18 y/o high school and working on CCNA. Any tips for studying? I'm also about to take the A+, but basically have that down.
>>
Is the CCNA just as broad as network+. Im studying into N+ material and it sure is as they say a mile wide and a foot deep
>>
>>52349048
Make sure to do plenty of labs.
Chris Bryant Udemy vids are good
Lammle/Odom books are good.
I wouldn't suggest using a braindump as study..but use it to verify your knowledge. It helps also give you a feel for the test layouts.

How long do people typically prepare for Net+ and Sec+ for? My employer is giving me a month.
>>
>>52349151
I'm guessing you aren't starting from scratch? Do you have to attain both in a month or each one you're getting a month?

Both can be done in a month. I think I studied everyday for about ~3-4weeks for my Net+

I can't speak for Sec+ since I don't have it but I think a month would be a reasonable time.. perhaps 2.

Has anyone taken the CompTIA's CASP?

There has been grumbling about wanting some of our team to take this fucking thing.

>>52349100
CCNA is more broad than Network+. It only covers around half of what the CCNA does and would probably be equivalent to the CCENT.
>>
>>52349014
Was this an entry level position??
>>
>>52350671
The position I applied for was considered entry. All I had was A+ and Net+

I just passed my A+ certification two days ago.
I didn't bother use a dump for the 220-801, there was just a lot of memorization.
For the 220-802, I studied a lot, mostly from Professor Messer and then used one of these braindumps to confirm I knew the material. The first practice test I did I managed to get an 85%.
I passed the 220-802 comfortably within 23 minutes.

Fell for what meme? I got my A+ certification knowing that it's going to take a lot more if I want to be making more than 13 dollars an hour.
The tech school I go to prepares us for the A+ and an internship, along with a job placement program... Only half the class or so actually bothers to get it, but according to the teachers, they are usually the ones who end up without jobs.
I just needed something to make my resume stand out slightly more than the other half.
>>
>>52355615
And you'll probably get a job, no worries. HR just needs to put a check next to your name that you got cert X, that's all they care about in the end. But don't ever believe for yourself you stand out by holding a worthless piece of paper anyone could've earned through blatant cheating.
>>
>>52355685
The thing that really pisses me off. More than half of my class don't apply themselves at all to learn the material.
It was my teacher who provided us with the VCE files to "check" we understand the material.
Now most of our class is studying straight from the VCE files instead of actually learning.

When an interview is given for IT, do they generally test your knowledge as to what you know about the topic? Or will people still be able to get a job even though they just blatantly cheated?
>>

Great, I was in a similar position a couple of years back. How naive we both once were.

>When an interview is given for IT, do they generally test your knowledge as to what you know about the topic? Or will people still be able to get a job even though they just blatantly cheated?
Depends on the company and the position you apply for. And yes, know that there are plenty of people working for a company who just blatantly cheated. In the end the company doesn't care, that's why they see how you're doing in junior positions. It's a different story when you apply for higher positions.

Now, until you've reached such a higher position, know that they didn't respected you as much when you began in the first place. They all cheat, every damn last one of them, and those that didn't fool themselves into thinking they're better, because in the eyes of the company you're not.

I'm majoring in CS and minoring in History and Math. Planning to graduate in May 2017.

I was wondering how fucked a student is if they have no work experience while they're in college. Will a good GPA and Professor recommendation mend that gap?

Also, what about personal projects? I know people are always saying you should "write" as much as possible.

If your college produces a lot of spin-off companies and you want to get a job there, a Prof. recommendation can be great because the founders of the company probably know the guy (I still talk with the people at uni). To me, personal projects are nice because I can look at the quality of your code, and in an interview I would ask you about design decisions you made to get an idea into your reasoning. If someone only has professional experience, they can't discuss anything they actually did in depth, which means I have a lot less to work with and have to resort to bullshit interview questions.

If you've got the time, I would recommend doing a personal project with a group or contributing significantly to an existing open source project: if you've only programmed by yourself, an employer has no idea how you'd fit into a group and if you can work with existing codebases.

No, you were criticising pursuing a doctoral. I'm pursuing a master's degree, not a PhD, and I merely pointed out a master's degree is a good reason to pursue if you want (among other things) to go for your PhD later.

There's no denying a master's degree is a good stepping stone (if not a requirement) to follow a doctoral programme, but you misinterpreted this as being *my* goal.

I hope this clarified it a bit, friend.

They disable the help switch so you don't have that for reference.
>>
To the fags that are asking how hard a+/net/sec+ are...
These are BASIC it certs. Are you a networking god? Then net+ might be easy, do you have no idea that there's more than cat5 cable? Might not be for you. A+ is probably the only cert IMHO that will help in any career field regardless of how much of a pleb you are. Basic/caveman understanding of all IT. None of it will matter in the real world because its all null. Can you actually perform the job? If you're just starting, start small and work your way up. A good company will prob pay for you to take the cert AND pay you more.
All this is my personal opinion... It might help you get in the door, but if you need a brain dump to pass any of these tests, gtfo and let someone who knows their shit get that job, and you can intern for geeksquad to get your pampers wet.

Depends on how bad you want it.
Army put me through Net+ and Sec+ as part of my job training. We were given 7 days of instruction for Sec+, 9 days for Net+. I passed both on my first go around, but maybe 40% of the students fail the cert (though most pass the army good-enough test to move on in the course, they just don't get CompTIA certification).

However, I would not recommend doing it this way. I'm certified but I only have a vague recollection of anything I learned - I can pick up the topics quick with a two minute skim of the relevant text, but if I don't have the books on-hand I'm going to have trouble expressing concepts.

Get a subscription to pluralsight.

Watch all the videos on windows 7, windows 10, server 2012 and server 2012 r2.

Also watch the videos about linux, preferably LPIC/linux+

Make a home lab if you can, I started off with an athlon x2 5600+ system w/ 4GB ddr2 (with proxmox) for the linux vms.

This will provide you the familiarity one needs for working in an enterprise computing environment.

Watch the network+ videos so you have at least a basic understanding of networking.

Don't have to do certs, apply to an IT contracting firm for their tier 1 stuff, they expect little to no experience.

Most people need to put in the time at help desk. I know a lot of hiring managers that will not hire a sys admin/net admin if they didn't spend any time on the helpdesk/desktop support.

The reasoning is you develop a really good triage method and exposure to a lot of different types of problems.

That being said, anyone who has 5 years or more just doing help desk/desktop support will not be considered for any jobs (even other desktop support jobs) because you are probably one of the no effort plebs that infect the field.

Let me elucidate on something - corporate doesn't have time to dick around and pinch pennies. There are three zones in the country - CA/San Jose/SF; NYC/NJ/CT/NE; and everything else. I don't know if pay is higher for CA/SJ/SF or the greater NYC area, but the lowest one is the 'everything else.' The pay difference is about 8-10% each step. A 'NYC Area' salary just means you work out of NY/NJ/CT/MA.

but please geniuses, continue to try to figure out why sales makes so much more than software engineers.

You can start sending resumes out right now to companies that contract out tech work.

Especially in places that are tech hubs (sf bay area, austin, seattle) there is a lot of demand for contract IT work. I've worked with a lot of people who had no experience that way. It's a good low risk way of testing out if someone is any good before you hire them.

>>52361021
If you have experience in programming and something to show for it, such as projects you've uploaded, it could bring you a long long way in terms of places to apply.
I would say try yourself within that first if you do, if you don't or do not want to be a programmer, get certified.
Even then, you have to make more choices as to what you would like to work with. For example, A+ is a generally ok start certification if you wanna do helpdesk, but beyond that it's almost worthless.

CCENT is basic dude. Really basic. I can't remember the exam off the top of my head, but should be super easy for most network joes with little experience. I know I was in and out of the exam room within 15min, read pretty much the entire "how to do this exam" text...

Using this thread because it’s the best one.

I finished a course at University which was a jack of all trades type degree and didn't really know what I wanted to do.

I got a job for a small software company doing a jack of all trades role. I'm currently managing a few databases (on Azure), setup a small network (with my limited information) and deal with clients mainly doing helpdesk. Using SQL Server mostly, but also dabble in C# (not much).

I've realized I like the whole data/information management and the network sides of IT.

I'm learning more about SQL and Networks currently but I’m wondering where to go from here? I’ve heard Python is useful to learn? I also think I will carry on with C# to a good level of knowledge.

I'm not massively interested in Web Dev but will learn what I must if it is required.

My questions are:

>Is this a good route to go down?
>What should I be learning on the side?
>Can you recommend any good books and sources so I can read and learn when I want (especially for networks and setups and related ideas)?
>>
>>52367771
if you enjoy, its the best route to go down.
Theres two choices when it comes to a career:

>Something that you enjoy and you wont mind doing for the next 30 years

>Something you dont want to do but may pay more but you only do it for 5 years before you either, kill yourself or change to the job you enjoy.
>>
>>52368134
Meeting somewhere in the middle is always the best option. Doing something you don't mind doing for better pay is always the right answer.

> first chapter has a graph where you add up your experience based on how often you have done a certain task, ie. used windows 7 alot? 2 hours haven't used it at all somehow? 8 hours

I mean I get it's just a suggestion, but I've had placement experience and went to college already. Has anyone spent nearly 2-3 months studying for these exams?

I failed badly on the troubleshooting part, especially when i had to resolve network problems and configuration

I'm kind of curious in that case what your school structure is like. Do you attend school until the 12th grade? To stay on topic though, he should probably grab a book for self-study and take as many tech-focused classes as possible throughout middle? and high school.

>>52370854

Oh, I didn't realize you were referencing your previous post. The book I used for my introduction to networking course was "Data Communications and Networks by Curt M. The rest was pretty much in-class work that I can't share.

Taking part 1 of my A+ exam this Friday. Little nervous but I've been studying the hell out of my material the last couple weeks and getting results of a solid 80+% on my practice exams. Part 2 I need to study a bit more on but I planned for that.

The real trouble for me is the only work experience I have is a few months of an internship and tonnes of customer service experience from past unrelated jobs. But I have personal experience with computers going all the way back to the mid-90's (ie: I started with DOS and went through most of the iterations of Windows as they came out).

A bit of general Resume advice I got from a family member in management is load up your cover letter with keywords from the job posting, since basically every resume is run through a search filter before anyone sees them, these days.

It won't hurt your application. How much it help depends on the specific job, though.

Is this a F500 company?
>>
>>52385765
finical services, not F500.

However I'm under the mean for salary for my position, but there's a lot of perks.

If I was at a F500, I'd expect 1.5 - 2x salary.

Czechfag here, Polishfags have probably the same standard of living - it's pretty good. You can live on that really comfortably.

Schools tend to care about education, wouldntyaknow? Chances of working at a college without a degree are very, very low. I'm talking they'll take someone with a low level degree, unrelated field, with no work history over someone who's been doing it for twenty years but only has certs.

The people handing out degrees are just understandably biased as to their worth.

minimum wage (after tax and all that shit) is ~340 dolaroos. it's hard to survive for one person, but two people on minimum can get by quite okay (although without cool vacation/new electronics or whatever). my 1.5k is quite comfy, although I'd like to increase that so I can start investing some of that and whatnot.
>>
>>52385995
Fyi this is probably the worst time to start investing.
