I'm rather new to the programming world, having only spent two years learning Java so far. I've learned most of the major concepts of the language, and want to put my skills to the test and try my hand at developing a piece of software, or contributing to an existing open-source project. Before I take that step, I'd like to ask a few questions, and their answers may prove useful to other people in a similar situation to my own.

Before you are born is too early. If you manage to code your first application as a infant, then great.

Learn git and get on github or something. And get irc, ask devs what you can do

My course used 'An introduction to OOP with Java by C. Thomas Wu (ISBN978-0-07-12868-7) and I also recently acquired @Effective Java 2nd Ed by Joshua Bloch@ but I haven't started reading that one just yet as I also have Code Complete. Both decent books though from what I've heard/experienced.

To add to it, if you can, go ahead and join your local chapter of code for America or whatever your third world shithole has like it. People there are generally happy to have help, even if you dont have experience.
