Show me your servers /g/, be it shitty plex servers like mine or absolute monsters. Specs and purpose required, pics are a bonus.

>HP Microserver Gen8
>Xeon E3-1240v2
>16gb ECC ram
>iLO
>temporary 120gb Sandisk SSD for OS
>4x4TB WD Redmemes
>3TB Toshiba external drive

Mainly used for FTP, SMB, Plex for ~6 people, centralised backup for 2 other PCs, automatic photo upload for my phone and a few VMs for testing.

It's a fucking excellent little server if you dont need more than 4 drives. Cost me £170 new but the xeon is an upgrade. Base model comes with 2gb ram and a celeron g1610t which by the way was plenty up until i started more than 2 or 3 people use plex. The same heatsink handles the Xeon pretty well too so it's quiet as fuck, one 120mm fan and a 60mm PSU fan. Also has a dedicated iLO ethernet port which is handy as fuck.

Playing with the idea of getting a dedicated GPU for steam streaming.

UPS
>APC Back-UPS 750VA, not used
>APC Back-UPS 1500VA

Someday I will upgrade my home server to better components and more storage. For now it does it's job.

The DL360 looks cool, but it's loud as fuck and uses too much power.

The first UPS needs batteries. The second probably could use new batteries as well, but holds up fine.

Anyone know where to get the rackmount ears for the 1500VA UPS? They are completely different than the 750VA, which has it's ears. I got both off craigslist, so they were "as-is."

Sorry for the potato phone pic. Maybe someday I will borrow my sister's nice camera to take some pictures.

This mobo only has 4 SATA ports, but I can go with 6 or more. I don't know who the fuck Sparkle is, but it's a Titanium PSU, can't be that bad. In case I go with more SATA ports, I would have to change everything except the RAM.

>>
>>52269603
I'd get a better quality power supply. That's the one component you don't want to cheap out on. Personally I use Seasonic, PCPower & Cooling, and some Corsair. Seasonic is god-tier.

Red drives are pretty good now, from what I have been seeing. HGST are good too. Those ones you linked to are archival, so they will be slower and aimed at high reliability.

>>52269647
Smoothwall is a hardware firewall for my network. Home server is for media and file storage. It's where I store all my pictures, music, movies, tv shows, and computer backups.

Yeah, I wish the DL360 was a newer gen version so it wasn't so power hungry. I could handle the noise, but it just uses too much power. I want to learn 3D rendering, and wanted to have a render server.

You can run non-ecc ram just fine for most things, on home kit. I have done so just fine for ages. I can tolerate things failing and data getting lost or corrupted. Especially if it is just steam games or stupid imageboard macros + animus

This becomes a problem when people apply this thinking to their sysadmin job with production systems. (Who buys WD greens for production storage?!)

It's not really functional enough to get a proper, user friendly configuration going. You WILL have to at the very least do shit like log in with TeamViewer to unfuck things or even need physical access to the machine itself.

If you're thinking about setting up a VM with GPU passthrough and just streaming off that, it's going to be more hassle than you imagine.

I do, but I had to do a lot of work to get them to work right. They are heavy duty sliding rails from the early 2000's for HP or Dell servers.

I had to use pic related (these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004KFBLV8), a lot of measuring and guessing, a lot of drilling, and a lot of time to get everything to line up. I used three on each side.

They work, but aren't perfect. I know when I bought the case a few years ago I saw a Rosewill rail kit, but haven't been able to find it since.

this was 2013-ish build ..

1U supermicro dual Atom
2gb RAM
2x80gb 2.5 HDD mirror for boot
quad port ESATA with port multiplier
3xFour-bay eSATA JBOD
12x 2GB 7200 drives in RAID6
Debian OS

The supermicro is in a 19" rackmount chassis, only 10" deep. The JBOD boxes sit on top. It ends up being a 3U high by 10" deep server with 14TB of space.
Runs headless in the basement. Apps it serves :

Asterisk for house VoIP
Plex + MythTV for video
Pydio for remote file storage
Squeezebox server for audio to various wifi radios

Works quite well, draws 100-130w running, runs 24x7 with power management disabled.

tl;dr : no need for an i7 in a basement PC that does nothing but serve files.
>>
>>52272634
It works pretty well for a lot of games, most of the issues I'd say are with shit like launchers, some stability issues, some loss of focus issues and shit like that. Those require either physical access to the host, though in some cases you can get away with fixing it with TeamViewer.

Still, if you want to sit your ass in front of your TV and play something, you probably don't want to keep running back to the host or to fuck with TeamViewer to launch games, close games properly and fix whatever issue pops up.

Basically, core functionality is quite good but it feels beta-tier at best and missing features that should be essential (you can't even turn off the client without closing the game, well, you can if you kill the streaming process, but what kind of shitty solution is that?).

Nope, no raid at all. Drives are essentially individual. At least, at the controller level. I run Windows storage spaces, and tune redundancy to the individual volume.
>>
>>52272546
Correct, you have to use a vhd. Iscsi presents as a block device, and essentially the vhd is presented directly. Storage spaces offers a better way of carving up the LUNs

What setup do you have in storage space, mirrored or parity? What drives and what performance are you getting out of them?

Is this a good deal for a mini-itx ecc mobo?

Is ecc a meme?
>>
>>52276847
It depends on the volume. SQL and Hyper-V are mirror. Transfer is stripe (no redundancy) and Profiles is RAID 5. I haven't looked into performance too much, but I'm not having any disk queue length issues.

And there is one exception. Media is an esata RAID 5, with 4 4TH drives. For some reason, I can't get it to present as JBOD anymore, and I don't care enough to replace the enclosure and controller.

They're really cool if you've got a dedicated room for them with server racks, otherwise they are very, very loud. These things are quite literally a jet turbine whenever I rev them up. Pic related, it's just the Fans.

Yes. Most audio gear is 19 inch.

Yeah, I have a DL360G5 and it has those little 60mm 10k or 15k RPM fans. They're made for datacenters, not home use. Still fun to play around with, though.

Not to sound like a retard but it sounds like you have a lot more drives than 4? Stripe requires 2 drives and raid 5 at least 3?

For real though, a new Proliant? I'd rather go with something like pic related unless the former includes ECC and all that cash stuff. I don't know how badly freenas needs ECC or how much RAM_GB per storage_TB it needs.

ESXi is probably trhe most user friendly virtualizer I've used.
>>
>>52277661
The business model for ESXi confuses me, which is why I haven't tried it yet.
Do they make money from support like RedHat, and you can simply download and run ESXi yourself, or is ESXi something you'd have to pirate/trial to give a try?
>>
>>52277042
What are those things in between the fans?
What could they possibly have in there that requires that much static pressure?

Does that generate lift?
>>
>>52277966
You'll get 60 days all features then after it it still works but without those premium features.
I like xenserver more for home use, it's fairly simple and straight forward and then you have proxmox never really tried it but sounds okay
>>
>>52277966
VMWare's licensing is hell. Worse than Microsoft's.

There is an evaluation period of 60 days that can be abused by reinstalling every 60 days, but their is a free gimped license.

https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/evalcenter?p=free-esxi6

Supposedly there are keygens out there for the full version, but the free license works for me. Note this doesn't include vSphere so it's going to be bitching that you won't be able to use any features past 5.0

Anyone have any experience in using an embedded CPU motherboard for a low-power 24/7 media server using RAID/port multiplier PCIe cards to add more SATA ports?
>>
>>52278041
The thing in-between the fans is just the housing on the fans. Personally I use the fans to create a hover-server. All my anime and porn follow me around in hover-mode wherever I go (if I ever leave my basement)
>>
>>52273422
Raspberry Pis are terrible as fileservers.
They don't have SATA, USB 3.0, or Gigabit Ethernet.
You really require at least ONE of these three to stream a movie of respectable size (20GB).

But if by porn you mean "gigabytes upon gigabytes of kinky Tibetan throat pummeling comics" then it will work

I wanna Build a home server for Plex or Kodi (what ever has better LAN video streaming Support), ownCloud and maybe mail with Postfix and Dove Coat. I found this shitty HP Pavilion pic related with a Intel Pentium 4 525 @2.93 ghz and 1.5 Gb ddr1 ram . Is this enough to run what i need /g/?
>>
>>52278892
Depends on how many people are on your plex account. Your CPU will struggle though.
>>
>>52269182
>i5 4670
>ECC memory
Why
>>
>>52278936
It will be probably be one person usually and at most most 2 streaming on LAN at a time.
>>
>>52278892
Possibly but it'll be a stretch if it does. Pretty much any hobo build is going to work much better than that thing.
>>
>>52278892
As others have stated, it depends on what you're streaming. The benchmark score is 327 for that CPU. Plex (because it can not currently do GPU transcoding) requires a score of 2000 for a 1080p 10mbit stream.

I don't know about Kodi. If it can do GPU transcoding then I imagine you will have much better results.
