waterproof and water resistant are two totally different things. Even devices that claim to be "100% waterproof" like that sony phone will break if you're dumb enough to go swimming with it. It's just a lot more capable of getting splashed by rain or a little spill than a non-water-resistant phone would be.

I think there is a rating scale for how water resistant a device actually is

I browse 4chan in the bath on my s5 mini, And it's more than happy to be submerged.

They might do it for resale, I've heard there is a large market for refurbished phones. They don't say its water proof cause they don't want people deliberately putting there phones in water. Just my thoughts though.
