All is not lost since there is a free market that can cater to freedum just like it caters to making tracking devices. It's up to the individual what hardware and software choices they will make. Look I'm not trying to be a dick here but this shit is easy with Windows, osx and Android/chrome. And it could be easy in Linux if say instead of over 500 distributions work was consolidated on fixing the real issues. But this is the inherent problem of open source: no direction, no cohesion and because of limited profits no real motivation to fix it.
I honestly really really want to use Linux. I want to love it and never go back...but open source vs closed source is in many ways like socialism vs capitalism, one is idealistic and on paper perfect where the other one comes off as self serving and immoral but ultimately produces mostly functional results.
If Android had been anything like Linux it would be reviled hated and ultimately considered a failure. And Google would have hemorraged money as a result of market punishment. With Linux there may be no major penalties for failure but its lack of commercial incentive means the rewards for success are also limited. Hence we just kinda stagnate endlessly.

Everything you say is sad but true. People will drop things if they started using them for purely ideological purposes in the first place a lot of the time. Also, dependency resolution should not be an issue to the typical end user but unfortunately GNU/Linux is not (and probably will never be) at a stage that it is consumer ready in terms of ease of use and application user land.
They leave the packaging system the way it is because they assume those that are going through the trouble of running GNU/Linux are going to want to have as much options as they can with packages.
For someone that doesn't already have the knowledge of configuring a GNU/Linux system (that's a ton of knowledge honestly) it's a nightmare. Thus GNU/Linux remains in the hands of codemonkeys, admins, special snowflakes, communists, and data centers and corps that can afford to dabble with it for their purpose.

You just need to learn the process. Granted it isn't for everyone, but installing packages that aren't in repos is generally just a few basic commands, it just requires you to actually get your head around what those commands are doing. For me on arch, I find it just as effecient as clicking an exe file

Actually no. I installed Linux Mint over 3 years ago and just stuck with it until I learned enough basics to get by. I haven't opened Windows as a regular driver for over two years (or indeed at all for over 6 months).
While I have no control of the network beyond my own physical resources, I take efforts at least to try keeping my data out of the hands of unwelcome 'guests' who would siphon it from me.
