find what you're looking for. I got my fully loaded T420 listed with 900p screen, dedicated graphics, and fingerprint reader for $180 shipped.

Sometimes sellers fail to list the dedicated graphics as they can be a bit hard to detect outside of opening the machine or properly installing Windows with drivers, which most sellers don't bother with. You're taking a gamble though and I wouldn't bother unless you really can't find any more specific listings.

Repaste your CPU and GPU and use TPFanControl if you're not already. Repasting the T420 is relatively easy, I would even call it a pleasant job. Just follow the hardware maintenance manual to the letter and keep track of your screws and you shouldn't have any problems. Set TPFanControl to manual on a low setting, I usually use 3. It barely makes any noise but keeps temps down nicely. Jack it up to the max when you're under heavy load and you shouldn't ever see temps over 80C.

Here's the thing: there's a W520 on my local classifieds for about $490 USD. Import tax and customs fees add about another $80-$90 USD if I try to buy off ebay, which is uneconomical as fuck, where the cheapest ones currently up have shitty condition as well.

Its specs are
>i7 2760QM Quad-Core 2.4GHz
>16GB RAM
>500GB hybrid SSD
>Windows 10 that I will downgrade to 7 and dualboot some distro

I'm not sure about the gpu but if it isn't I will try to haggle down the price if it doesn't have it. Should that be the case, I would buy a new mobo from ebay with the 2gb gpu (I want to use it for 3d rendering) and quad core i7.

It's the first time it's behaving like that, any particular reason?

You say that but when I compare it to some 15.6" consumershit it seems to be smaller dimensions somehow.
>>
What is the oldest thinkpad with a 4:3 screen that is capable of displaying 200 pages pdf and editing a 100 pages word document? (Thinkpad x21 or x41? If yes, what distros should I try?) Basically I want to write my thesis on a Thinkpad.

T420 with SSD here.

5 sec boot time.
File operations (opening large folders /transfering files) are super fast now.
Big programs (Photoshop, Ableton, etc) open much faster.
My laptop is dead silent 90% of the time. (I haven't realised how comfy this is until I got the SSD.)

So basically the SSD meme is true just like the Thinkpad meme. I say go for it. A reputable 120 GB SSD is dirt cheap nowadays and it's supposed to be enough for your OS and programs.

I have this keyboard in my T400. Got it for free from Lenovo about two weeks after ordering the computer new in 2009. I bitched at the customer service rep about the flex in the original being "what I expect from a Dell". This was back when Lenovo actually cared about their product, I guess.

I disagree that this is the best keyboard ever, though. It felt a little mushy to be honest. The one that came with my T410s (and now lives in my W520) is like pure sex. Crisp, solid, great feedback overall. Beats the shit out of the T60/T61 keyboard.

This. The T520/T530 screen is noticeably better than the one in the T420, and the W series screen is better still.

I have an E550 at my new office. To be honest, it's not much worse than the T440 I had at my old company. Yeah, WXGA on a 15.6" panel really sucks (why the fuck do businesses keep doing this) but overall the quality of the screen is similar, if not slightly better. The overall quality of the laptop is not appreciably worse than the T440, but it's definitely worse than my pre- xx40 series Thinkpads.

I don't know what the fuck I'm going to do when even the xx30 series is obsolete. If the Thinkpad Classic dies in development, then I really don't see much of a difference between the new ones and Macs. Here's to hoping the T460p is a god damn sexual tyrannosaurus.

i5 with disabled dedicated GPU reporting. I've noticed no change in graphical performance because the difference between the two cards is pretty insignificant for anything that isn't CAD related. You should be able to do it through the power manager. At least that's what I remember from my T400 running Win 7.

Unless the deal is excellent, avoid:
R-series
L-series
SL-series
Z-series
Edge/E-series

These are cost-cut versions of ThinkPads which are thicker, are made of lower quality plastics and are less durable. Terrible hinges on the Edge series especially, some Edges have electrical shorting issues.

ThinkPads used to have a LCD rollcage, but Lenovo removed it for weight/cost savings after the T400.

HP is still using them.

The shells of thinkpads ARE some kind of magnesium alloy and function as the rollcage itself.

That's why they're cold to the touch and heat in the sun, because they're metal.

HP's have the metal on the inside but the exterior is plastic.

I was disappointed to find out the lid on my X230 was such thin metal it may as well have been crappy plastic. Due to how I normally carry my laptop around in my toolbag I ended up getting damage to the screen in just a few months.

When I ordered a new screen I reinforced the lid with a thin layer of carbon fiber, it seriously increased the stiffness and didn't add more than a couple ounces. Glad there was enough room inside to do that.

ThinkPads use CFRP shells with magnesium rollcages inside:

http://blog.lenovo.com/images/legacy/files/2011/07/Lenovo_Voice_Vol5e.pdf

http://www.3ds.com/fileadmin/customer-stories/import/pdf/SIMULIA-Lenovo.pdf

The X series use to be a little different as the outer shell was the rollcage as well, it was made out of magnesium.

Elitebooks have aluminium shells with magnesium rollcages:
http://www.notebookreview.com/notebookreview/hp-elitebook-8560p-review/

I know, I've own a T60, T420, X220 and a HP 8570p. You seem a little on the defensive if someone starts to question the whole 'ThinkPad durability' thing.

Lid is magnesium, top part is plastic for a RF window.

Early X220 lids had a problem where the RF window separated from the lid.

The base is magnesium, it also acts as the rollcage.
>>
>>52370256
According to Lenovo Reference sheets,
the x230 case material is magnesium for the screen shell and bottom, carbon reinforced plastic for the antennas in the to and palmrest and normal plastic for the batery cases.

My laptop is a x230, hence my defensiveness when you said it was plastic (you were talking in general, I was too, my bad also).

I find it pretty durable 2bh.
