I went into the local store today to see if they were selling things cheap. Didn't have anything interesting.
>>
>>52241932
Did they have anything goin cheap tho?
>>
>>52241947
not a chance, full price games, cables 40 each, shitty jvc tvs

Not really /g/ related but an interesting read non the less.

>>
>>52241947
I was hoping so, but nope. Maybe if you asked for a discount.
Might get cheaper as time goes on though.
>>
>>52241932
They cleared the cheap shit weeks ago when their stocks collapsed.

Saw a fair few PS4/XB1 games for 20 and ALL PS3 games were 10 no matter how new.
>>
Nobody cares.

Expensive morons who get destroyed by JBs and Jaycar in every single way.
>>
DSE died a LOOONG time ago. They used to be a general electric store with decent stock.
They're just overpriced bullshit consumer electronics now.
>>
I haven't shopped there in years but damn I used to a lot.

Unfortunately for them JB Hifi popularised and was just better in every way, not to mention immensely superior customer service.
>>
>>52242064
Dick Smith died the moment Dick Smith himself was no longer associated with it
>>
was surprised to hear old dick sold it way back in 1982
>>
>>52241998
Had a quick read but I'm not economist. Can someone tl;dr this in layman's terms?

My take away is someone bought Dickies for $10m and sold it for $520m.
>>
>>52241971
JVC are still around?

Did they ever do anything notable besides always giving away TVs on Australia's Funniest Home Videos?
>>
Wasn't Dick Smith owned by Woolworths until recently? What is it with them killing everything they touch, Big W is in the shitter too
>>
>>52242119
I'm pretty sure they manufacture the DSE branded shit. That's why the quality is so bad.
>>
>>52242144
My DSE tv was okay for the price really. JBs own brand is better though (Soniq)
>>
>>52242110
Buy company in a bullshit way so you essentially put $10mil into it, specifically while it's all stocked up
Dump all the stock it has with big sales so the profit sheet looks fucking superb
This attracts investors, and you sell all your stock off
Company is left with no stock and no ability to repeat the initial profit
You get delicious, delicious money while the other investors get to suck a fat dick
>>
>>52242174
Nah, the only cheap shit that's any good is Hisense.

This 40" I'm using right now is coming on 4 years old and is rock solid, albeit the remote is packing up.

8/10 would buy again
>>
>>52242064
This. Back in the day you could actually buy electronics kits components at DSE... And there was competition too, with Tandy.

Alas, no more.
>>
>>52242110

Bought for $10M, stripped of anything worth while then offloaded to clueless shareholders (i.e your super fund) for $520M.

Once people caught on that the gold nugget they had purchased was actually a highly polished turd they dump their holdings, share price collapses, banks won't lend to fund inventory and DSE winds up insolvent.

Good work if you can get it.

The fuck is dick smith? some kind of weird European store?

I will admit the quality of DS own brand TV's is pure shite but $50 is still a steal.

>>52242728
PB-tech for consumer + enthusiast computing
Jaycar for componentry (if you don't mind the premium cost)
>>
They've been shit for a while honestly.

But I'll always have a soft spot for them being one of the few large brick and mortar stores that sold high end smartphones unlocked for reasonable prices.
>>
>>52242825
Welcome to living in Aus/NZ. Everything is way fucking overpriced, especially electronics. Online is almost always the cheapest way to go.
>>
>>52242728
Jaycar is all that's left really.

>>52243172
Why are we still getting fucked so hard on HDD's?
>>
>>52243172

Yeah I've lived my whole life in NZ I understand it's all overpriced, but sometimes you have to buy things in brick and mortar stores due to time constraints or trust issues.
>>
>>52243198

Jaycar it is. Last time I brought an HDD was from dick smith with a discount thanks to knowing the cashier.. RIP Dick Smith
>>
>>52243237
I haven't seen HDD's in dick smith since 500GB drives first became a thing. I take it the guys that took it over are the reason it went full consumer electronics?

>>
>>52242834
They did a fire-sale about a month ago on a heap of stock to try and save the company/keep the share price high enough for a few days so all the directors could get out. Everything decent disappeared on the first day it was on sale. Employees where buying shitloads of stock for themselves to sell at a profit later.

Not that anyone really minded since they'll be out of a job soon.

I remember Dick Smith's back in the 80's (yes I am that old) when it was a proper electronics shop. A shop for people who actually wanted to think and create.

Time sure has changed.

Just bought a LG smart TV worth $1200 for $720 there including 2 years extra warranty from Dick Smith(which has gone down the drain now due to Dick Smith dying ).

Great TV with great quality picture for the price paid, sad to see this store go :(
>>
>>52243326
Haven't been to Dick Smith in years.
Last I went there, it was to pick up a 256MB flash drive and some LED multipacks, but they didn't have the latter anymore. Disgusting.
Jaycar is slowly turning into the same thing, but they always had more components in the first place, so it will take a lot longer.

JB Hifi is just a ripoff, don't even bother. Use pricespy for consumer shit and find that PBTech or Techworld are usually better bets.

So much this. About the only thing going for them was their selection of batteries.

Batteries!

And I know the real reason they died. My local DSE has a wall of ink cartridges.
No one buys ink cartridges.
