http://potsandpansbyccg.com/2016/01/04/how-comcast-pays-for-bandwidth/?mc_cid=dcb98d91d4&mc_eid=eb527a594e

Comcast is careful to avoid claiming their caps are necessary to pay for heavier usage because there's simply no technical justification for that claim.
https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/3rnfnm/leak_of_comcast_documents_detailing_the_coming/

While Comcast wants to bill like a utility, it has vehemently opposed being regulated as such. As a result millions of people face steep broadband price hikes for usage via meters that aren't being confirmed accurate by a reliable third party. Imagine an electricity and gasoline industry where pumps and meters weren't regulated, then imagine the resulting inevitable fraud complaints being policed by Comcast's not-so-award winning customer service department.

Comcast leaked documents, its primary engineer and the industry's top lobbyists have even admitted caps have nothing to do with congestion, and aren't an effective tool to manage network load anyway.

The problem is the public that can't tell the difference between a gigabyte and gelatin.

At the end of the day Comcast's usage caps are about one thing: socking uncompetitive markets with higher prices, and protecting legacy TV revenues from Internet video. Every other excuse that's been proffered by ISPs (at least here in the States where bandwidth and transit costs are low) is total and utter nonsense.

>Ask to opt out, Rep says you can't, have 30 min argument with 3 people about what the word trial means.
>realize I'm gonna have to pay 30 bucks a month for the same service I have already, fuck
>Comcast gives you 3 overages before they start charging 10 bucks for every 50 gb over
>I use around 1800 gb a month in a house of 5 people
>use all 3 "courtesies" in Oct, Nov, dec.
>today, call to have unlimited because I have literally no other isp option.
>we can't put it on for January we have to wait until Feb.
>what about the overages? Well you can regulate yourself or we'll charge the 10 per 50 gb, or when you get to 300 you can unplug your modem.
>what? So you're forcing me to pay for the same service I already have, and then tell me you can't provide me with the service you're forcing on me?
>did quick math, 10 for 50 gb, 20 for 100,1800 minus 300 is 1500, 15 x 20 is 300.
>"So you want me to pay 300 dollars because Comcast can5 provide a service it's forcing on me.
>yes
>3 different people and 2 hours later I was "escalated to a senior rep who will call you back in 48 to 72 hours".

If they try and give me the run around I'm going to the store in person and cancelling my contract, taking the 110 a month I would be spending on them and getting an unlimited wireless plan on my cell and tethering. I would rather go through all that hassle than get fucked by Shit cast any more.

comcast isnt the only fucking cancer in the isp community.

I have fucking charter and it makes me want to burn their shit to the ground.

They oversold all the nodes around me so i get 5mbps download instead of the 60 im supposed to get, but the worst part is the ping is around 500ms to the same fucking town i live in from 4pm to 12am and ofcourse anywhere farther away is worse.

calling them doesnt do shit of course

No caps as far as i can tell though, usually run through 1000gigs or so in a month

I dropped comcast when they enabled the 250gb data cap in my city. I was paying like $80 a month for cable and 6mbps internet and using close to a tb of data a month.

Recently I switched to tmobile, got the $95/month unlimited high speed lte plan, pay $7/month for a VPN (private internet access), and $7/month for netflix. Everything totals to almost $120 with taxes and whatnot.

BUT, as least for now everything is super fucking cash. I connect my phone to a laptop with pdanet, enable the VPN on my phone, and turn my laptop into a hotspot. Average speeds around 8mbps and I used like 900gb of data last month.

I'm going to ve really salty when tmobile realizes I am a thieving nigger and forces me to go back to sucking cumcast's dick. Maybe I'll just give up internet for good at that point.

I don't know if you should do what I did. It's a risky tactic to avoid the shot stain that is comcast. I've been good for 3 months so far.

No there aren't, geographic monopolies restrict peoples ability to have choices when it comes to their internet, in a majority of locations in america you either have internet from one company or you don't have internet at all.

>apple
unlike the ISP's There are more than one phone provider and phones as a whole aren't limited by geographical monopolies at all, I can readily change between AT&T, verizon, or who ever at any time with no bearing on my location or anything. I have multiple choices.

You're comparing a service that is an integral part of hundreds of millions of peoples lives that is extremely difficult to go without in this day and age, where there is no competition in many areas to a phone service that isn't monopolized at all

I have an Idea for free internet
Say you have 2 computers connected to a LAN, but you aren't connected to the internet on either of them. You are still able to transfer files between the computers easily. Now, if you were connected by a wireless router, any computer within the range of the wireless signal will be able to transfer files between each other. Then you decide to use a signal booster to increase the range of your wireless network so that you'll be able to share files with everyone in your neighborhood.

This is where my idea comes in. Internet connections usually cost money to maintain, you have to spend more to get more bandwidth and plus they are slower than direct LAN/WLAN connections. What if you were to give out signal boosters to people all over the city, and go on for every square-mile until your LAN can be accessed by millions of people? Hell, with strong enough signal boosters it should be theoretically possible to spread it all across North America. Everyone would be able to share files/folders with everyone else, WITHOUT needing access to the internet. IP addresses can't even be used to track down because it's a network without internet access, your IP address would not be associated with any ISP.

Download speeds would be amazing, they would only be limited by the strength of the wireless signal, so in any urban area you'd never get speeds lower than 10MB/s. At first it would just be like a P2P program where you'd download files from other people's shared folders, but then websites would not cost anything to host because it's just a matter of putting your website in a shared folder and leaving your computer on.

Shit, everything about this sounds awesome. The only downside I could see of this is that being connected to the same network leaves everyone's computers wide open to hackers... who gives a fuck I want to try this. I wonder how much money it would cost to start out and get enough of a signal to cover a few blocks.

one thing to keep in mind to justify the cost of using unlimited wireless as an option is a part of the total price is also a phone service, which I assume you'd have anyways.
Granted, I have an old plan back before wireless carriers started assraping people and so my particular case doesn't apply to most.

I pay, now (after they raised the grandfathered plan price from $30 to $50), $130 a month after taxes, fees, and the insurance plan for Verizon unlimited 4G and phone service.
It's basically $50 a month for the phone service, and $50 a month for an unlimited data 30-40Mb ISP, plus 10 for the insurance.
Believe it or not the insurance is cost effective for a clumsy dipshit like me when I also get a considerably better phone every 2-3 years.

tl;dr good on you for giving the finger to landline ISPs

It all has to do with networking infrastructure. Say in your area the backhaul can support 1gb/s. You have 40 customers in the area, some have 50mbit plans others have 150 whatever, they're not all going to use it at once right? Let say 10 of those customers are heavy data users and together are tapping the connection. Throttling those people allows you to get more data out to other customers.

Is it ethical? Maybe not because they've clearly oversold in an area.
My theory is that it starts with quality control within the company. They want to make sure their employees are performing up to a certain standard so they implement a minimum signups/month rule. To keep your job you need 4 signups a month or something. Those who get the most signups are rewarded while those who don't get fired.
When it's home, food, and comfort on the line people don't give a shit if it's ethical to oversell in an area. The company, now realizing they don't have the infrastructure implement data caps as a way try even out how service is provided because they make the same amount of money off of you as they do from Aunt Beatrice who uses 10gb a month to check her email.

That's wrong though, they aren't throttling but instead limiting how much you can use a month. The real issue that all isp has is the peak congestion time which is around 6pm-12am when everyone is home at the same time and they are using the internet. Data caps do nothing at all to alleviate this so any justification for having caps is bullshit.

There's two kinds of cap. A soft cap and a hard cap. A soft one is where you hit your limit and then for the rest of the month your provider throttles you. The hard card is where they just cut you off.
If you think about it, both alleviate network traffic.

I'm glad I use my local ISP instead of AT&T or Comcast. My speeds may not be the best (6.5mbps), but their customer service is pretty good, and I don't have to fuck with caps. It may take me 9 hours to download a 30gb file, but they don't give me shit no matter how much data I use
>>
>>52261778
Soft caps are usually reserved for wireless plans though that claim to offer unlimited until a certain amount. Comcast is offering a hard cap and after that you have to pay more, they don't just cut you off.

As a sup and representative for a cable company (not cumcast) we don't give a fuck.

I say sup and representative because I take "sup calls " two hours a day. Where instead of answering " thank you for calling x , my name is john" I say " thank you for waiting on the line, this is john. Floor supervisor , how can I help you "

BTW my name is not john

I figured out why Comcast hasn't put a cap on my internet yet. It's because I have FiOS in my area.

It's fucking amazing what competition can do isn't it?

Too bad they're only giving me 12 mb/s when I pay for 25 mb/s and they won't fix it and want me to pay $70 an hour for some chucklefuck contractor to come out here and tell me nothing's wrong
>>
>>52262680

It's not in my area either but the only other option for me is ATT shit.

Currently with shitcast I have 75/5 (88/12 in real world) for $60/mo

ATT only offers 5/1 and it's around the same price.
>>
>>52260035
FUNNY how you just said what he said about an isp.....

Literally checkmated yourself for him
>>
>>52262680

I have both in my area. Switch to FiOS. It might cost a little more, but the service uptime is fucking amazing compared to cable and you can use your own router.

>>52260035

Comcast customer here

I can use my own router and modem...
>>
>>52262880

Yea. But you have to buy a modem.

FiOS comes over Ethernet. You can literally plug in any old router you have laying around.
>>
>>52262784
>and you can use your own router.
what the fuck is this bullshit? I have my own modem and router and I'm a TWC customer

I'm not paying the TWC jew $10 a month to borrow their shitty equipment
>>
>>52262910
and where does the ethernet cable come from?

Plus, a cable modem is $50, not a huge deal.
>>
>>52262950

The Optical Network Terminal, which is in my basement, converts the Fiber to a regular electrical signal.

The wire coming into my house is literally a Cat6 Ethernet cable that I can plug into anything.

FTTH installations don't have cable modems.
>>
>>52262978
>The Optical Network Terminal, which is in my basement, converts the Fiber to a regular electrical signal.
And how much does Verizon charge you for that device? It's just something replicating the functionality of a modem.
>>
>>52262978
Obviously it doesn't have a cable modem...its fiber.

Does Verizon not charge you monthly for the Optical Network Terminal?

0 dollars. It is part of their infrastructure. It is not the customers responsibility. It's typically located in your basement or the side of the house with your other utilities.

What state do you live in? FIOS got dumped in FL and TX and CA. I've been a pretty happy customer for almost 2 years now. I work from home and certain months blow through any cap if there is one (I have no real idea). My speeds are consistently in the 60-80 range and 20-50 up. But soon that's all going to shit when Frontier takes over. Holy fuck, I'd kill to be with Comcast, that's how fucking bad Frontier is.

Currently have 75/5 with shitcast for ~38/m. Ask for promotion rate. They will always have one. Use multiple point of entry (call customer service, online chat, local office). Get that shit reduced.
>>
>>52263046

There is no FiOS cap, though I heard they get mad if you do over 10TB for multiple months in a row.
>>
How are you niggers using so much bandwidth every month?
I'm not defending Comcast at all, but what the fuck are you 1TB+ guys doing? Do you torrent and seed multiple 4K films every day or some shit?
>>
>>52263102
Not the other shits, but I use about 600GB average just downloading videos/games/streaming.

I live with one other room mate, so he does bit too.
>>
>>52263102
I do 600GB/mo regularly and it's mostly from Netflix/Twitch.
>>
>>52263102

I run a plex server for my family and friends. Generally do anywhere from 5-8TB a month.

I dread the fucking day this cap bullshit comes here.
>>
>>52260478
in theory there's nothing wrong with this, as a business model, GIVEN that the savings are passed onto customers (impossibly cheap plan for that bandwidth) and data caps being reasonable.
if you needed to rely on the bandwidth at any time and without limits, you would have to pay much more (business line or something like that).

I'm tickled by the fact that their video streaming service is named Cox On Demand.

I love how Comcast has tripled my internet speeds over the last 2 years. This way I can hit that cap in less than a week.
>>
>>52264815

Out area only has Cox.

Their name is so fun.

"Yesterday I got the Cox."
>>
Protip: Not hitting your Comcast cap but wanna annoy Comcast? The Cap resets at the 1st of every month (not when your bill is due). So on the last 2 days find out what you have left and download like crazy and be sure to leave a little wiggle room just in case.
>>
>>52265043
Literally nobody is monitoring your caps you child. Its an automated system. You could be at 999999999999/1000000000000 and nobody would care.

why is america so much behind the rest of the world?
>>
>>52257009

Anon, if you were on contract with them, rather than simply paying them for month to month service, SUE THEM FOR BREACH OF CONTRACT!

>>52269522

Because the country is so goddamn big, and the people spread out across that country (instead of being clustered around the south only, as Canada is), that getting internet access to fucking everybody is prohibitively expensive. In most areas, only one or two ISPs actually serve the public.

Comcast needs to be stopped at all cost.

They are trying desperately to control the internet and force us into a strict walled off domain where we're price gouged and manipulated. This is why I hope to god Google spreads their fiber network at a faster pace. America needs competition in order to protect the internet. Society needs to focus on shutting them down.
>>
>>52269522
>why is america so much behind the rest of the world?

Because all superpowers come to an end. What you're witnessing is the slow collapse of a once great nation, as all good things come to an end. Capitalism ran it's course and it's proving that it no longer functions properly to sustain civilization, it's an old worn out engine that needs a complete redesign. So until that happens the old system must decay and it's already showing signs of that happening.

Part of the contract apparently was they can change the price based on availability and other "factors". I'm fucked.
