Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:
1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies), we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to Linux as your new home and working on making it feel the way you want it.

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.
Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.
Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

I don't know if this is the right thread to post this but I'm trying to install Ubuntu Server on an old Toshiba Satellite M45-S265 and won't boot from USB nor CD.

I remember that back in the day I could boot from USB using a boot manager included on Hiren's Boot CD but recently I haven't been able to boot from neither CD or USB.

Can I remove the HDD and use an external enclousure to install using another system? Any other ideas?
>>
>>52243601
Are you manually selecting a boot device, or just turning it on with the media inserted and hoping for a miracle?
>>
What's a compositor and do I need one?
>>
>>52243700
I'm selecting CD-LAN-FDD-HDD on BIOS.

But I'm also hitting F12 to access boot menu that consists on four icons: HDD, CD, Floppy and Network.
>>
>>52243727
If you're trying to boot from USB, check under HDD and see if it's listed there. Also, make sure you're making the bootable USB correctly.
>>
>>52243756
I can boot with the same flash drive on a different laptop.

I cannot find anything listed under HDD, there is no list.
>>
>>52243711
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compositing_window_manager

The compositor is the program that actually does the special things listed.

At its simplest, a compositor can be useful to get rid of flickering and screen tearing. But otherwise, it's mostly non-essential eyecandy.

If you're using a lightweight DE or just a WM and are experiencing screen tearing, Compton might be for you. Otherwise, your DE probably already has a compositor, or you just don't need/want a compositor.

I had posted last night that I was having an issue with Ubuntu Wily and gdm (it would boot into a black screen). I had said that I had to use a tty to change back to lightDM to fix it. I was going to just do a full reinstall even though it was working fine but apparently gdm and Wily do not get along and this is a known issue.

They'll conflict sometimes, it's a waste of disk space unless you're actually autistic enough to be hopping between them all the time, waste of time spent installing them, waste of resources.

Find a Desktop Environment that you like and stick with it. I suggest LXDE or MATE.
>>
>>52244058
I'm not quite sure what all the terminology here means (I'm retarded), but it's fully installed on my thinkPad and seems to be working with lightDM. I haven't noticed any problems since switching back - it's just if I change it back to gdm I boot to a hanging fsck and have to tty and dpkg-gdm configure or whatever

-On Windows, I would have just replaced the file with the new file.

it will probably load wads from multiple places, one in /usr is often there as a system-wide option for package to use (say you install a doom wad as a package, youd want it in /usr), plus a user-specific location, like ~/.config/

How much of a placebo are all these hardenings and SELinuxes are? Not in terms of them being useless, but just having no use?
I'm not being attacked 24/7, I'm careful about what's happening on my computer, but I am security and privacy conscious. Should I go through all the asspain of all these security measures for (as I see it) next-to-zero benefit?
>>
>>52245099
They'll defend against active attacks, as well as the mass government surveillance that is going on.

You're naive if you think nobody's trying to harvest information from you. Being security and privacy conscious is an excellent thing, and these addons are an extension of that goodness.

Grsecurity wasn't that hard to install in Gentoo (hardened sources) and theoretically shouldn't be that hard to install to any distro, so long as you know how to configure and compile a kernel. It's just applying a patch.

https://grsecurity.net/

They say it better than me. Keep fighting the good fight, friend.
>>
>>52245099
Selinux comes prepackaged in at least Fedora and its derivatives, and I assume other distributions. It's solid for what it does, but it doesn't cover all the bases. Grsecurity fixes what Selinux doesn't.

Hahaha. Linux users are obsessed with security because they're generally savvy enough to know what they're up against and how to counter it.
>>
>>52245422
Fuckin' A, man. Even when you install it from sources you still have to configure and recompile, though.

make menuconfig
make && make modules_install
make install

Security Options -> Grsecurity

Enabling "harden module autoloading" means you have to manually set a module to load at boot as root if you want to use it as a user; this means whatever module is used to mount USB sticks and the like.

Enabling "runtime read-only" (paraphrase) makes your system write-protected.

Those are the only two I would absolutely say to not enable. Everything else read the help pages for (select option and press h)
>>
>>52245487
what are they up against then?

I asked this last thread and didn't get much...

I've got a currently blank external 1TB drive (shitty Seagate, but USB 3.0), with it I want to the following:
1) Backup all my current files to it (the shit currently on the windows machine).
2) Encrypt the drive.
3) Install Mint onto it, configured somehow to be able to boot on pretty much any computer I want (I plan to carry the drive with me most of the time).

What I'm asking is the following:
1) Any tips?
2) Is there any order that I must do the above steps in?
>>
>>52245545
NSA mass surveillance.
Corporate mass surveillance.

You know that botnet meme that gets thrown around here? That's not just a meme. Information harvesting is a very real, omnipresent threat. Whether you've done anything wrong or not, it's fucked up that they're spying on us 24/7.

Look at the scandal with Google sneaking microphone spyware into Chromium, their open-source browser. Corporations and Governments want our information and will find sneakier and sneakier ways to get it. Grsecurity, Selinux, browser addons, and common sense and wariness are all tools in the fight against constant infringement on our constitutional right to privacy.
>>
>>52245567
Well, you must first encrypt the drive. You can't encrypt the drive that has data on it (you actually can, but it's a fucking pain in the ass, don't ever do it).
>>
>>52245587
Ah fair enough, thought it might be referring to the 'botnet meme'. Personally not that concerned, interesting nonetheless

I moved my Windows 10 install to an SSD yesterday and today I'll install Arch through the Architect Installer on the remaining 1TB HDD. I saw some videos, but a couple of questions remain:
-Will Grub detect Windows 10 if it's on another drive?
-Will auto partition create a 1TB partition? I wanted to keep / in a 30 or 20GB partition and use the rest as an NTFS shared container. This isn't a huge deal because I can resize it later, but still.

I'm not that anon, but the text in the "linux support.png" is absolute trash.
1) Horrendous font

Hi. Lurker here running dual boot Ubuntu 14.04 server on my headless Mac 1.1 through SSH and VNC.

I'm kind of a purist, and was wondering if I should bother copying the .config files (i.e. making .default versions) for things like SSH or nginx before I edit them so that I can refer to them or revert later on.

I also would like to know what you guys the best way to run multiple processes at once is. Currently I'm using xfce4 desktop :1 with a couple of terminal windows open. I'd like to have teamspeak, a teamspeak music bot, game servers, file host (already running with Samba), and nginx/php/sql (which will just run in the background anyway). Any ideas?

init scripts.
Even if you don't desire for them to start during boot, you can always start them up manually from the command line.

If you were running ubuntu 15 it would be writing simple systemd units, but ubuntu 14.04 still suffers from upstart, so dunno.

The original statement was:

Which is pretty much the quickest way to paste in cmd, unless you have autohotkey doing some shit for you.

It's not a 4-key simultaneous shortcut btw.
alt+space opens the same menu you get from right clicking the top window bar.

It's really not a shortcut.
