Is a 13 inch screen big enough for general use? Lately, I haven't seen as many 15 inch laptops in the wild as I used to.
>>
>>52335121
I think 15in is hitting the wayside because people are preferring portability over screen sizes, not to mention the guts in smaller laptops have improved drastically over the last 10 years, hell, even 5.

Affordability, portability, and power in 13 in laptops or smaller.

Thank god that "netbook" shit is gone. Those were awful.
>>
>>52335121
11-15 is the reasonable range for laptops and 13 is an ideal. this varies when you break from 16:9 ratios though
>>
>>52335228
90% of the reason I'm hesitant to try out a 13 inch model is the absolutely awful experience I had with an HP netbook in 2011 or so.
>>
I have a 13inch macbook and 12inch X220.
They are both perfect for me, because I have a desktop.
I think anything above 13 maybe 15 (at a push) is getting into the realm of desktop replacement.
>>
>>52335228
>i am cheap and this is how i justify it
>>
>>52335121
yeah. only time it sucks is with gaming, but I rarely do that with my laptop to begin with.
>>
>>52335273
You'll pay more for a 13 inch ultraportable than you would for a generic 15 inch.
>>
>>52335121
I have a 13" XPS, it's a wonderful machine.
>>
>>52335273

>cheap

Have you seen the prices of 11-13in Macbook/Macbook Airs?

Anything but fucking cheap.
>>
>>52335298
I have a desktop for that, so no worries there. This is strictly for Laptop Things.

Alright, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the advice, /g/.
>>
>>52335263

Erase Netbooks from your memory entirely.

11-13in models are a whole different ballgame now, but believe me, I can understand the hesitation after those shitty netbooks hit the market for "ultra portable" solutions.
>>
>>52335228
Netbooks now live on as cheap under $200 chromebooks and windows laptops.

Anything above 11" was made for stupid people that can't into computer.

Prove me wrong.

>Protip: U can't
>>
>>52335391
Even Chromebooks are better than netbooks, thanks to a lean OS, descent screens and reasonable specs.

Though personally I find 13" the perfect size, the surface pro is very tempting
>>
>>52335391

My experience with Chromebooks have been much better than netbooks in the past.

But I agree, 200 dollar chromebooks and windows laptops are just basically the evolved version of netbooks, with slightly better functionality.
>>
I can only add that some shitty websites break @ 11". Also not so good for productivity. I'd say 13/15 is the sweetspot.
>>
>>52335473

I would probably say 13 is a nice sweet spot, but for shit like chromebooks, 11 is more than enough for the purpose that they serve.

I mean who the fuck seriously wants to watch a 4k video on a chromebook? Have to be fucking retarded if someone wants to use a chromebook for multimedia purposes like that outside of youtube/basic net videos.
>>
>>52335448

I laugh every tiem.

17 inch or go home
>>
>>52335456
It's nice now that you don't have to choose between either long battery life and unbearably slow performace or fast performance and low battery life. I think the baytrail/cherrytrail atoms in chromebook are fine if you understand you're not going to be doing "intense" things with it.

>>52335458
Anyone remember those $99 netbooks at CVS? It's amazing how fast that Acer chromebook that was on sale for $99 on black Friday is compared to it.
>>
>>52335625

I remember those $99 netbooks. I knew a few people who got them and they all took a shit within a year. Fucking terrible.

Acer Chromebooks/Chromebooks in general have come a long way since that bullshit.
>>
12.5-13" is pretty good for daily use
>>
>>52335684
Nice meme Mr Shill. How about some bigger batterys instead? Asus is way ahead in the battery/powerdrain ratio. So the effective runtimes of acers are always shit. How long does yours last max.?
>>
>>52335684
If they actually happily live with one for a year, $99 is a good investment.

I paid £1200 ($1700) on my Macbook Pro, which will probably last 5/6 years.

Assuming 6 years that's $283 a year. I actually understand the use of shit hardware for people who can't afford it. As long as it's replaced when it's "done"
>>
>>52335741

Nice meme? what the fuck are you even talking about?

I don't have an Acer...I don't even know where you got that, I was just speaking about Chromebooks in general.

The only ones I've used so far is the Asus and the Samsung Chromebook 2.

The Asus actually has a decent battery life, I've been getting 9-10 hours of mixed usage, youtube videos, web browsing, etc. with about medium brightness or lower.

The samsung 2 I think has a better screen and it feels better built, but the battery isn't as good. Otherwise its pretty identical as far as functionality besides of a few different design choices.

13.3" rMBP here
its a pretty good size for general use
>>
>>52335121
I use a 13.3" MBA as my daily driver. Before that I mainly used 14.1" 4:3 ThinkPads for a lot of years. I actually found the 14.1" 4:3 form factor to be ideal, but the 13.3" is as good as it gets for 16:10 because it's basically the same width while sacrificing a little height. Anything smaller would either mean I would feel cramped for display area or text/elements would be too small for me to see comfortably.

I had a 15.4" MBP for a while and found it to rather large and heavy for lap use, but the larger display was enjoyable.
>>
>>52335783

Yeah, if it works for you, thats all that matters. I've stayed away from expensive laptops for the time being and kinda just go with custom building PCs.

Maybe some day I'll make a large investment into a better functional laptop if I know i can get 5-6 years out of it.

The main thing keeping me from seriously considering a <15" laptop is screen resolution. Anything smaller than about 1680x1050 gives me flashbacks to when I was stuck with a 1024x768 monitor for years in middle/high school. The x220 would be a very attractive laptop if I could put a decent screen on it.
>>
>>52335741
>>52335804
Yeah my arm chromebook has amazing battery life too. I usually get around 11(?) hours out of it and can leave it closed for days and still have 50% battery life left.

Makes me have hope for arm based laptops and desktops becoming dominant for consumption type users one day. If Google released it's android google play market one day for chromebooks they would probably explod in popularity.
>>
>>52336006
Resolution really isn't something that bothers me at that size.
In my X220s case, its a 12 inch screen that I haven't got my nose to. On my lap, I am not close enough to see the pixels. So it no longer matters.

I bet you're one of those guys with a 4k phone.
>>
>>52336013
X205 here, I get real 10-13 hours battery runtime. 10 when playing, this thing is truly amazing. Slow, but it's a quadcore, weird Windows experience... It's quicker if you open all programs at once instead of waiting for each one to finish start loading. On the paper an old core2duo would be faster, but it's doesn't feel the same desu,

That was my thought too once I got hold of an arm chromebook. I know that they're testing the architecture to use Googleplay on chromebooks, and you can even use some Android APKs on a chromebook using Twerk and Archon.

It's kinda come in handy for shit like installing skype to use video chat and shit.

I only hope they officially release the kits necessary to run Googleplay properly.
