I just bought two of these things, both 256gb, one is going to be windows 10, the other is going to be lincucks.
so what should i do with it? im not putting on arch, or gentoo (been there done that, no)
i already use elementary on my laptop, like it alot more than i liked DSL and Gentoo.
>>
>>52342384
Literally Meme: The Product

I fell for it, no fps increase in games, boot time from 10 secs to 7 secs. Thanks /g/.
>>
>>52342384
how fucking retarded are you where buying 2 256gb ssds was deemed to be a good use of your money?

holy shit you are a tool
>>
>>52342384
>im not putting on arch
>been there done that, "no"
well you're shit out of luck, mate. that's pretty much the end game of linux. arch is just giving you as much choice as possible without making things too hard, and gentoo is where you go when you're smart enough to maintain your own system without being handheld (elementary)
I've heard good things about ubuntu, but I wouldn't recommend it. I've also heard it spies on you.
t. fairly ignorant arch user who doesnt really step outside of arch

>one is going to be windows 10
just fucking don't.

i dont play games, and its not supposed to increase your fps in games anyways?

also i have a 70 second boot on my win 7 machine, and a 0 second boot on my dead laptop(battery AND hdd) so this is needed.
>>
>>52342412
That's like $200 which isn't much if you have a job.
>>
>>52342432
ok, give me $200. no worries.
(yes, i have a job.
no, op isn't smart for wasting money like this. you don't need 512gb unless you're a dirty hoarding faggot.
no, i'm not the guy you replied to.)
>>
>>52342407
"SSDs are a meme" is a meme
>>
>>52342432
$200 is grossly overpaying. dont for a second try to pull the 'get a job' card because i will outplay you on it.

you shouldnt be spending anywhere over $120 on a 512gb evo 850. if you spend $200 and you arent getting 1TB of space, you are brain dead.

Rsn?
>>52342456
It's been a while since I bought an ssd, didn't realized prices had dropped so much
>>
>>52342412
i have two computers that need new boot drives.
i would like to boot several operating systems from each of them, so i need room, vista alone is like 70 gb.

>>52342415
i appreciate the attempt at advice, i really do, but you dont know enough to know that arch is the end all be all m80. that's debian.

>>52342456
i paid $150 for them each out the door. if i over paid $60 on them, that sucks, the kid who helped me find it, the guy who rang it up, and the dude who's gonna restock it all still have their jobs though.

and i realize how retarded it is to boycott e-shopping, but at this point, where i live, i need to.
>>
>>52342473
if you bought 2 because you have 2 machines, then okay that is acceptable. if you paid $150 EACH then holy fucking shit there isnt really much to say about that.

but since it seems like you are putting vista on one of them, probably because of MUH BOTNET, then you really are a tool and are a complete fucking retard.

do whatever you want, but god damn you are dumb for trying to fit in here

i paid that out the door, in fremont (san francisco/oakland) so its a pretty good price, only like $5 more than i would have paid to newegg after shipping and all that, plus i didnt have to wait, that alone is worth the money.
i'm putting vista on it because i like vista, is a crime? people told me the same thing about
millenium edition, oh well. it worrks.

i have been on this site longer than you have been breathing assface.

>>52342501
debian runs on everything.
gentoo barely runs on anything.
arch is meme.
>>
>>52342501
How am I going to give you $200 if I don't know your rsn?
>>
>>52342547
HAHAHA THIS HORRIBLE ANALYSIS OF LINUX DISTROS
in reality, it's really the opposite
linux will run on anything given configuration
out of the box however, i've found that both gentoo and arch are more compatible with a wider range of hardware. thanks to debians "free software" ideaology, most wireless cards don't even fucking work without using a seperate device to install wireless drivers.
>>
>>52342566
Not really sure what an rsn is, so that's a good question.
Apparently it's a digital horce race betting platform?
>>
>>52342575
>he doesn't have an rsn
Alrighty you got me. I fell for your bait. Nice meme pal
>>
>>52342567
gentoo doesnt even support arm fully and you say it has less than debian?

how can you claim to support more products when you have more networking options and i have more instruction set options???

luckily im using an x86__AMD64 INTEL brand CPU chip. so i am SAFE

"i was only pretending!" to justify buying FIVE HUNDRED GIGABYTES of storage
>>
>>52342641
OP here. how is buying 500gb a waste? i have programs that are 300gb alone. the whole suite is almost 2 tb. it comes on its own hard drive m80
>>
>>52342641
Not at all, rsn is an acronym for runescape name because all my money is in gp
>>
>>52342671

it's not a waste.

stop listening to /g/

these people actually hate ssd's.

the same logic stands, ssd for boot and main programs and gayms.

spinners for your furry porn and bullshit.
>>
>>52342671

>>52342672
oh,
TripleKMafia
>>
>>52342690
>programs and gaymes
what types of programs? obviously i dont want to install all 2 tb of my music suite on there, but would the executables benefit from being there? they still have to load samples (if any) from the mech drive?
>>
How fast do you guys thing a 240GB SSD for OS/programs and a 1TB HDD would fill up?

I can fill 500GB easy but thats it, i would be using most stuff on the HDD and leave the SSD for OS and programs i use frequently.
>>
>>52342713

i have no fucking clue how you could have two TB of music programs. period.

you might have 2TB of music related to those programs, but there's no way the actual programs are that big.
>>
>>52342698
music was the right guess, but usually the big shit is video editing, with photo coming in second.

you can only have so many samples of the same thing to manipulate, but with video, you make these huge overlays that take 5-10gb alone.
>>
>>52342742
>thing
think

Also what problems you can notice when using a damaged/defective SSD for OS?

With an HDD you can notice problems like the computer freezing or long loading times.
on a really fucked up one even crash or damage the OS alone.
>>
>>52342742

here's my spread:

120GB SSD - OS and skyrim and STALKER. it's damn near full and I never should have come here.

240GB ssd - comfy place for witcher 3 and a bunch of other games, potatoshop and any new installed programs

480gb ssd - mostly empty

2tb drive and 1tb drive - 4chan pics from 2006 and shit and games i rarely play.

i just got a samsung evo 850 best fucking 80 dollars ever, holy shit everything is pretty fucking fast
>>

7.5 GB is small as fuck, can plebs like you please quit whining about SSD size and space?

where were you when we were making music just fucking fine ten years ago?

bitch nigga
>>
>>52342854
making music with lesser programs that yielded lesser results. and if your music was just fucking fine how come NI made all these instruments?

and 7.5 gigs for a single violin emulator is alot.
>>
>>52342874

>thinking electronically generated music has actually gotten better in the last decade

it hasn't.
>>
>>52342890
lets go ahead and use myself as an example.
ive been producing electronically for well over 10 years, almost 20.
the music i can create with just a PC, is lightyears ahead of what i could make with just a PC then.

you're right though, electronically generated music hasnt gotten much better, just the tools we use to create it has.

i can use 30 different reverbs with my one pc in real time. ten years ago that would have to be rendered 2 or 3 tracks at a time, depending on what used that reverb. or you needed exxternal hard ware.

you're a shitter if you dont recognize the benefit to that
>>
>>52342407
Why would an SSD increase fps?
>>
>>52342384
should I replace my 2010 vertex 2 with a bx100/samsung 850 evo?

Is it even worth it? Do any programs take advantage of the increased speed?
>>
>>52342950

i'm not even knocking you though bro, you might be the next fucking ferry corsten for all i know.

>inb4 trance hater

but back to ssd size and space considerations, i just bought a 480 GB drive for $110 over the holidays. mushkin just announced plans to drop a sub 500 dollar 4TB drive, and the 2TB drive will be at a good price point as well.

now i haven't done a ramdisk personally but maybe that could be something that works out for you. you know where you have plenty of ram and install shit to ram as if it were a hard disk, but it's gone once you cut the power to it.

yeah, im not interested in volatile ramdisk, thank you for the suggestion though. i love trance, everything about it (not the new trouse EDM stuff tho, fuck that)
personally i am on a psytrance kick right now, almost 40 years old and im making acid tunes. lol
>>
>>52343074

see you and me are more on the same page than you thought.

i have a soft spot for melodic house but i don't kid myself. i really miss the good high NRG trance that used to be popular.

i want to like goa psy trance but i'm just too chill of a guy to really take hold of it. listening to some right now but it's just not my main gig. maybe if i did some cocaine or adderall.......

So, when do you guys think the next price drop will happen?
We will ever see 120GB SSD for $10?
