Be honest with me /g/. How badly did I screw up? Just upgraded from a 7850 to this 970
>>
you probably have aids now
>>
>>52243549

Meh. It's OK. The 7850 has been the performance for dollar king for basically forever now, but in terms of performance per watt it's been surpassed long ago.
>>
>>52243549
>970
Oh dear. I hope you paid no more than $250 for it, at least.
>>
>>52243549
I went from a 6950 to a 970. Twas' quite the worthwhile investment for me personally.
>>
You didn't screw up at all. its a great card. you have already bought it. just enjoy it and don't let people on /g/ nitpick it.
>>
>>52243549
I'm upset you placed it on the static wrapping.

Is this post purchase rationalization?
>>
>>52243634
No, I actually love my 970
>>
>>52243664
Do you love your wife's mulatto son too?
>>
>>52243664
>Anon gazed up at the enormous Nvidia logo. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark claims of 4GB of RAM. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two house-fire-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved his 970.
>>
>>52243549
did you already sell the 7850? what brand was it? maybe i can buy it off you?

Is the 3.5 meme still a thing or was it fixed ?
>>
>>52243811
It was never fixed, and more and more games are starting to surpass 3.5 GB VRAM at 1080p too (Just Cause 3 being one of those games)
>>
>>52243811
It's been quietly swept under the rug.
>>
>>52243701
I literally installed it like 2 hours ago. I have no use for the 7850 to be honest.
>>52243585
lol I actually paid 250 for it brand new because of that jet web site. seemed like a pretty stellar deal.
>>52243568
Well I was looking for a decent card to upgrade to because I didnt want to shell out 500+ for a gpu. I still cant fathom spending that much for one at the moment
>>
>>52243701
Oh I forgot to mention that the 7850 is a sapphire and the 2gb OC one
>>
>>52243918
>lol I actually paid 250 for it brand new because of that jet web site. seemed like a pretty stellar deal.
For $250 it is actually a really good deal. Good job.
>>
/g/ my r9 270x randomly died like a week ago.

I'm poor and bought a second hand one for $130, selling the old card for parts on ebay.

did i make a mistake.
>>
>got my 970 for $280 with backplate and game
>can resell it for $250 when new GPU's come out

Best investment.
>>
>>52244059
why didn't you use the warranty
>>
>>52244114
spoiler
i could not for the life of me find the serial number sticker on the pcb, dont have the original box, newegg never got back to my about a purchase from 2 years ago.

asus wouldnt even let me send it in and pay for repair without a serial.
>>
I upgraded from a 7950 to a GTX 970 one year ago and it was well worth it, almost twice performance upgrade.

I have yet to encounter any problem with the 3.5 memebytes and I always play with MSI Afterburner OSD to monitor frametimes and temperatures.

god damn it

this card is idling at like 46 degrees
i could have sworn for the life of me my old one was in like mid 30's
>>
>>52244133
duh you register it when you acquire it. the serial sticker is on the box, and on the back of the pcb (under backplate if it has one)
>>
>>52244174
I know where its supposed to be located, my problem was it that it wasnt where it was supposed to be. i have no idea if the adhesive wore off and fell off somewhere in another case.
>>
>>52244162
Does afterburner have an fps limiter? I've been using mine through nvidia inspector to keep coil whine away just incase.
>>
>>52244204
damn tough luck. it probably showed up in device manager properties tho and could have saved it. I think the sticker removal voids warranty anyway, they really should laser engrave that shit.
>>
>>52244227

I couldnt post with the card though, which was the biggest problem. I tried everything except putting it in the oven because i just wanted to take my losses and move on.

thanks for not being a huge jerk like everyone on /g/ is. I left here for a reason but came to ask about the card.

how do you feel about my idle temps? should i return it, get my money back and get a new card?
>>
Ahh I remember my 7850. Was an MSI twin frzr. Bought it for $80 when it first came out. Was open box at microcenter. The first owner returned it because of not liking the color scheme. The 2nd guy claimed he was wary of it being used, so he "took the heatsink off, wiped away all the grey gunk, put it all back together and now it runs hot".

3rd guy returned it for same reason. I bought it and a tube of ICdiamond thermal paste. Wiped it down good, repasted, and after making sure it ran good, overclocked the living fuck out of that card. Was running 1250mhz at 1.3v . Gave it to my buddy when I got twin gtx 670s. He used it and abused it just as I did. The card refused to die. One of the fans had its bearings seize and that was it. Still on my friend's shelf. RIP you magnificent beast.
>>
>>52244255

my 970 ACX 2.0 idles at 38C without fans spinning, idk what the 270X idles at you should look up reviews/benches. maybe it just needs thermal paste which can indeed make up 5-8 degrees in cooling.
>>
>>52244208
>>52244208
Yeah, you can force it with the RivaTuner Statistics Server software that comes bundled with MSI Afterburner, apparently this one is better than the build in, in the Nvidia driver that Nvidia Inspector uses.

Honestly there there is too much tearing in my monitor using a framelimiter, I prefer to use Adaptive Vsync.

inb4 some retarded crying but muh vsync input lag, as if you are fast enough to react to a 2ms difference.
>>
>>52244255
Not him but idle temps are a worthless measure unless it is overheating like mid 50s or something. Is the card hitting 85C+ under load? Then yes. Return it or repaste it yourself. Otherwise leave it alone.
>>
>>52244344
Really that's all? My r9 390 (PowerPoint PCS+) idles at 40C with cans off in a no airflow fractal R5. I figured the 970 would run cooler than that.
>>
>>52244345
Nvidia inspectoe global profile setting s resets to default every fucking time I restart the OS. I heard about riva tuner I should try that, I just don't want all these different applicarions conflicting and messing something up.
>>
>>52244383
my case only has one 120mm intake fan, mATX Z97 and 4690K with 212 EVO <1 inch above the card. all the silent fan 970's are going to idle about the same. it goes from 35-38 while just browsing internet.
>>
i upgraded to a 7850 like 6 months ago
>>
>>52244363
playing mgs V and I'm at like 64 tops.

thanks for the feedback anon, but what do you think about the purchase in general? whats the current 1080p gaming card that i could get for around 150?

I bought a 970 awhile back and I'm starting to regret it.

Is it normal to have frametime spikes like this?

Yes it is fixed. NVidia rolled out a new driver which removes the 3.5 GB from your card and replaces it with brand new 4GB ultrafast ultrabit ultradurable ultrasonic ultratough GDDR6 memory.
Now go and fuckin' kill yourself.

dont worry, it only means 1-5 fps less every 10-30 seconds
>>

its not "OMG FPS ARE 10 ITS UNPLAYABLE" bad at all

your fps will be shit from the sole fact that the GPU itself cant handle whatever resolition youre trying to, and not the slower part of the ram

$250 for 5% performance boost? Worth?
