If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Hello /tpg/

I got my first Thinkpad today. It's an x220t. Speccy related. Immaculate except for the outer housing being chipped on the front left corner.

I'm going to use it for school so it's going to have Windows on it as the main partition. I was wondering if I should keep 7 on it or use 10.

This is the corner damage. It makes the housing slightly askew and gently pressing on it puts it back into place without the damage causing it to depress further than it should so I'm not worried about it.

The express card slot looks fine but I can't no for sure until I put it to use.

Got mine a few hours ago, first encounter with a thinkpad.

Honestly, it just seems like a machine that does every single thing I want it to.
Decent specs, amazing build quality, completely silent, awesome battery life. Add on top of that the build quality (I may be alone in thinking this, but this thing is sexy as fuck) and you have a machine that just ticks every box if you need a good Uni/work laptop.

Plus, it costs next to nothing. It has no marketing besides a small enthusiast community and the supply is far greater than the demand. I mean holy fuck, this thing is great.

Hi tech guyse!

I'm to spend a nice amount of moniez (~$2000) on a laptop that's got to be mine for scientific work. By boss wants me to go MAC because of "hurr durr keynote works in conferences" and "everyone has it".
I discard those arguments as trash and search for alternatives to work with Unix-based systems.

Can $2000 ThinkPads compete with MACs in terms of longevity, weight and performance?
What about damage repairs? Macs are apparently pretty nasty when it comes to do that, are Thinkpads better in that way?
On performance: I'd want enough RAM to test out some 3D simulations that will run fully on Clusters anyway, and playing with the thought of keeping the pre-installed Windows for Games.

I don't need any specific advice on whether X, W, or ... but my question is essentially Apple vs. Lenovo.
Thankx in advance!

Items that cost less than 10€ are exempt from the import tax. Individual EU states can increase this up to 22€. Gifts up to 45€ are also exempt.
You can read about it here: http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/resources/documents/common/publications/studies/execsummary_lvcr-study.pdf

Ebay tells how much additionally you need to pay to cover the tax. The customs duties are fixed on their end.
On the ocassion that an item doesn't have the import duties covered, the customs may actually open it to determine the price and then charge you.
Chink-tier tricks can be employed to somewhat avoid paying the tax, like asking the seller to list the item as a gift or a small goods that costs 10 or less euros when shipping. I remember reading customs will overlook such items only if they come from China, anything from the West has a high chance of getting caught.

Shipping a laptop from USA definitely costs more than 20$.

>>52272699
VAT applies to the shipping price also.
>>
>>52273011
T460p is probably the best you can get out of newer line. Remember the letter p, the other model T460 is probably just a more shoddy version (as with T440p vs T440).

I WOULD however suggest to look at HP's Zbook workstations and Dell Precision. If you're not bothered by a less than perfect trackpoint then check them out.
>>
>>52273403
the problem with HPs and Dells is part availability in some places outside the US. Where I live, thinkpad parts are common and easy to find.
>>
>>52273403
thanx man.
What about those Yoga-pads? Seems like pretty cool stuff I could do with them for presentations, but do they have such flaws as the guide says the R L Z E series have?
>>
>>52273901
what about let's say Europe?
>>
>>52274054
If it doesn't say thinkpad before the yoga part then it's just another consumer tier thing. Not that the thinkpad yogas are anything special. They also have shitty keyboard. No idea about the newest ones announced.
>>
>>52274054
There was an anon 2 threads ago that got warned about power connectors dc-in or whatever bullshit is called lol. They break on some yogas.

With normal thinkpad series you have the IBM engineering, or whatever IBM legacy that still remains so you won't be having too much issues besides cracked palmrests.

I have a Lenovo t420. It came with winblows 7 on the HDD. I had to put BIOS in "legacy" mode in order to do away with microsuck and put gnu + Linux on it.

My question is this:
I have a 250gb SSD with another Linux based OS on it (Debian based), but whenever I put the SSD in it, BIOS recognizes it but it will not boot up into the SSD. I don't know why.

Anyone of the TP /g/urus have any idea as to why this is? And how can I go about fixing it?

I know that the SSD works because it boots up fine in other computers I have put it in. It is aggravating for obvious reasons. I would prefer to use the SSD instead of the HDD.

Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance my fellow /g/entlemen.

I made an script which triggers when the laptop switches from battery to AC and viceversa. It basically does
echo 650 | tee /sys/class/drm/card0/gt_max_freq_mhz

when it's running on battery and
echo 1200 | tee /sys/class/drm/card0/gt_max_freq_mhz

on AC.

>shouldn't it be automatically controlled by the driver?
Yes, the driver switches frequencies fine, but if I underclock the CPU and disable turbo(with intel_pstate and tlp), the GPU is not aware of the turbo state and it wants to go over 650 MHz, boosting the CPU in the process (even when no_turbo is set!). That's why I had to set the frequency limits manually. 650MHz is the max. non-turbo frequency for my 3320M.

I had no problem when I took my X61T and Pixel to El Salvador, they just like it removed from your bag, maybe the pixel saved me from them turning on my X61T.

There will be a tablet version of the X1 Carbon coming soon, or at least rumored.
>>
>>52280336
Just a standard SanDisk 240gb SSD. Not much information other than that. I have used them in many other PCs. Desktop (custom build) Asus gaming, Dell inspiron mini. It just doesn't work i n my t420. Can't figure out why. It is very annoying.

I would love to get it working. After that, I will have my t420 exactly how I want it. Unless....I can figure out how to put a fx6300 in it, but I doubt that is possible.

I purchased a Libreboot X200 from Minifree a few months ago and I'd just like to comment a bit about my experiences with it, since I occasionally see people ask about it.

Shipping was relatively quick given that it was shipped overseas. The keyboard uses the UK layout which is a bit different but on the whole was quite easy to adjust to. There were a few signs of light use, as is to be expected with a used ThinkPad, but otherwise it was delivered in good condition and well-cleaned. If you're wiling to spend a little extra for a free-as-in-freedom machine, I would recommend Minifree. My only complaint was that I had to purchase a new 9-cell battery, as the one provided was small and made for shit battery life.
>>
>>52281467
Thanks, I was curious. I hadn't thought about the keyboard layout. I assume Libiquity wouldn't have that problem for Americans.
>>
>>52280582

What were you doing around here? El Salvador is pretty nice for tourists. An X220 goes for $320 on the craiglist equivalent,
>>
>>52281366
Haha, I have just acquired them over time for no real reason other than they were cheap and I couldnt say no. good taste though brother! I actually got the x220 on craigslist for 30 bucks cause the mobo was bad. I bought a replacement on ebay for around 70 dollars and have a good machine.
>>
>>52281542
Presumably. I'm an American myself. Libiquity started selling after I had already received mine from Minifree, or I'd likely have gone with them.

Speaking of a W520, finally got mine up and running today. Moving is such a pain in the ass.

The other day I met a girl who purported to be a graphics designer, she bought a Lenovo Y50 because "muh dedicated graphics" but didn't bother to check whether or not the screen actually covered more than 50% RGB. My line of work doesn't even require colour accuracy and even I'd be pissed off with such a shitty screen. Thank god I have 95% gamut with a colorimeter so the colours in my spreadsheets and Chinese cartoons are absolutely perfect.

Not really sure what to do, never considered upgrading since I bought it. Any advice is mad appreciated bros
>>
>>52285827
It might be worth a look at a new ThinkPad. If you still want the mobility, don't go any higher than an X230, but if you need more than that, consider the W520, i5 or i7 depending on what "strenuous tasks" you have to do. But no matter what, an SSD would be a great thing to implement in any ThinkPad you're using.
>>
>>52285986
Hmm, I might just try an ssd as the sole hd. And the tasks being hosting a server and running an ide while also monitoring shit with consoles running pretty much all day, also dual monitors. Don't really want to upgrade as it works ok it just has some fat delays some times
>>
>>52285728
Yes, but be prepared to pay more as it's a really rare laptop.

The display had some production issues AFAIK so that's why a limited amount of X201s were produced compared to the X200s.

It's so-so. You *are* getting an i7 BUT you don't want an i7. Because despite the TDP being the same, the i7 runs hotter for little performance gain. Also unlike the regular X220, you don't get USB 3.0 anyway
Chances are because he's not lenovo, he can't not include the windows sticker and thus give a discount as it's tied to the machine and he won't gain anything from doing so
If it was somehow brand new and unopened, $400 wouldn't be *too* unreasonable, even with added Europe prices. Try to haggle and see if you can shave 30-50 euros or something, maybe more just for the sake of it

You are not carrying anything around. It is something that goes into your laptop to replace the expresscard placeholder in your laptop.

It is sort of shitty because when you pull your flashdrives out, you can sometimes take out the adapter also due to the way it connects and stays in the laptop.

768p at 12.5 inches is fine, but I have been spoiled by better IPS FHD screens on other laptops. Do not expect a good quality panel, even the IPS ones are subpar compare to $100 chromebooks. It's the one and only gripe I have with thinkpads.

Hey /tpg/, I have a dumb question.

I want to buy a 9 cell battery for my X220, and my two options are:
Buy from Lenovo directly (for about 193.00 CAD)
Or buy from Staples (for about 129.10 CAD).

So the question is, why exactly is it considerably cheaper to buy a battery from Staples than it is from Lenovo? As far as I can tell the cheaper option isn't some refurbished piece of trash, but the stark contrast still unsettles me. Can someone with more experience shed some light on the issue?
>>
>>52289681
Not as much as you enjoy overpaying for memes
>>
Am I right in saying that the x220 tablet ALWAYS comes with an IPS screen? There are only two option for screens on the thinkwiki and both of them are IPS but I rarely see them advertised like that on ebay. Is that because you can always assume it's an IPS anyway?

The display connector on the t420 cannot support it (either that, or there are no good IPS 1600x900 compatible panels).
The chinese have created a display adapter which can be used to connect a FHD IPS display (they have even managed a QHD screen). But these display adapter kits are hard to get a hold of from china, and there are apparenly lots of bugs (flickering).
>>
>>52290825

Lenovo is having difficulties finding the right display panels because no one makes 14" 16:10 IPS

We don't need to support our claims, everything not business/utilitarian is not hacker and not good and scoffed at, take it to the proper thread.

Plus the Yogas are all over the place with their operating systems, slate, convertables.

Just check sold listings on eBay for Yoga Pro 2 and you should be able to tell by yourself if you overpaid or not.

If the laptop serves you well for at least 6 years, the price doesn't even matter imo.

X230

>i5 3320M
>8GB Ram
>180G SSD
>IPS Panel
>Still under warranty until March

Paid 300 eurobucks for it, it's basically immaculate except for that scratch on the lid.

Not a bad deal right? I didn't mind paying a little extra for the peace of mind of it still being under warranty

Very nice, I sold X230 IPS laptops for $350 each so given euro tax on laptops, you did well.

Shit posting from my new t420. This thing is built like a tank, it looks completely unused as well. The 1600x900 panel is infinitely better than the small one on my x201 I sold.

Got it plugged in a gaymen laptop that never gets used with a dead battery. Battery is retarded exspensive. It is also retardedly large. Works fine in that laptop, won't work in t420.

It's strange.

Couldn't post because my Wi-Fi refused to work, but soon after I posted the seller replied it's 1440x900 indeed so I bought it. Should arrive in a week or two. Now gotta search for that black Note Pro. Or maybe some other tablet with Wacom digitizer, but it appears to me that Samsung dominates that niche.

Didn't see it up until now, but thanks anyway.
Though Thinkwiki list only 1440x900 option on X201s' page, it says it may also have another display on the screens list. Maybe they meant they're compatible?

So, my x230 with backlit keyboard came in, but the seller scammed me on the keyboard layout. It's Swedish.

Is there a possibility to replace just a few keys or just the print on the keys?

When you say it doesnt work, do you mean you cannot see it in the bios, or you cannot detect it in the OS once booted in.

Okay gee, help me with this shit.
I'm getting rid of my porrfag G3258+GTX660ti gayming setup and I'm gonna use a thinkpad as my main and the only computer. I can't decide between x230 and t430;
x230 with i5-3320m, 8GB RAM, 180GB SSD and non-IPS display.
OR
T430 with i7-3632qm, 16GB RAM, 180GB SSD, 1600x900 screen, NVS-5400m GPU, 2TB HDD in ultrabay caddy.

I fail to see a purpose of having a quad core i7 in a laptop, and I can't really justify having a much bigger laptop just to get a shitty GPU capable of basic gayming (fallout 4 works at hd resolution and low settings).

Which one should I get? Should I pull the trigger on x230 or go full wild on t430 and maximize it's specs?

Neither laptop is adequate for gaming. For the rest of your argument, do you want portability or power?

anyone have experience with the T400 vs T200 who might comment on this? Gonna purchase one today,.

Is it vertical? Happened to my X201T. When pressed, it would change colours or disappear at all for some time. After some time it transformed into a pretty thick black line (still usable though). It seems a cable got fukt, but it's a one deep in the panel (it's one of those ribbons near the upper edge of the screen, not the cable between MB and screen assembly). Dunno if the same thing happened to yours.

>browsing CRUs/FRUs for X201s
>that feel when the palmrest is unique for X201s and can't find any without the touchpad
I'd get rid of that shit cause it looks so ugly and is so useless.
