Cool concept desu, but I really have to wonder if this makes sense given a full blown Windows 10 machine is probably only $25-50 more. It seems like it has some minor compatibility issues with apps as well.

The Surface clone they have listed on their website does look very interesting though, and I'd love to see the progress with that. For the right price it could be a very interesting option.

Especially if Microsoft can get their shit together with the Windows Store, this thing will probably have trouble finding wide spread success, but a cool project either way
>>

Itself is not impressive, but sweet God is this a perfect match for the trackpad keyboard. Just add the left and right click button and bam, Priv's keyboard makes sense rather than being redundant (swype works as or faster than it, niggas).

>Especially if Microsoft can get their shit together with the Windows Store
They won't. Metro-style apps are such crap on the desktop, that it makes no sense to use those in favor of "traditional" software. And at the same time, there's no reason for developers to put their software on the Store when users already know to go to their websites and download it.

I like the idea of Remix OS for tablets, where Android can be a bit annoying to use.
>>

Well, at least from how they are describing it, actual computers that currently use Linux or Windows, which is completely retarded. This thing should run great in 2-3 gb of ram, and should allow for quite a lot of extra features in what previously was a email and word document machines. Hell, I can imagine a touch enabled Lenovo 100s with a better camera for 300 dollars working great with this thing.

So why would I use this rather than just using Linux? The Android "app ecosystem" is inferior to the Linux one, particularly if you use Wine to run Windows programs. Every Linux distro I know of has ten times the versatility and power of this.

This is the wrong approach. Rather than dumbing down PCs by running Android on them, we should be fixing our phones and tablets so we can use them for real work.

I'm tempted to try it just to see how poorly it runs when compared to a lightweight Linux distro so I can shit on Android more than I already do (my comparisons so far have just been with virtual machines limited to a single core and half the processor cycles to get to something that benchmarks close to phones and the lightweight Linux distros win every time).

>>
>>52328457
Ok Google IO devs. Look. You've been shitposting this over and over to get our reactions from a tough market.
It is android. It isn't windows, and you openly take statistics from people's phones regardless of what settings they use by circumnavigating legal terminology to get the same results via opened apps.
OS-X is like using a phone in quite a few manners and I already fucking hate it, no offense apple shills here on /g/, but this phone to desktop-feeling OS thing has to stop. It kills productivity and forces a machine to constantly have to update- which is good for devs because they get spying statistics and bad for me because my bandwidth with comcuck already sucks and gets capped. On top of that-fuck your stats.

The good:

-Works OOTB
-Easy to learn GUI
-keyboard shortcuts work (ctrl + c and whatnot)

The bad:
-just like I thought: multitasking SUCKS. It's the same as android. sure you can have many windows open but they run the risk to be closed automatically if you ignore them for too long. Just what the fuck? that's unacceptable on a desktop OS. DEALBREAKER.

Anyway I recommend you guys try it. Just don't expect it to be a final everyday use desktop OS. it's not there yet, and considering it's android based it might never get there.

It's always better to run a 64 bit CPU with a 64 bit compiled system.
The performance and memory management improvements alone are worth it.

How does that compare to an athlon 2000+ with 1gb ram?

I'm talking about really shitty.

I'm not one to accuse every thread mentioning a product as a "shill thread", but these RemixOS threads are pretty blatant.

OP, please just buy an ad on 4chan. It's a self-serve system, easy to do, and everyone site-wide can see them. Rest assured, your advertisement will go into the rotation fairly and you'll get the exposure your company needs.

I had a laptop with an athlon ql-60 dual core.
Newest atom chip I own is this:
http://ark.intel.com/products/70105/Intel-Atom-Processor-Z2760-1M-Cache-1_80-GHz

athlon was faster.
Also did work on a single core athlon last weekend, still faster.

I've got a laptop with an athlon xp 2000+

Looking to overclock it, I upgraded ram to 1gb.

If you think on the bright side, android is a linux-based os and it supports a lot of games, usually people complain that linux can't run games and stuff ike that, with an android desktop port like this there's a chance to get more people into the linux area. You just need root access to customize android to your heart content after all. Though, I didn't install this remix os yet so I couldn't test stuff for myself, I'm just speculating for now.

I doubt we can already customise android because a part of it is closed source (?). Thats why we have things like Xposed. + the root in android isn't completely similar to the root in linux.

Android is a stripped down, googlefied botnet linux kernel with a somewhat locked down google java stack dropped on top. Nothing more. In other words, you're comparing a Ford Focus to a high end Ferrari because they both have four wheels and you know nothing about cars.

shouldn't it support most of the Android apps out of the box? if not it makes no sense, that would mean devs have to re-release all thier apps to make them compatible with this OS... I hope it's not the case, I'm gonna trash it otherwise.

For a lot of reasons.
1. Android x86 was already popular
2. People have asked Google for this for years
3. Muh material design
4. It has a brighter future than most Linux distributions
5. Muh apps

Exactly the same thing happened when Elementary OS released a new version.

Just because android exist on x86 doesn't mean everyone will switch to it, everything exist in a proper pc fashion on windows already, and developers won't do anything until it reaches enough users, which will be never.

I don't see how this is bad. GNU forcing everyone into C hasn't been especially productive or good for security. Few programmers are even remotely intelligent enough to use C properly, let alone for nothing in return.

Someone explain how this is not a meme tier os to me. It's based off of Linux, of which there are many legitimate distros worth running on a PC, but also based off of Android which is designed exclusively for mobile. After basing their os on a mobile os, they are trying to make it work on a PC again?

Why the fuck didn't they just make their own Linux distro based off of something else? This just sounds counterproductive.

Widgets work, but you need to run a seperate app for them. It's kind of kludgy and stupid. Would be nice if you could place them right on your desktop but apparently not.

Why would people settle for 'quite a bit' when we can do whatever we want right now completely unrestricted with just about every linux desktop distro available?

Giving up 100% total control over your operating system to be able to run a few mobile apps. That's the one and only selling point? The shilling... it's real.
>>
>>52332037
This. I would actually think about using this if it came with a good terminal and the permissions of Linux. but it's basically Android for PC, and hence means it has all the flaws of Android.
