I am talking about those who want freedom but have realized they are fighting a lost battle and embraced the botnet

I have but I still avoid all Google services and Chrome and I still don't have a Facebook account.

Then how have you given up? Did you install windows? In that case that would be like bathing in shit, but not actively rubbing shit on your body. (it helps nothing)

why would you give up when the movement for freedum in the internet age is still going strong?
Things might not be looking bright but it is way too early to give up.
>free SSD project underway
>advent of 3D printers will bring more power to people, the barrier of entry towards creation will no longer be limited to those with tons of capital
>free software continues to progress and with people like Stallman that don't compromise we continue to move forward
>free hardware in general will be easier to create, it's only a matter of time, hardware and the manufacturing processes keep getting cheaper daily meaning people can now have control of supply and producers like never before
>while the surface net and the legislation for it is not looking good there are many decentralized models and encryption is still in the hands of the common man. Encryption is the future

I don't think it's ideal to be a purist freetard because that means that you would not be able to participate in modern life (I need to use google services and windows for work etc.)
I do not use non freedom disrespecting services and software unless I have to though.

Snowdon showed that all is lost
>>
>>52333871
anyone with more than one braincell already assumed all he revealed was happening anyway.
All is not lost since there is a free market that can cater to freedum just like it caters to making tracking devices. It's up to the individual what hardware and software choices they will make. Free hardware will come simply because of the size of the market and the continuity in reduction of manufacturing costs.

Yeah I gave up Linux a few years back...life has improved honestly. Although I attest fluxbox is my favorite desktop environment ever Linux just isn't worth it.

I mean every little task requires me to use a fucking command line. Packages getting fucked up constantly. Installation of anything NOT in the software downloader is a nightmare...rpm deb tar pet is insane...

Seriously if Linux had an equivalent of the Microsoft software installation wizard the entire world would flock to it. But as it stands links x is fucking broken... Much like your packages and their dependencies are always fucking broken because heaven forbid you just download and install the entire fucking program like a sane person!

Sorry...even thinking about how terrible it was wasting years of my life on that mess makes my blood pressure rise.

Linux distros I've used included mint, Debian, Fedora, puppy (I liked puppy ALOT actually), Mandriva and Ubuntu.

>uch like your packages and their dependencies are always fucking broken because heaven forbid you just download and install the entire fucking program like a sane person!
It's not consumer/retard ready yet. Also, I have only had one package conflict in Debian all these years which is easily resolvable if you make any effort to understand the command structure and function of the package manager

Yes I have completely given into the software

ARM is developing technology to print circuits on plastic
>>
>>52334451

Isn't the problem with ARM that there is no single completely open processor to this date because ARM simply sells the base plans to vendors that then decide how to design and implement their own processors?

Its an illusion, or at best, due to expire very soon. The sad reality is is that most wont even see the movement's demise happen.

The 1984 ref above is apt.
>>
>>52334746
I'm just trying to be optimistic. Things are looking very bad indeed since serious change only happens when enough normals can acknowledge a problem. Most don't care what the fuck is happening on their hardware as long as they can use facebook and the latest version of their tracking device as a talking point with other pseudo intellectuals. The abstraction of computing has created an ignorance to anything that is happening and the education system doesn't even bother to teach anything besides how to use Microsoft Word. Those that can even begin to understand that there is a hand in every piece of digital property they own say they don't care often citing the modern boogey man and >muh security as justifications. Crypto is being attacked again and chances are we're going to go back to the issues of the 90's very soon.
Hardware can not be trusted, processors are being manufactured with rootkits.
Free Hardware and software is dismissed as something for hobbyists and CS majors.
The list goes on and on
>>
>>52334196
This, pretty much.

Linux isn't worth the inconvenience, and Google services are so damn convenient, I just let 'em do whatever with my information at this point.
>>
>>52334699
Yes, but that's a good thing, they want as many people as possible to buy licenses to print their cores, so they're less likely to withhold the technology once it's working.
Intel would cover it with patents and make it impossible for hobbyists to buy circuit printers.

I'm personally looking forward to printing RISC-V cores for my free homemade laptop.

>Yes, but that's a good thing, they want as many people as possible to buy licenses to print their cores, so they're less likely to withhold the technology once it's working.
Interesting. Makes sense. I'm still retarded with working on hardware at a low level but the moment it's viable I'll be doing the same.
Doing my first libreboot hardware flash soon

If I have to do that shit it means its a lost cause. Seriously I have a 50+ hour a week job a wife and kids. Time is a resource many of us do not have much of.

Look I'm not trying to be a dick here but this shit is easy with Windows, osx and Android/chrome. And it could be easy in Linux if say instead of over 500 distributions work was consolidated on fixing the real issues. But this is the inherent problem of open source: no direction, no cohesion and because of limited profits no real motivation to fix it.

I honestly really really want to use Linux. I want to love it and never go back...but open source vs closed source is in many ways like socialism vs capitalism, one is idealistic and on paper perfect where the other one comes off as self serving and immoral but ultimately produces mostly functional results.

If Android had been anything like Linux it would be reviled hated and ultimately considered a failure. And Google would have hemorraged money as a result of market punishment. With Linux there may be no major penalties for failure but its lack of commercial incentive means the rewards for success are also limited. Hence we just kinda stagnate endlessly.

Believe me I wish it was different.

FREE FREE FREE ITS ALL FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>52334959
I understand, but for me optimism is wasted when one does not have anything to look forward to, which is how I see things now.
I believe we are on the threshold of what might be described as a technological dark age. A tech dark age not because technology is gonna go backwards, but beacuse its use, its design, its implementation is going to hold us all back. Hold us back from advancing, containing us in a world where stupidity, crassness and the atomisation of civil society will be the norm.

We (well most of us) walk blindly towards this, oblivious.

>If I have to do that shit it means its a lost cause. Seriously I have a 50+ hour a week job a wife and kids
Everything you say is sad but true. People will drop things if they started using them for purely ideological purposes in the first place a lot of the time. Also, dependency resolution should not be an issue to the typical end user but unfortunately GNU/Linux is not (and probably will never be) at a stage that it is consumer ready in terms of ease of use and application user land.
They leave the packaging system the way it is because they assume those that are going through the trouble of running GNU/Linux are going to want to have as much options as they can with packages.

For someone that doesn't already have the knowledge of configuring a GNU/Linux system (that's a ton of knowledge honestly) it's a nightmare. Thus GNU/Linux remains in the hands of codemonkeys, admins, special snowflakes, communists, and data centers and corps that can afford to dabble with it for their purpose.
>>
>>52335193
See my post right above yours...socialism is not the answer. It hasn't worked in politics and it doesn't work in software. Freetards are basically Bernie Sanders supporters...idealistic and naïve.
>>
>>52335193
that's free as in freedum, not necessarily free as in free beer (gratis) :^)
>>
>>52335321
Then if its free and you release the source, yet charge people for it. IM going to take your free software, and undercut you, because thats how it works
>>
>>52335285
So true...for the higher end IT guys who need this stuff Linux works wonders... But then again there's ALOT of cash in that. Not so much for desktop.

Right now I'm praying for an Android with desktop features... One with all the Google spyware disabled. Maybe if we can get some actual money in this we can get some results. Ubuntu did wonders for awhile with decent financing.
>>
>>52335388
>actual money
no, it has to be free. no money. So donate your time for free so we can make free software
>>
>>52335303
>Freetards
>Bernie Sanders supporters

etc etc.

If we are going to have any hope of avoiding the seemingly inevitable, you lot are going to have to grow up. No shit.
>>
>>52335418
most of the time it's academia and codemonkeys waving their epeen around and one upping each other. That's just the development model for it...
>>
>>52335418
This attitude is why Linux sucks. Grow up.
>>
>>52335422
And what the hell are we avoiding... Lapsing into a socialist nightmare with shitty software and shittier government? What's the Linux equivalent of a breadline?

>Installation of anything NOT in the software downloader is a nightmare...rpm deb tar pet is insane...
You just need to learn the process. Granted it isn't for everyone, but installing packages that aren't in repos is generally just a few basic commands, it just requires you to actually get your head around what those commands are doing. For me on arch, I find it just as effecient as clicking an exe file

>git clone url or download/tar -xvf
>makepkg -sri (builds deps, remove uneeded deps afterwards, install straight away)

or non AUR

>git clone url
>cat readme, check to see if any deps I have aren't installed or there are flags I should worry about
>90% of cases it's "./compile" or "./autogen", make and sudo make install

>>
>>52339607
not to circlejerk but this
Normals don't give a single fuck about having any installation options or seeing the source code for anything.

If there isn't a large install button flashing and screaming at you then the software is not retard proof and therefore not ready for the typical consumer
>>
>>52332643
Actually no. I installed Linux Mint over 3 years ago and just stuck with it until I learned enough basics to get by. I haven't opened Windows as a regular driver for over two years (or indeed at all for over 6 months).

While I have no control of the network beyond my own physical resources, I take efforts at least to try keeping my data out of the hands of unwelcome 'guests' who would siphon it from me.

At least take these basic steps anon.
>Private Browsing
>HTTPS Everywhere
>At least one of; Noscript|UBO|UMatrix|ABP...
>Peerblock
>STOP USING GOOGLE!

At least make a token effort anon. You owe you'reself (and us) that much heh.

Elon Musk is an example of American Dream Idealist so it's no surprise he is supporting open source. He only got here by luck. Don't use a single example for the success of open source.
