Smaller input jacks exist. The issue is that smaller than 3.5mm has a tendency to snap.
3.5mm is ubiquitous. It's a standard. There's no reason you'd need to go so thin with a device where 3.5mm becomes a limitation. If you're trying to replace 3.5mm, it needs to be with a different wired solution that does it better.

it's not the poor engineers, it's the sales and marketing teams cracking the whips, and the dumb consumers who are disproportionately impressed by thin phones.
thin phones actually are more comfortable to carry and more aesthetically pleasing to hold, but the average person doesn't think about the battery life tradeoff while holding one in the store.
the big problem is that Android is still a huge energy pig and that Apple wants to accentuate trivial advantages their engineering team can achieve (ok battery in thinnest possible case) over the Android vendors who are forced to chase after them to seem not as shit.
also, manufacturers wants your battery life to be shit in ~2 years so they can get another reason for people to upgrade.
