If you like thumb trackballs, you could give Elecom a try. Either M-XT3URBK (wired), or M-XT2DRBK (wireless)
It has a bit more comfortable shape (IMO) and a lot more buttons.
The ball is a bit less smooth and doesn't track as good as M570, but it's exactly the same size, so if you already have the M570, you can just swap the balls.
Just stay clear of the first version of it (it had a "1" in the name: M-XT1URBK or M-XT1DRBK - it had severe tracking issues and extremely light switches, and was generally pretty annoying, which is why they released the updated versions soon after)

Other than Elecom, you only options are either the good old M570 or Sanwa trackballs, but the old wired Sanwa is too expensive for what it offers and the new one is not very good quality.

But on the topic of these, I really can't stand using these for media applications (DAW, Lightworks, etc.), where a thumb trackball is infinitely more comfortable and usable. Whether it's clicking and dragging or using precision I just do it better on the thumb variant.

I am however very surprised at how small this new elecom is,

>>52298491
Complete shit m8, unit started shitting out on me when I was single clicking and it was double clicking shite, and the mouse wheel started shitting itself (5 months use btw.) Also it wasn't nearly as ergonomic as the elecom I have currently.

I love my L-Trac. I've had Kensingtons and Logitechs but nothing is as smooth as my L-Trac is after a week or so of use. It's the closest to perfect I've found in a pointing device.

It lets you plug in two more homebrew buttons too, if you so desire. That's cool as hell. What other mice let you add whole new buttons?

REAL MASTER RACE

currently have one resting below my right palm

my dad first gave me one of these when i was like 7 back in 2000, might have been a little later. i have never wanted to use any other mouse since then.
>>

Oh, and the thing is built like a tank. My Expert Mouse and Trackman Marble feel like happy meal toys in comparison. It's like the Model M of trackballs, except it's still being manufactured.
>>
>>52303342
i've got 2 of these and the wireless one. the wired ones both suffered click-switch problems since i used the hell out of them (gamed a lot, ut99/etc). it's actually really easy to replace the switches yourself in them. they're like 50 cents each switch, i bought enough for a few full repairs.

all the coloring has worn off the tops but they work great. do feel like i could use a larger one though, looking into >>52299499 but seeing used ones for like $45-50+ on ebay and hesitant to buy

I've heard that a love but weirdly enough that doesn't bother me much. I like the way my hand rests on the thing.
I kinda thing they could make the ring that prevents the ball from falling out rotate so that it could act as a scroll wheel since I rest my thumb on the lower part of the left button, my ring finger on the upper part of the right button and I have my index and middle finger on the ball. Clawing the outer ring to get a scroll wheel going seems like a decent idea. I wonder how hard it would be to make.

Yeah, it would probably be an optimal solution, but I'm not sure if Kensington doesn't have a patent on that - since they use it in most of their trackballs and nobody else does.

>>
>>52306416
>I also use three monitors, not sure if that would affect anything.
How would you use three monitors with a mouse? Wouldn't you have to keep picking up and repositioning the mouse on your desk? Trackballs don't have this problem, you can go 5x5 monitors if you want and still only need a tiny amount of desk space.
>>
>>52307077
or with 8 buttons like the one in OP
>>
>>52306416
>I also use three monitors, not sure if that would affect anything.
If you use one of the big trackballs (Kensington Slimblade, Expert, or, preferably CST), you can spin the ball and its inertia will move the cursor over a large distance.
I switched to a trackball when I went from a single 20" screen to double 27" screens
>>
>>52298491
I couldn't get used to it no matter how much I tried
>>
>>52295944

How hard is it to go from using a mouse to one of these? What motivates you to use these instead of a mouse? How good are they at speed and precision? For example would a professional Starcraft player have a reduction in playing ability from using these after a sufficient acclimation period?
>>
>>52309725
For most things (other than FPS) trackballs are much more comfortable and require less effort to use. No, they're not as fast but they're just as accurate. I find a normal mouse a pain to use at this point unless I'm playing a shooter.

I still have 2 Microsoft explorers left (1 at work) and 2 Logitech Cordless Trackmans (1 still in original box), but they're not good enough anymore since I got a big screen so I thought I'd give the Elecom a try - the symmetric designs are far from perfect. I just wish they made it bigger - especially the ball. Maybe they'll improve it in the next version.
>>
>>52309910
A good entry level trackball is the Logitech M570, I got it on Amazon for $20. It feels nice and works quite well, but the switches don't last very long.
Post an example of a $30 mouse and we'll try to find an equivalent. (The apple mouse costs probably around $100 and every trackball will be more comfortable than that abomination)
>>
>>52310178
>Post an example of a $30 mouse and we'll try to find an equivalent.

Shit I don't know. I haven't bought a mouse in 10 years now that I think about it. It looks like you answered my question. I've never used a thumb track ball. I used a finger track ball 2 or 3 times 15 years ago. I played unreal tournament on a friend's laptop. I didn't get enough time to get used to it or compare it with a mouse. I'll get one when I build this new PC I want.
>>
>>52310138
Nice, I have about 5 or so Microsoft trackball explorers at my house in varying condition that were a small fortune on eBay. I opted for the elecom to see if it would be a good successor to the Microsoft, and I agree that it needs to be bigger. They do come from Japan so I can see why they're built a bit smaller, maybe they didn't expect a large demand stateside
>>
>>52299499
>>52299512
are there any other thumb-ball mice as large or larger than these? i've had the logitech wired ones for a good number of years and while i have no RSI at all now, i feel a small bit of pain across my knuckles. i'm fairly neet-styled now, resting my hand on the mouse for up to 20hrs a day (falling asleep with hand on mouse, using it with kb in bed).
>>
Is it true what they say about the balls? The bigger they are the better they feel?
>>
>>52311137
That's what your mom said
>>
>>52295944
Thumb > middle finger
>>
What are the pros of trackballs? Do they destroy your hand less than common mice? Is it possible to game with them?
>>
>>52313383
pros would be very little space needed for their use since you don't move your arm/wrist at all, can flick ball to quickly move mouse across multiple monitors, can use it on any surface (like in bed, lap, on a cat, etc)
cons would be the time it can take to get used to using your thumb or fingers to move the ball (very short if using thumb), lots of different models that all feel and are used differently (logitech, kensington, etc), few left handed options if you needed those

gaming is just fine once you're used to it, better than using a controller thumb-stick for aiming but probably not as precise as using your whole arm+wrist if you're doing some kind of twitch-shooter. it's a lot less tiring, but you just shift the load to your finger/thumb
>>
>>52313911
>>52313383

to add: i use a thumb-ball mouse, so gaming was much more natural since your index fingers do the same things as before. using a finger-ball would take some getting used to as your thumb now has to hit those buttons while your index (and maybe middle) finger are on the ball for precision. it'd just take a little longer to get used to the new control scheme, but you'd no doubt get just as good as before provided to keep the ball and the casters holding it up clean before gaming.

that is another big con: the casters holding the ball will get gunked up with use. you'll need to pop the ball out and scrape out the gunk with your fingernail every so often.
>>
>>52310536
perhaps.
But I have fairly thin hands for an european and it's still too small for me.
IMO if they made the whole device 15-20% larger and then the ball itself another 20% larger on top of that, and maybe modified the position of the right click button, it would be perfect. As it is, it's just ok. (Also, it would help if they made it heavier)
>>
>>52295944
I still have two in my closet, I don't normally use trackballs anymore but maybe get them out for old time's sake. I don't remember any trackball users posting here!

The ambidextrous finger type is better for gaming because you are using multiple fingers to control the ball, and it gives you a nice variety of motions. I tried to play some old twitch shooters like Unreal Tournament and it's really fun. You can do a quick 180 by flicking the ball. If you are one of those call of duty trick shooters you can 360 no scope people easily.

My mouse is 1600DPI so in theory I just move my mouse 2 inches on 3x 1080p displays. Realistically I just move it about 4 inches to get from one side of the three monitors to the other side.

So no, I don't have to reposition my mouse on my desk what so ever so I don't have this problem what so ever. I don't see myself getting any more monitors so I guess I'm not really missing out at all.

Interesting how the Marble Mouse and Orbit track differently. The Marble Mouse has a red ball covered in dots like most Logitech trackballs. The Orbit has different colored balls. The balls are the same size but the Logitech trackball needs that ball to track effectively. The Kensington can use any ball.

My brother used to paint vacant, condemned houses and this house was full of toilet paper that some crazy lady collected. He found this mouse and he was allowed to keep it. I found it to be very rough for a trackball and not easy to aim or point. He sold it for 50-60 bucks IIRC.

I have that and it's not a terrible trackball, but the top left button broke during a move and the scroll wheel has always been super fiddly and inconsistent. Its bearings were bad about getting gunked up too, a problem I've not yet had with the L-Trac even after months of use.

I used to have one of these puppies way back in 2000 or so. It worked well and I loved the color+transparency of the orb, but its cord got destroyed by our dog. I wish more trackball manufacturers used balls like the one that old Orbit used.
>>
>>52320211
That is the best looking trackball ever. I wish my orbit looked that awesome. The black/silver orbit is the worst one because the ball jiggles around and it is shaped awkwardly. The Logitech Marble Mouse is pretty good though.
>>
>>52320251

The most current Orbit with the scroll ring has a blue ball but it's opaque. It doesn't jerk around like the black/silver Orbit does and you can actually scroll pages. I had one but sold it since I was getting tired of trackballs.
