How does a computer science degree translate to the real world when it comes to programming for a living?
>>
The degree isn't what gets you a job OP it's what you learn. If you fully utilize your universities resources and become a decent programmer, you'll get a job. If you just coast through your coursework, you'll probably have a hard time.
>>
It makes getting job interviews much easier!

Just make sure you do your own projects while in school.
>>
Is it too late to sign up for summer internships?

No, I'm still in the process now.

Unless you actually take the time to study and learn programming:

Poorly.

A quick Google search will bring you dozens of articles, blog posts, white papers, etc about how employers interview recent CS grads that can't do things like Fizz Buzz, or who can't whiteboard even basic programming concepts.

CS is not a programming degree. It is not a software engineering or software development degree.

It is a degree in the mathematics of computation.

This trend of workplace unprepared CS grads has led to the rise of more programming oriented degree programs like Software Engineering (SE) or Computing and Information Systems (CIS).

You'll do fine in the workplace with a CS degree if you take the time to apply what you've learned to programming; but you need to consider that you sacrifice more practical course material in order to take some of the more advanced mathematics courses in a CS degree.

Why would someone who wants to be a programmer do a CS programme rather than an SE programme?

Humblebrag here, got an internship for my post-freshman year summer at 17! It's one of the top tech companies in its field. Super psyched and very thankful.

This desu.

What else would they do?

>coding camps
>SE degree
CS is a theoretical degree about models of computing and algorithm analysis
Not learning to churn out Java code for your boss
>>
>>52244845
flipping burgers most of the time
>>

This pretty much, you code will take longer to write and run a little bit more efficiently.

well, if you understand the stuff, and start seeing the world from that perspective it tells you why most code is utter shit.

it also tells you how to create code that is not shit.

if you want to be one who doesn't think, and just puts together code, then goes home and feels good about himself (dat dere blissful ignorance) then you need to go to a trade school to learn how to program.

if you want to be above programmers, and actually contribute to the advancement of computational science, then join us in academia but be forewarned: it is extremely difficult to tell programmers (aka normies) how incorrect their thinking is and that they could do better if they just do a few simple things before writing code.
