I put a new crystal and a commie bund strap on grandpa's old Vostok. Too bad he died this morning. So I guess it's mine now. He got a look at it a few days ago when I mentioned it, but I'm not sure how much he got of that (Alzheimer's + TBI surgery). Also have his beat to shit Poljot in pieces on my workbench, but I'm not sure how I'll replace the balance without a staking tool nor an anvil.

On a lighter note: got two 50's Cornavins, both running, one in beautiful condition, and another that's so beat it's more like a parts donor, my guess is it was involved in a fall off a motorbike. Pic is of course the better one.
The other watch is a Ruhla digital, I also got two of those. This red one has a good movement so it's a donor for the orange one (in pieces) that is better looking externally. I'll have both running once they teach how to repair/replace/calibrate balance springs. Movement is an atrocious pin-pallet monstrosity, and they're chunky and heavy as fuck, but I have to repair at least one since both parents unironically want to wear them.

which GS movement do you wish to adquire?
A spring drive will keep perfect time while Hi-beat and other mechanicals will have some slight deviation.
bear in mind that GS is known for their incredible precision, even compared to most swiss brand at the same price point. So unless you are a maniac about a watch being late one second per day you shall be fine.
If second hand check when it has last been checked by a competent watchmaker though.

Unless you're rich (and a $5000 raise being a big deal means you are definitely not rich), I'd be careful with secondhand King/Grand Seikos, parts are going to be a bitch to obtain, especially anything hi-beat, good luck finding replacement parts for that unless you speak fluent technical Japanese or just want to buy a bunch of donor watches on ebay.
Vintage swiss and american is always a much safer bet when it comes to affordable long term maintenance.

If an eBay seller shows the movement, and lists it's specifications, it's less likely to be fake than if the seller is vague and doesn't show the movement.
Plus it's nice to know the condition of the movement, which can often fare worse than the dial or case

You can have a nice mechanical watch for generations with the occasional tuning and oiling. Which you can have done for you for a nominal fee, or learn to do it yourself.
Quartz only needs batteries unless it is kinetic or solar. But they can lose accuracy over long periods. Probably last at least a decade without losing or gaining more than a few seconds.

You mean a fee that could either be more than the value of the watch (see: your average seiko/orient) or not (see: your average ALS). It really depends on the multiple of $100-500 (depending on the movement) the watch is valued at.
The other problem with mechanicals is that they really don't like magnets or impacts. Not a big deal for some people but if you have an active lifestyle or you work in IT or engineering, it is a big deal. Enjoy taking your watch to the watchmaker for degaussing because you accidentally set your watch on top of a stack of hard drives.

high end ones on the other hand really are jewelry, collectibles and so on, rather than something you buy for the usefulness, so comparing them to quartz in that way isn't very wise
the point mostly stands for the cheap-but-not-quite-that-cheap level where you'd have good quartz seikos competing with SARBs, Steinharts and I don't know, something else in the sub-$600 or maybe $1000 range.

Just an anecdote, but my mechanical watch has stayed consistently in sync with time.gov since I got it in november. At most it'll be 2 or 3 seconds off in a given day, so I'll let it rest in a certain position to correct for that error overnight. Maybe I just got lucky with this movement, who knows.

1. I don't care when it comes to my everyday watches (and they all have acrylic crystals so I can just polish out small scratches which do appear all the time, I basically polish my main watches crystal once a month or something)
2. For the watches I care for, I just don't wear them when doing risky activities
also helps that most of the time my watch will be under a shirt sleeve
