It's not just 4chan, it's the whole Internet. But to address your question:
1. 4chan becoming redditized with boards and board communities that act separately instead of as 1 piece of a larger pie.
2. A lack of people with backbones and good ideas.
3. Trolls trolling trolls, a house divided cannot stand etc.
4. Too many legitimately stupid/deluded people.
5. Too many overly serious people.
4chan and the rest of the Internet will likely fail for the same reason modern democracies are more akin to a corporatocracy, lazy uninformed content people who won't start caring until they've voted all of their freedoms away.
In my opinion 4chan is too far gone to comeback, the people with any power don't care and the few users who do are just a drop in the ocean of idiotic consumers.(another good homage to our failed governments around the world, 1 informed vote in an ocean of uninformed votes.)
Also it's not simply that I think the moderation/higher-ups don't care as much as I've noticed them actively working against "problematic" aspects of 4chan which is why I have no doubts it will continue tumbling down.

This all started around 2007/08 when Dumblr came about and Kikebook started gaining traction. It collided with other factors like everyone having a smartphone with internet access, Digg dying and Reddit coming about, then 4chan trying to do epic raids and bringing lots of attention to it (chanology in 2010 being the most infamous), 4chan moderation going full nazi (I still remember /v/ being /b/ 1.5, half of the threads were vidya, a quarter was porn and the rest random garbage, it moved incredibly fast too), posting timers, captchas and so on.
These things all ruined this website, it wasn't just one thing but lots of factors coming together.
As for the internet as a whole, concentration and monetization happened. MS, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Yahoo own most of the western internetosphere and the websites most normalfags visit on a daily basis. It's no longer the wild west it was for the people that grew with it in the late 90s/early 2000s. If you don't make money you do not exist.
4chan used to be intelligent grown ups acting like 14 year old retards. It was a blast.

I migrated to a few smaller chans and it's great. There's actually good posts and OC, mods actually post, and the tripfags aren't annoying. I'm having a great time, it's like rediscovering 4chan all over again. I just check in with /g/ time to time to see what you guys are up to.

Pretty much this, people using epic me me's to avoid having to actually discuss something. The trend of calling people shills/reddit/tumblr/cuck/whatever has gotten a lot worse, back in the day it was just nigger, but if someone was giving an at least somewhat valid response you wouldn't get called a nigger unless it was over the top/fucking retarded. I think the idea of shills is so scary to people that people are overreacting. I also think a lot of people just say things in a typical "shillpost" type of way to drum up drama and further the meme that people get paid to shitpost.
I almost miss cross-board raids, too, because they provided something new and mold-breaking. I also think moderation has taken a slide, but I only have really witnessed this on /x/, which, lets be honest, is the worst board and has been constantly a "why hasn't this been deleted yet" type of thing. I also know that on a few boards there's some degree of bias towards certain posts by moderators that aren't in line with what the majority of the board desires, which has only really become noticable for me recently.
It also really doesn't help that jamoot is adding loads of new boards that are poorly implemented rather than purdging things.

4chan isn't fun anymore because we all grew up with it. Everything we loved about the site then has now gone mainstream and been monetized, to the point where even normies want nothing to do with it. Plus, a lot of us are on here constantly, making it feel less special by overstaying the experience. For me, part of the novelty of 4chan was rushing home after school/uni classes to go on it. Now that some of us are not in school anymore, that novelty has worn off.
Everyone says this that 4chan is shit but where are the good websites.
