Is mini ITX good for servers? I'm building a home media / plex server, and I really fucking love how the Fractal Node looks. Plus, it has a lot of expansion bays for HDDs.

drop the "gotta be tiny" thing and get the ATX midtower of your choice. Even the real cheap ones are easier to work on, easier to cool (and cool quietly), and have several more drive bays than ITX.

what's the best OS for a home server to use? i've been thinking of NAS4Free; is that a good option? the (soon to be) server has 4 gigs of ram, and an athlon 64 x2 5200+.
Raspberry Pi 2 OC'd to modest level, latest openELEC, 1tb HDD.
I'm an absolute noob and I'm trying, with a certain degree of success, to set-up my memeberry media server plugged to my TV.
For now I managed to unify WiFi coverage in my house with a powerline adapter and PoA (raspberry is commected through ethernet), and I can enjoy my media on the TV or seamlessly play high bitrate Mongolian moving tapestry from the Rpi external hdd on any connected device.
Now I'm still trying to get kodi to correctly scrape and categorize my shit, apparently I can't make it detect a number of shows even if I change folder/file name manually. Maybe shit db.xml?
I've also been setting up rtorrent+rutorrent webui to automatically donwload stuff through RSS feed but it'll definitely take much more dicking around with regexp filters before I can say it's fully functional and organized.
Next step is getting Kodi to scan, scrape and categorize shows and movies automatically after download, but before that I'll need to figure out how to teach it to properly scan the stuff I already got on board.
The ultimate goal is to build, or at least learn how to build, a set and forget, always on, cute little shitbox that would automatically track, download and scan the stuff I want with the least possibile effort.
It's my first project and my bridge to /g/entlmanliness, I know the resources are limited and I may not succeed in every part of my project, but I hope to at least build a basis of knowledge on which to eventually build something better with better hardware.
Advices are welcome.

I'd use a full general-purpose distro, myself. Once you have the thing you might as well make it easy to use it for more than just being a NAS box. I usually go with Debian stable.

I don't want anything fancy, just a reliable big array of about 24TB with plex in it. Should I go with freenas and RAIDz2? I'm about to try it on a separate computer to see how it works.
I've gotten rid of my gaming pc for the time being and replaced it with a server running debian testing.
I have thrown things I had in hand in there, 4790 (non-k, I got it in an exchange lately), 28gb ram, two 3tb disks in raid1, one 2tb for movies and such, three ssd's for /root and virtual machines. I have two pci-e gpus in the machine, however I'm using the integrated for the host.
I have a few virtual machines running with kvm qemu, some with vga passthrough. I usually use Debian stable with minimal packages as a base distro, which I copy into use when I set up something for web dev or something. I have vms for webdev, torrents, general playing around and one windows 10 tech preview with a gpu passthrough, which I use only for gaming.
Yeah and one nuc-form factor machine for pfsense. Few raspberry pis, one pi 2, some old shit (ibm 3520? x7979, proliant g360 g4 iirc)

I recently got a synology ds415+ with 3x4tb wd red plus a new switch (zyxcel gs1900 24e) for link aggregation. I installed plex on it and this nas pretty much fits all my needs.
I got my esx hosts running on my local ssd´s (2 esx in a cluster + netapp ontab simulator) on my workstation, so I dont need a big dedicated homeserver anyways - if I run vm´s its just for testeing new updates or stuff like that or doin a virtual update scenario or so
