How do you backup your data /g/?

What's your personal backup strategy?
Why do you think it's best?

You do backup your data, don't you /g/?

No one on /g/ backs up their data?

I use the laptop method

that shirt should say
"RMS is my /home/boy"

Amazon Cloud Drive + acd_cli + Duplicati
Pretty neat combo. Encrypted, off-site cloud backup with unlimited* storage.
I'm also planning to make snapshot backups to Blu-ray disks, but it is a little bit of a hassle.
>>
>implying i have any data worth backing up

I keep some choice memes on an external drive but they grow stale fast so I'm not sure why I bother
>>
>>52339864
on my 2012r2 server i use WSB to backup everytin to a USB disk that I swap out monthly. Occasionally I will push files up to my amazon drive because of its unlimited data hoarding.

on my gaming machine, I use windows backup to a RAID1 set of internal disks. I don't keep anything there that cant be re downloaded if it blew up

No tricky third party shit here

That's about it

>Very important personal data
Encrypted microSD card, hidden outside the house
(dm-crypt + rsync)

>Important and personal data:
External 2.5" HDD / 2 TB
Encrypted incremental, with duplicity
Drive kept outside the house

>Music / Films
Partially rsync'd to another internal drive. Don't care that much.

If this is your only backup of "Very important" you are stupid

my books, movies/tv, manuals, wallpapers/porn, music, keepass file and calander backup are on this 500G toshiba I got awhile ago. Can't trust physical storage though so I also backed everything up on google drive. No arguing with free 15G. It's not the best backup strat that's forsure.
>>
>>52340999
Obviously it's also included on the 2 TB drive

... and duplicated on laptop + desktop
>>
>>52341024
nah it wasn't obvious but thanks for clearing it up for me, now i will sleep well tonight
>>
>>52339864
spend $2 on google drive each month and put the entire hard drive in the desktop client. even if i accidentally delete the whole thing i can restore it from trash.

i have an ssd so it's actually viable
>>
>>52339864
Scheduled Macrium backups of all machines here to an external drive hanging off my server, with offsite backups.

> have two identical external drives.
> one here, one with my brother.
> every 6 months, hand the drive that's here to my brother, get the other drive back
> continue backups to returned HDD
> swap in 6 months, rinse repeat

Jobs done.

My friend uses Mega as backup. He doesn't have much data so the 50GB is enough for him, and syncs everything to Mega. Do you think it's a good strategy? Given the fact that Kim Dotcom and some of his co-workers probably will be expelled to the US? Is it possible that the service will be shut down?

What's up with all the people backing their data up to other people's computers?

Why do you trust the cloud?
>>
>>52339864
a lot of flash drives + veracrypt
>>
>>52341109

okay i'll trust it so long as it's on phy storage that's in the care of someone whos family depends on the integrity of my data.
>>
>>52341148
This, I'm genuinely fucking surprised that a board full of people that encrypt everything are so willing to just give their shit to a third party where they have zero control over the box, it's security, or the storage therein.

It's like /g/ is full of 15 year olds who have no fucking clue about data integrity.. That can't be right, can it..?
>>

Stuff I backup
>homework (usb, dropbox, second hdd)
>picture files (second hdd)
>anything i made (second hdd and dropbox)
>music (second hdd)

Stuff I dont bother with
>installers for popular software
>movies/tvshows/anime (i have a txt file on my dropbox with a list of all the titles so i know what i lost if shit hits the fan)

What?

Things like music and movies just gets backed up to an external hdd.

Personal stuff that can't be replaced gets backed up to an external hdd, another internal hdd, and periodically to BDRs.
>>
>>52341148
I don't trust them, therefore I encrypt. Both local and cloud backup has their advantages and disadvantages. If I were a company or a welthy person I definitely wouldn't give my data away even in encrypted form, and would set up a multi-site, redundant, trusted backup and archive environment. But it is a very expansive thing to do. Leaving the job of bare metal storage to experts of big companies seems to be a good alternative, as long as you encrypt.
On the other hand these companies CAN go down in a blink with your data, so I wouldn't trust them alone without some sort of local backup.
It also happened once that Google lost a tiny bit of data of some users. Yes, this actually happened.

Data security is part of data integrity you git.

I am wondering how cheaply could big companies like Amazon and Google buy their hard drives. I mean Amazon gives away 100TB for the price of a 2TB drive for a year. Of course most of the users won't upload that much data, in fact much less, but there will be numerous users who do upload tens of TBs of data for much less than they would pay for a physical drive. So how much do they buy? We pay like ~$40 for a 1TB drive. How much they do?

>>52339864
I have a 2TB USB3 external HDD. It mainly has my anime/movies on, but I also use it as my main backup storage. I feel because it's not constantly connected to the PC, and only attached when needed, I seriously improve the lifetime of it.
