Modern household demands are nearly all wifi. Pity there's no decent diy wifi microtix router and no client devices that can exceed 897mbs
>>
>>52275929
Used to run a Q9400 with 8GB RAM on an ASUS P5Q Premium as a combined router and home server right until the motherboard died. I used Windows Server 2012 R2 on that since I had a couple of Wangblows-only game servers running, and desu it's a lot easier to set that up as a 100% functional router than it is with Linux.
Right now I'm just using this shitty Netgear thing that my ISP gave me, which can't even handle the full 300 mbps of my connection since I don't have the budget to build a new server right now.
I'll probably go with some kind of Linux distro next time when I have the money to get a decent server up again. Been wanting to try getting router and server stuff going on Linux, just lacking the hardware currently.

>>52276228
99.9% of household demands are also just about nothing. Also it's a fun and interesting adventure.

1700 series tops out at only a few Mbps - tops. If you have FiOS or a cable modem, you'd have to spend some serious bank on a Cisco router capable of routing that at wire speed. A cheap-ass Atom or Celeron PC running BSD/Linux/PfSense will spank any Cisco router at a fraction of the cost.

http://www.cisco.com/web/partners/downloads/765/tools/quickreference/routerperformance.pdf

Unless you need to run EIGRP or some other proprietary or seriously advanced feature, you're usually better off using a general-purpose PC.

Stock or custom firmware? I just got one based on the Wirecutter article.
>>
what about powerline?
>>
>>52277405

Yes, just static routes. I pull zone data for each site so that hosts can be reached by domain name. Also, I use Samba to propagate netbios names so that shares and printers can easily be browsed and accessed from any site.
>>
>>52277608

I'm a consultant but double as the network administrator for my company. I use IPv6 overwhelmingly for administration, but there are a number of things consumer-grade ISPs block on IPv4 and IPv6, including NetBIOS and SNMP, which makes printing and windows-oriented things a pain. The tunnel makes it one happy LAN, albeit with a little more latency.

Well shit, just came over from /diy/ looking for a QDDTOT thread and here is this thread. Neat.

Anyone got a protip on a ADSL2+ router modem that;
> Supports a/b/g/n.
> Has enough gain to blanket a suburb.
> DD-WRT compatible (not a deal breaker but I'd like to mess with it)
> Can transmit its way out of a faraday cage
> USB storage compatable
> Can be used to beam snugglenets to the moon with nothing more than a pringle tin and an accurate azimuth mount.

I cannot emphasise how important a strong radio is.

My current piece of shit is dropping WiFi connections and falling out of DSL sync every few days. File transfer speed between machines is lucky to hit 100kb/s, and I can't even stream MP3's from my server to my toys without it dicking out on me every 30 seconds.

Thoughts /g/ents?
>>
>>52287618
and you're also hilarious. Alright, I see you are a bit lightheaded faggot. I'll let you know EXACTLY what I meant by those things:
-SSD means Solid State Drive. SSID means Service Set Identifier. SSD != SSID, and this spelling mistake is enough for me to know that you don't really mean this whole "networking" stuff seriously.
-ftp means file transfer protocol. It is capable of transferring data through the network, but it is not encrypted, alas not safe. yes you may use it because common_sense.pak is installed on your system. SCP is generally recommended for moving data safely, since it uses encryption. I bet you also use telnet to access your network devices, right fagget? ;^)
-we use Mbps for general speed measuring in the IT like when we measure drive speed.

You should just shut up and quit /g/. We don't need your almighty "I know everything, better than you" attitude. You should just go back, do your job and learn networking and general IT knowledge properly.

Asus RT-N18U here. It's the cheap version of the N66U, and it's only missing the gigabit wifi (which I don't use anyway).

Has gigabit ports, can run Tomato, and can do routing at gigabit speeds as well. Perfect and cheap solution for my 500mbit line.

Heres a serious reply

Unplug microwaves
And operate in 5ghz as long as your laptop and shit supports it (hell pretty sure my note2 supports 5ghz)

Try that first

Microwaves, fluorescent lights and any other local source of RF have been ruled out. When it first started glitching I killed every branch on the electrical dizzy board except the one that was powering the router and computers (same branch) and left a desktop and laptop running over a weekend, both machines showed 9 disconnects in event logs at the same times, reporting that the AP could not be found for up to 10 minutes at a time. As far as the (basic) logging onboard the linksys reported, there was no problem over the entire period. My laptop does not drop at home like it does in the shop and I am 2 kilometers from civilisation at this location, there's not much to get in my way out here best as I can tell.

> And operate in 5ghz
a/b/g only on pic related shitbox I'm afraid, though I should have listed that above as a requirement. I just assumed most new hardware would support 802.11ac anyway.

Chumpcast keeps sending me bullshit in the mail:
>What's Happening? Your current modem is no longer capable of supporting the speeds of your Xfinity Internet service. To get the most out of your service, we need to replace your existing device with a Wireless Gateway, which we will do at no additional cost.

bitch I don't want your bullshit wireless gateway crap. I already get 180 down through the current one, leave me alone.

I'd rather have a proper web interface for stuff like that. doesn't matter what the shit's running for just an access point so long as it's stable.
half the network is 10/100 because it's through EOP warts and I'm poor as fuck. else I'd have a nice small dual GigE atom box running the gateway/firewall and be able to afford all the Cat6 to wire up the entire house.

also, that buffalo came with DD-WRT. being Ralink-based it limits what I can do with it so I just updated it to the latest available 2015 build at the time and it's been rock-solid stable. I don't get why people INSIST on using OpenWRT when it doesn't come with any sort of web interface by default. I'm not manually editing iptables if I don't have to.

Have the v1 as well and replaced the antennas with 9dbi ones. This would make my 3-4th year with it. I had DDWRT on it before but switched back to OEM firmware since I no longer needed it to do anything tricky. I'd say it's reliable, barely needs rebooting and speeds are quick.

ISR 2951 with an ASA 5510 - Complete waste, we were supposed to bring in 7 PtP T1s and a ESM, which never happened, so all the EHWIC slots are going empty. Could be running the whole place on the 5510 alone.

what's the deal with the the SATA drive, ATX PSU, and PCIe card?
>>
R7000. Quite decent, delivers 1gbit WAN-LAN easily, over 600mbit wireless. Drawback is no SFP port.
>>
>>52303582
>SATA drive
More reliable than USB plus a lot faster. Supermicro's own SATA DOMs have a special power connector so you can hook it up straight to the board rather than needing a line to the PSU.
>ATX PSU
PicoPSU, the actual power brick for it is underneath the shelf.
>PCIe card
Just a dual port NIC, I needed a vlan tagged port going to another room but I don't have a managed switch small enough to put there.
