So was this the holy grail of cpus?

Anyone still running this bad boy?
I'm still running with it and it still holds up very well after 5 years.
I'm still unsure of upgrading to skylake this year. Convince me /g/.
>>
>>52283774
Dont, the only reason why you'd want to upgrade is because you want less power consumption or a better IGP (which is fucking useless if you already own a dedicated GPU)
Also, check em

My cousin works for Intel and says the I7 is a fantastic chip set and you should upgrade.

Okay. I am kidding. Though I do have a cousin who works for Intel and was telling us about the I7 and I ended up getting one. Though I really should have spent more and upgraded other shit like a solid state and new graphics card instead of just buying a super CPU.

I bought a PC from a friend with an I5 and it runs just as good.. nah.. probably better than mine because he is a comp sci major working for Oracle and knew what he was doing more.

Too bad the 2500k will be left in the dust once DX12 comes out and the lack of hyperthreading/4 threads will finally finish the cpu off.

The 2600k however does have hyperthreading/8 threads so that cpu will last a bit longer.

CPUs run at faster frequencies, but at a much lower TDP these days. It's all about the mobile market, not because of AMD's lack of competition. Right around 2010, Intel rightly decided to focus on tablet/laptop-focused designs to prevent their sales from stagnating and declining due to the fall in popularity of the traditional desktop computer. Battery life, heat output, and performance were the three key points of Intel's new designs post-Ivy Bridge.

I've been looking to upgrade from my i3-2100 and my mobo which is currently a LGA 1155 socket, should I go for AMD or a new mobo with a LGA 1151 socket? I'm tired of Intel stealing my money and always changing socket types.

It's pretty accurate package temp is about 4 or so over hottest core for me. I haven't delided it so I've still got the garbage TIM which doesnt help.My case is 70ºc+ most of the time because of rendering and lol ATI so I'm fine with it sitting there.

It's probably time for a cleaning though

Yes.

970 is your bottleneck at higher res with vram.

Guys I have 8gb ram and i'm expanding to 16gb because i'm getting the GTX 980 and I think it's autistic to otherwise upgrade to 12gb in total so here's a question.

My previous ram memory was a crucial card which is an 8gb DDR3 @ 668MHz (9-9-9-24) card.

Does it matter what kind of 8gb ram card I should get and does it need to be ddr3 cl9 as well at the same speed?

>>52290560
Why do you need 16/12? Are you maxing out 8?

Also if they are different speeds it they will all run at the lowest speed. Latency is the oposite I believe.
If you can just get the exact same ram, but it shouldn't matter too much (you may have incompatabilities, it varies).
>>
>>52290807
I see.

I just called this store in which I was planning to purchase the ram and I asked this.

The dude told me it'd run on the highest possible speed so for instance, You own a cl9 ram stick and you add a cl10 stick, the cl9 stick will clock to cl10 and keep on the same timing.

Personally I think he's bullshitting me because i'm pretty sure ram has a maximum timing which it stays true to.

But yes i'll just buy 8gb more of the same stick I guess, thanks!

4GHz + 4.2GHz turbo
3.5GHz + 3.9GHz turbo

Still seems a bit much but that's probably it.

Of course this means nothing to anyone overclocking as the silicon lottery averages out to similar numbers for both chips.

>>52290834
If you have multiple sticks, excluding cases of overclocking, it'll run at the lower frequency and the higher latency.

>>52290902

I just wish that software devs and web front end devs would take note of this extended period of stagnation in computing power and stop bloating the hell out of their products because muh convenience. No, you really DON'T need those extra CPU cycles.

Shit pisses me off. I avoid bloat as much as I can in my own projects but there isn't but so much a single guy can do.
>>
>>52291356
That's why I use primarily open source software. I don't give a fuck at all about the botnet, but FOSS software tends to be lighter in general.

>>
>>52290767
It's not really. Skylake actually offers some pretty impressive gay men gains in CPU-bound scenarios, but obviously you have to do something silly like have an overclocked Titan X for 1080p for it to matter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDo-j00vUtw

It even takes the 4790K to school, which is clocked the same out of the box.

It's weird that Broadwell has basically been completely forgotten though. I know Intel sent it out to die, but it might be fun to see where it sits every now and then.

FOSS stuff is better sometimes, but there are some bits that could very easily be lighter.

LibreOffice for example, from a cold start creating a Writer document takes 120MB. Not horrible compared to other software these days, but it could probably have resource consumption comparable to Office 2000 if the team behind it made that a goal. Office suites really haven't changed much in that timeframe, so there's no reason for the increased usage.

i7s show some decent gains in more recent titles like Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3. Games are finally starting to better take advantage of more threads. Whether it's worth an extra €100 though... probably not. You'd be better served stepping up to a 390X.

This sounds kind of fucked but if I bought a 4790k from best buy or something and replaced it with my 4670k and returned it with my old CPU in the box instead would they notice?
>>
>>52292200
Amazon wouldn't. They give their returns a cursory glance and that's about it. I bought a Corsair K70 from their Warehouse section a few weeks ago, advertised as being in perfect condition. One of the legs to raise it up was snapped off and not in the box, meaning whatever jackass bought it originally broke it and returned it as unwanted.

Having said that, fuck you, Jamal.
