Instead switch your monitor to a multiple of 24Hz. Lots of nominally 60Hz monitors will sync to 48Hz or 72Hz. And if they can't, try 50Hz, which is close enough that you can slightly speed up videos and not notice.

Try various different modelines before giving up. Maybe reduced blanking will work.

To be honest, you don't really need configurations, mpv out of the box plays video far better than VLC to start with.

Assuming you are on Windows, the config file should be:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\mpv\mpv.conf

If the file doesn't exist, create it.
Copy and paste one of the configs from the OP into that file, and restart mpv.

It's the 24fps video that looks like trash, not the 48Hz. And at such low framerate strobing can only make things worse, so 24fps looks literally identical at any multiple of 48Hz.

Pretty much the insane config from the OP.
>>

mpv auto-detects this on Windows too now, so you don't need it in your config.

>nnedi3-neurons=64
mpv's nnedi3 is _really_ GPU intensive, even if you have a modern high-end GPU. I'm not surprised an nnedi3 config is dropping frames. It's basically not optimized enough for general use yet. If it works with 32 neurons or with nnedi3 switched off, this is probably not a bug.

I've given up on MPV after fighting it for days with the frame drops that weren't visible but annoying me for existing, mpc-hc with dxva2-native uses much less cpu (4.2-6.5% compared to mpv 30-35%) and drops 0 frames.

I'm not even sure on why I need to sift through all this config shit, it seems everyone here is trying to watch 240p chinese cartoons at 1080p to 4k or some shit, I just watch vids same resolution as my monitor. Is mpv offering nothing over mpc-hc/vlc for normal people? You should add it to OP if so because I feel memed out of 3 nights of free time.

I wasted probably 8 hours in total going through the manual, github issues, sourcing different clips and then comparing each setting change with clips to try work out why.

I only have 1080p files availabe, so I can only compare the cscale. I set that to ewa_lanczossharp and hwdec=auto, opened a video full screen, paused it and used prnt scrn, pasted it in paint, saved it as png. I closed MPV with shift-Q to save exact file position.
I then disabled hwdec, opened the video again, same frame, prnt scrn, pasted it in paint, saved as png.
The files matched exactly.
I even did the notepad++ compare plugin.

It seems like hwdec=dxva2_copy does not interfere with the filters.

In the end I set it all to direct3d_shaders because of performance. After file by file comparing different scenes, I couldn't notice any difference. Byte comparison did show a difference, but I guess my eyes are too bad for MPV.
>>
>>52290898
>In the end I set it all to direct3d_shaders because of performance.
I noticed no issue with hwdec either but ^^ This is exactly what happen to me, then I read and get told "Well, you know, opengl is good and d3d is bad soooo... d3d is deprecated and probably be removed soon :^)".

So what's even the point of me using mpv if I have to use d3d when mpc-hc has d3d, evr, vp9 experimental hwdec, etc etc.

The only thing I noticed from opengl-hq -> d3d was debanding filter but nothing else, I mean it's nice but hardly affects anything I watch anyway.
>>
Anon from >>52285861
I tried with :nnedi3-upload=shader got the same results. But i finally was able to monitor my gpu usage and i've got 100% spikes on GPU load, so i downgraded my config to the high quality one from the OP. But I'm still getting the same framedrops as before.
Is there some kind of a chance to make high quality interpolation work, or is my computer just too shit for this?
>>
>>52290974
Are you doing any upscaling? If not it's the same config.
>>
>>52291173
Well I'm using this:
vo=opengl-hq:interpolation:scale=ewa_lanczossharp:cscale=ewa_lanczossoft
video-sync=display-resample

Manual says that opengl-hq preset ha sigmoid-upscaling, so i guess i am using upscaling.
>>
>>52291281
I mean do you upscale your video like 720->1080 or your video resolution is the same as your monitor?
>>
>>52291316
Oh, yes i am using 720p source on 1080p.
>>
>>52291337
Did you try without scale=ewa_lanczossharp:cscale=ewa_lanczossoft it's not much better than default spline36, in some cases it's even worse.
>>
>>52290974
Are you checking your framedrops with the script? If yes, then that is the cause of your framedrops.
>>
>>52290961
Yep.
I did notice MadVR's Lanczos chroma upsampling method to be nice. As in, I actually noticed when it was using DXVA when the
>Use DXVA chroma upscaling when using native DXVA decoding
option was checked, but I don't notice a difference at all in MPV.
I do not like the debanding.

I have a feeling MPC-HC using EVR, if you don't use subtitles, EVR-CP or even MadVR to give better performance, but the audio in MPV is better to my ears, so I'm still using MPV, but with d3d_shaders.

Perhaps we two are just people with bad eyes.
>>

What's the alternative? Shitty Linux exclusive scripts that change your monitor's refresh rate using xrandr to make it less resource hungry? Buying 144Hz monitors with TN panels and shitty colors (and watching series on a TV doesn't bode well for the 144Hz shit anyway)?

Even Haasn uses mpv's interpolation in his config, and I'd rather trust one of the developers themselves rather than some faggot with a shit eating grin on /g/ who thinks he's the hot fuck of the evening by using some obscure way to interpolate a video.

Walk and use a car. Running is for fags too poor to afford a car.

There is no alternative for proper hardware.

I personally just don't interpolate.
Don't get me wrong, I much prefer 60fps source material over anything lower, but interpolating makes it feel off.

I really liked it when it all started coming up though. MadVR's smoothmotion, the televisions with their own forms of interpolation. It was quite nice.

i use bomi and i don't watch cartoons, is there any reason for me to just go vanilla mpv?
>>
>>52295854

Interpolation is garbage now and will remain garbage.

My television supports 23.976 Hz, and I use that. Because I am not a faggot.

Bomi hasn't been updated for a year now. Vanilla mpv is updated every single day, so there's a ton of new features in it that bomi doesn't have since it's outdated.

If you don't care about features, customisation or that kind of stuff, then go for the "if it works, don't fix it" approach. However if you'd like some more features (most notably video-sync=display-resample which you can read about here: https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/wiki/Display-synchronization#display-sync ) then vanilla mpv is more your thing.

So now what should be great to add or improve inside mpv?
Except some performance improvements in nnedi3 and interpolation?

I am totally in love with mpv on iMac 5K, everything else run like shit.
It's sharp and very smooth, the audio is perfect.

I need the plex release now!
I can't wait, we are already in 2016 and no free release.
That must be forbidden to make people waiting like that.

Time to do like the second Sherlock Holmes novel:
Do cocaine until we find a problem.

can anyone tell me a script or something to give mpv a GUI like VLC?

like so that i can see whats in the playlist
>>
Why people here are so hard on madVR?
It has proper HDR files support and better nnedi3 and sharpen algorithms.
Smoothmotion in madVR is much more optimized than mpv interpolation at the moment.

Automatic refresh rate switching works perfectly fine on Windows with MPC-HC and madVR.
