How do I convince my friend that SSDs aren't worth the money?

Let him spend his money however he wants, it's his money.

hey you hear that?
that's the sound of your spinning rust drives slowly dying

By lying, a lot.

Your friends can smell your fear.

But they are worth the money. Their price has fallen down a lot in recent years, they are much faster and are far more resistant to damage if you drop your laptop. They are worth it for the speed boost by itself, the OS is way more responsive.

This.
You should get a job, OP. Then you will know a joy of owning an SSD.
>>
>SSDs are not good for servers
>If you buy an SSD now, that same size SSD will cost half as much in 2 years

Literally the only two arguments I can think of.
>>
>>52300635
This.

Even when they do start slowing down, it'll still be a long fucking time before it's anywhere near as slow as a mechanical drive. By the time it's even a concern, it'll be time to build or buy a new computer anyway so it's a non issue unless you're an autistic neckbeard that clings to your hardware for 10+ years at a time.

Putting a disk in raid doesn't automatically kill it when just one of them goes bad, you fucking dumbass.
One broken disk in a three disk RAID 0 array means you get to replace one broken disk and lose all your data because your dumb ass striped it without mirroring it.
>>
>>52300688
>SSDs are not good for servers

Have two front-end storage servers at work desu.

Filled with PCIe SSDs, they front our massive file server cluster as a mirrored, highly-available cache.

Its amazing. Fucking disgusting speeds.

>raid 10 is stripping with mirror and requires AT LEAST 4 disk, 2 to strip across and 2 for the mirror

best argument I could think of is, once you buy a SSD you can never go back to the slow speeds, and noisy operation of HDD ever again., so you're gonna have to spend a bit more cash to never use a horrible HDD ever again.
>>
If he's on a ridiculously tight budget, and absolutely must have more storage than he can afford by building a machine with SSD.

I've used them for years - none of them have failed yet or been anything other than awesome. Fast, quiet, cool, low power usage - eventually HDDs will go the way of the floppy drive, and will be compared to their replacement in a similar fashion.
>>
>>52302738
We put drives in a raid for throughput and redundancy, why have a drive that's going to die if you're not going to have a mirrored one? And why have a SSD for speed if you're not going to double its throughput with another one and raid 0.
>>52302763
I don't need to know how to spell when I'm pulling 90k a year. Bitch
>>
>>52302942
> We put drives in a raid for throughput and redundancy, why have a drive that's going to die if you're not going to have a mirrored one?
VM / SQL benchmarking is the first thing that comes to mind

> And why have a SSD for speed if you're not going to double its throughput with another one and raid 0.
What is Tiered Storage, for $800, Alex?

Protip - Throughput also increases in RAID 1/5/6/10/50/60 (And RAID 3, but nobody uses RAID 3 anymore)

>I don't need to know how to spell when I'm pulling 90k a year. Bitch
How cute. But given that I manage exabytes of storage around the world, your argument is invalid. Most of what is manage is primarily 3par and EMC (Fuck EMC, and FLARE, btw).

Not to mention the servers with local storage (Mostly Exchange 2013 / 2016)
>>

>>
>>52303052

Got it.
>>
>>52303017
I was talking about throughput of a fucken peace of hardware VMs and SQL benchmarks could have their bottleneck almost anywhere not even going to go into differentiating disks across 6 SSD (yes I've done this before for funsies)

RAID 1? INCREASES THROUGHPUT? Microsoft azure litterly has an entire server rack dedicated to the processes of raid 1 because they lose so much throughput (alot of users) on the simple fact you're now writing one peace of data to two separate drive.

Are you 19? Fresh out of highschool for a year? Already with a+, mcsa and Cisco? Ontop of doing this in a year on my own time I finished a national diploma in networking and sever admin. I'm bairly out of my teenage years and already managing billion dollars of infrastructure across my country. I know what I'm talking about.
>>
>>52303052

>Microsoft azure litterly has an entire server rack dedicated to the processes of raid 1
Having first hand experience with the Azure hardware SKU's, I'll play along

1 rack, eh? For the some 500,000 servers? Yeah, I didn't think so.

And yes, a RAID 1 does increase overall sequential throughput by about 15%, random by about 35% and reduces disk latency by ~50%.

I was talking about throughput of a fucken peace of hardware VMs and SQL benchmarks could have their bottleneck almost anywhere not even going to go into differentiating disks across 6 SSD (yes I've done this before for funsies)
The bottleneck is IOPS, It's always IOPS. At enterprise scale, you're never CPU bound. You're always, ALWAYS waiting on disk.

You're not making any sense. But you've alluded to who you might be, so if I'm right, I will leave you with this...

Go back on your meds. You're tirade today on the company portal was frankly fucking embarrassing. I'm surprised you didn't get escorted out of the building.

>>
>>52305556

If you're really watching DVDs, then most.

Even my 13 year old laptop still runs DVDs. I just have to use a USB drive for the OS.

That's literally what he said, you fucking inbred.

The original point was that RAID0 decreases the life span of SSD's by 66% , which is retarded bullshit.

Are you really arguing with yourself to make yourself sound smart on an anonymous imageboard?

RAID1 only improves read speed, compared to single disk configuration. Random a bit faster than sequential, that's it. As such throughput in total is in fact a bit higher than single disk configuration, but all of the additional performance is in read only.

The meme started becuase a few idiots purchased meme SSDs (OCZ).

Notice how all the Vertex2's are gone but there were a shitload of builds with them a few years ago...

People who were not stupid got real SSDs, like Intel or Samsung.

My system drive is from 2009 and I have an extra drive in there (which I don't really need nor use) that dates back at least to 2004.

Why does it even fucking matter?

I have an HDD in my laptop but I only use it for school work so I don't care about how fast it boots up. I have two SSDs and a HDD in my tower because it's for gaming and video editing.

If your friend wants to get an SSD fuck off and let him.
