Debian is fine if the software you need is in the repo.
Unfortunately, getting the new version is considered "unstable" and you are on your own if you want a secure system.
Ubuntu has ppa's to fix this so Ubuntu LTS is a lot better for my server.

In what regard? Unlike rpm packages which have a packaging guidelines and utilize specfiles rendering them easy to inspect, understand, modify and rebuild, debs are pure fucking mess because everyone does what everyone wants.

Lmao literally the least secure Out of The Box distro you can get because developers assume you know what you're doing and you're capable of securing it yourself. By default debian only has BASIC security features.
Ubuntu is literally "hardened" debian. Redhat's "lab rat" distro as /g/ likes to describe it stomps both of them.
