New 2016 ThinkPads announced:

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

>The performance/efficiency lost from buying a T430s could be worth it for upgrades/swag you could have for it.
that's true because I know the t460p will be expensive as hell, especially since I live in Germany. I would have at least to pay 1400€ or something. Can get an i7 t430s for about 450€..
>>
Is $150 a good price for an x220 with an i7 and 8 gigs of ram?
>>
>>52298817
I'd say so, I paid that much for one with less spec and sold it for $230.

>>52298737
Yup, but at least you will have a warranty on the T460p, T430s might have its warranty running out, then again the T430s isn't too difficult to maintain.

I would buy it. Normally they aren't less than $180

I used to have an SL510, and they're decent machines I guess, but nothing compared to T/X/W series Thinkpads. If you can get it down to maybe 60 USD or less it might be okay, but 120 is way overpriced.

My "like-new" x200 just arrived.

The lid hinge doesn't seem particularly strong. It slams shut at about >15 degrees and has about 1/16 inch "deadzone" where the lid flaps about and doesn't stay shut.

mSATA -> mSATA SSD
Expresscard - things like IC card readers, external graphics cards and USB 3.0 ports
As for the internal slots like the mPCIe -> there's a whitelist for wireless cards et al so you're kinda restricted on that unless you're willing to use a BIOS mod if available

Luck of the draw. If it's marked legit and priced accordingly (and has lenovo logos on it), it's likely legit. If ebay then it's still a gamble but as above, usually marked legit if it is so. If not marked then assume otherwise

It's from the Staples website.

From what I can tell, it's a new (not refurbished), 100% lenovo battery, but it's priced as about 60$ less than what I'd pay on Lenovo's website. So my concern arises from there.

hi /tpg/, I recently got a T430 with i5 3360, nvidia graphics, SSD and all the goodies for $300. Pretty sweet deal and it's running very nice so far.

I'm going to be using it mainly as a desktop replacement, which means it'll be powered on at least 16 hours a day. So I've been thinking: should I get a dock to ease the process of carrying it to and from university without all that hassle with the cables OR should I get one of those cooling pads for laptops to prolong its life expectancy?
Is there a middle ground solution? (dock with cooling fans?)

Temps are pretty normal from what I've been told (~40 idle, up to 85 at full load). I'm worrying though about its longevity because all of my previous laptops eventually died due to temperature related problems and I plan on keeping this at least 3 years.
>>
>tfw no 4-cell for X201s
Do you think it could come shipped with the laptop? The seller mentioned a working battery but I didn't care to ask him which type it is (since it will probably need replacement or renewal). I don't think I'm gonna need 6-cell and 4-cell would be a little slimmer.
>>
>>52309710

can you guys help me?
basically I put 9mm SSD into my X220, and it fit thankfully, then I installed Win 10, the worst part is my laptop now have trouble with the sound, basically there's this 'buzz' or lag every time I play some youtube or just video, how do I fix this? also my fingerprint is not working now... I'm going back to my old HDD if it keep like this
>>
>>52309710
>>52309760

I tried a cooling pad that I had and it made it hotter. Why you ask? Because the huge ammounts of air that's pushed inside got trapped inside and somehow fucked the internal pressure. Used a Coolermaster notepal U3. But just having something that lifts it up helps to bring the temps to 3-4C less.

Those laptops are not dekstop replacements, hence they will get quite hot if you want to game or do any demaning activities. Get a W series, they are designed for that.

>>
Are slimline models any worse than the originals?
>>
>>52313232
Generally speaking they are. You trade battery life, thermals, and serviceability/upgradability for somewhat reduced weight and thickness. It doesn't matter so much with the newer ones where the "original" models are ultrabook crap anyway, but for T420s vs T420 it's not even a competition to me, and I've used both machines. Only reason I'd go for a T420s is if I couldn't find a regular T420 with the 1600x900 screen, since the -s variant always has it.

Eh, I've been using it on my desktop for a few months, and I like it so far. I guess I kinda gave up too easily on the booting issue because of how much trouble I had with my old gigabyte motherboard. Those bios issues can be nasty, which is why I'm trying to figure out if I have to use MBR to dodge more problems on the thinkpad ahead of time.
