Building something primarily for music production and a bit of gaymen. I have a spare 500GB hard drive at home so no need to purchase one yet. Just had a few concerns.

1) How important is an aftermarket CPU cooler if I have no real plans to OC?.

2) Is it still worth buying an 1150 system or should I splash out about 250$+ extra to get a bleeding edge 1151 rig?

3) what would be a good GPU for around 250$ or less?
>>
1. Don't waste money, stock cooler is all you'll need unless you're doing intensive shit all day
2.stay with what you have
3.gigabyte gtx 960 is gr8 for 1080p
Also, get a better powersupply, you don't need near 600w. Get a 80+gold at 450w at most
>>
What's your budget retard? What music production software do you use?

Ram could be cheaper, PSU is absolute crap and should be replaced, GPU should be either 960 or 380, b85 is a meme and an i7 could actually be useful, consider a vishera CPU too since moar cores may come in handy.

You don't need an aftermarket cooler unless you find the stock one too noisy.
>>
UPDATE...

>>52340131
Around 975$CAD would be ideal cause after the 13% sales tax and recycling fees that is about 1100$ even.

I run FLS and sometimes Abelton with a bunch of VSTis for some projects.

Ram was the cheapest 2*8GB kit that my local retailer has in stock.

>>52339999
Nice quads. I kind of want to have a larger PSU incase it ever needs to be re purposed in the future. I dont really game for 9 hours a day so I am not saving a whole shitload on my electric bill.
>>
>>52340289

It's alright, but wow, $979 for that.

They really rip u off in canada. You could build the same thing for sub-$700 at microcenter easily.
>>
>>52340289

PSU uses as much power as you take from it. Get a better one, tr2 ate known to come with subpar parts and a subsequent high rate of failure.

You should seriously consider am3 cpus if you want to save up. They perform well on multi threaded tasks such as audio processing.
>>
>>52340289
Why that much RAM anon? You might want a hard drive to supplement all that, if you're going to stick with that PSU might as well go with a cheaper r9 380(x) (they both sit 180-225). Case is on the expensive side as well; although you may care a lot about aesthetics its not worth it for the size of a mATX case. Then you might be able to squeeze in a HDD as well. 4460 cannot be overclocked without firmware tweaks so don't bother with aftermarket coolers. It's fine for gaming and processing rather small data streams e.g. audio, but may have trouble with video encode.

>>52340353
>Get a better one

but he did. Did you not see his list?

It's bronze-rated and made by decent Japanese capacitors. Let's move on before we get too snobbish.
>>
>>52340367
its cheaper to buy a decent amount of RAM while its current vs purchasing upgrades down the road.

i like the case because its got 4 hdd bays and they are the ones that pull out towards the opening.

This is what I'm getting with my taxes
>>
>>52341269
the case is the weakest link. not really big on inwin stuff.
>>
>>52341336
It had good reviews and I'm looking for something white, though it's not a deal breaker really.

Do you know of any good ones off the top of your head?
>>
>>52340744
I ask because does ableton actually consume more than 8GB? Although I do understand because the system in itself doesn't scale up very well (non-overclockable processor, etc.)

The NZXT Source 210 offers 8 3.5" bays although they don't hot swap bays nor the ones that just slide out, but for 40 bucks cheaper I wouldn't mind.

Also are these the required vendors you have to buy from? Can you buy from, say newegg? Do they tax you to shit or something?

Hey OP. Just built a PC for music production/gaming around 3 weeks ago. I went with this
>>
>>52341404
abelton and FLS start out pretty light but once you start adding shit it can get up there.

i just buy shit from Canada Computers as they are close to home and pretty good about pricing.

>>52341352
Bitfenix Neos, NZXT Source, NZXT Phantom. They are all cheaper and from more reputable companies.
>>
>>52341534
thanks I'll check them out
>>
>>52341430
what is with that storage scheme? are you using one SSD for VSTis? and why 3 hdd?

>>52341404
For reference this is what you can get in the states for about the same price range, not including legal software. Also, I usually don't buy Samsung SSDs due to firmware TRIM controllers in linux not supporting it.
>>
>>52341610
1 SSD for Windows and the Samsung SSD for OS X to use Logic Pro X. The HDD's were $40 each, so I just snatched up 3 which is the max for my case
>>
>>52341610
I've used 1 of my HDD's for games. No idea what to do with the other ones yet. The 500GB SSD is treating me pretty well
>>
>>52341787
so its primarily a hackintosh with a second SSD for windows and steam?
>>
I'm not exactly building anything right now, but I've been using Logical Increments as a reference, and put together a list of stuff to build a PC for gaming.
Is the 8GB R9 390X too much? Like... is the amount of memory just a bit on the ridiculous side of things or what?
I keep forgetting that /g/ doesn't use spoiler tags. Just goes to show how much of a newfag I still am.

>>52341817
Yep. Running smoothly on El Capitan. DDR4 shows up as DDR3 for some reason. Might have to change my System Definition
>>
>>52341980
would build that if i had more money. my only real complaint is with the wifi. why not pay 25$ more and get some power line adapters which have more practical throughput?
>>
>>52342408
Well, Wifi's what I'm used to, I guess.
>>
>>52341430
>170 dollars for a motherboard
>750W PSU
Those are some pretty big WHYs
>>
>>52342926
5 storage devices, optical drive, powerful GPU. im not that guy but i would rather get a higher capacity PSU just because they dont go obsolete that quick so a solid one can last you many years.
>>
>>52340349
try australia
>>
>>52341430
I sincerely doubt you need that many terabytes of storage. Or, You at least don't need that many 1 TB HDs when you could get at least one 2 TB HD.
>>
>>52342926
Well..... it is a X99 build. It's one of the cheapest motherboards for x99. I actually paid $150 if you add the $20 rebate. 750W because it's what I feel safe with for some reason.

>>52342988
No optical drive and the EVGA 750G2 is a tier one PSU according to Tomshardware. Superflower manufactured it, so it's not a waste.
>>
>>52345122
Right now I use 1 for games on Windows and another one on OS X. No idea what to do with the 3rd one though. Also, got them for $40 each so it was a good deal.
>>
>>52345280
if you are doing audio then a project and sample drive may be in order.
>>
>>52345456
Thanks man! I'm definitly going to do that. Would you put drum kits on the sample drive too? I have them on my SSD right now.
>>

Better CPU and GPU, and also a much better PSU for only a few extra bucks. You could drop the PSU down to an EVGA 500B and come in exactly where you wanted to, but I wouldn't recommend it.

The PSU is an i7 with no iGPU. The GPU is superior to the GTX 960 while costing less. From a performance standpoint, all upside.
