2nd generation GCN is Sea Islands
3rd generation GCN is Volcanic Islands, but AMD dropped the Islands naming structure and is moving on to something else.

I can't speak for the HD series you've mentioned but at least they released something in response to competition even if it was only a little worse off than the competition for a reasonable sum of money less.

They're all the same cores. AMD dropped the old ATI core design because of the growing power gap between it and GCN. If you're a company like AMD where holding money is like a person holding water in their hands. You gotta make a few cuts. They don't wanna waste an entire team of software engineers on old legacy cards. This is like Nvidia dropping the 200, 9000, and 8000 series. Its not a good idea, nor is it kind to keep those cards relevant. It just wastes peoples electricity on old inefficient hardware that should be replaced anyway because of Housefire risks. Nvidia updating those cards is a publicity stunt for poorfag retards like OP, who idolise faceless megacorps because 'muh post-purchase rationalisation' and 'muh barren gayman wallet'.

Hd 7950 beats a gtx 960 in most games and the 7970 can get pretty close to a gtx 970, but never beat it. I'm pretty sure even with an overclock it won't be enough, but the 7970 is still an amazing card.

There is literally no such thing as GCN 1.X. AMD has never, ever used this naming scheme, it was invented by a writer for Anandtech because he was too lazy to look up the technical details of the Sea Islands line which is 2nd generation GCN.
