If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Reposting question from the last thread.
I have about 250€ for a Thinkpad, is there any reason to get an X series over something like the T420? Size and weight are non-issues for me.
>>
Damn, what happened here?
>>
>>52232344
Does the t460p have optical drive? Do any of the t series even have 1366x768 as an option still?
>>
I am really unsure what to make of the new *60 series…

On the one hand, lenovo made a lot of good decisions (not trying to reinvent the trackpoint buttons again or a new keyboard again, built quality is supposedly quite good again, after the *20/*30 crap, focus on portability and battery life, modularity is back, seemingly much improved screens, even a fuckin OLED one and a glorious 3:2) but also a lot of bad ones (the keyboard is still shit, compared to the old non-chinkpads, they look like generic consumer laptops and the built quality is certainly not as good as it was, with their focus on thinness, they also removed quite a few useful features, the modules for the X1 tablet are probably a one time experiment and the screens are still all 16:9 crap except for one, making everything smaller than 14" unusable for anything besides watching movies).

I really need a new machine, and I was almost willing to spend around 2000€ for a new and improved X1 or T460s with a 3:2 13" screen, but i certainly aint paying more than 100€ for fuckin 16:9.

So what am I going to do? I currently have an 16:10 X200, and that screen is already quite the step down, compared to the X60, and the X220 and newer is simply unacceptable. T420 to 430(u/s) have too large bezels, but seemingly the T440s is OK, apart form the borked trackpoint buttons. Can you swap in an ultranav from the *50 series? Or just cover trackpad in some insulating tape, to at least stop the curser from moving when switching buttons with my thumb?

T450s seems quite good too, as is the current X1, but they are still too expensive. What kind of price drop can I expect in February, when the new series becomes available?
>>
>>52232386
No idea.

>>52232387
Nope, optical drives are all dead in the new machines.

Saying that, you can still fit 2 drives in. (PCIe SSD + 2.5" bay)

Reddit has all of the spec sheets:
https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/3zd6bn/spec_sheets_for_x1_carbon_x1_yoga_t460s_and_more/

T460p only comes with 1080p & 1440p IPS!

It's been relatively constant since the T400. Nowhere near as good as the old T60/61 days though.

Well if it's any consolation 1440p IPS is an option on the T460s.

16:10 IPS might be too difficult to source (X201s with 1440x900 panel was constantly hard to find because the panel had sourcing issues), 16:9 IPS is quite common.

>Come on.
Feel free to call me a faggot, but I care about the looks of thins I look at daily. Sadly, 90% of all laptops look like shit. There are worse offenders than the new thinkpads, but I really loved the asymmetric, boxy, form follows function, rubbery black stealth look of the old ones. The new ones are just slim hunks of plastic without any character of their own, just like all the acer crap at best buy.

>It's been relatively constant since the T400. Nowhere near as good as the old T60/61 days though.
From the few I had in my hands, the *20 and *30 series where shit, but maybe I got some duds? but the X1 carbon (if one ignores the fact that they totally and absolutely fucked up the keyboard in the first one) and the T450s I played around with last month, felt as good as my X61 (if I ignore the still way to huge bezels and the missing clamshell), so I have high hopes for the *60 series.

What is supposed to be functional about a "laptop" that will burn my lap down to black carbon in the 10 minutes it will run before the battery is empty?

Its the whole package…

What's the cheapest quad core thinkpad/comparable brand laptop I could get? Portability is fairly important to me, battery life not so much.

Basically, I need something that I will largely be using for coding on-the-go (and banal stuff like emails), but has the capability of running simulations of 4-cores, without overheating, for ~1 week periods when I need it to.

Looking at the buyers guide, it seems there aren't any x-series with 4 cores, do any other brands offer something of that size with a quad core?
>>
>>52232759
I should add, ideally I'd want something that has a similar performance to a stock clocked i5-2500, but in a laptop. Discrete graphics etc. are not relevant (although I always like something that can play civ).

>>
>>52232783
I don't mind if it causes a house fire (or a hotel fire, as would be the case), I just need it not to throttle.

How big do you think I'd have to go? I'm sick and tired of 17" laptops.

As much as I don't like suggesting mobile workstations (I use one daily, not nice to carry about), they are the only kind of laptops really designed to take that kind of punishment. Look for the Dell Precisions if you want the absolute best cooling.

You might strike it lucky with a 15" T series though (or equivalent from Dell/HP).
>>
>>52232862
Right, I'll have a look at those then. I used to use mobile workstations with discrete GPUs (CUDA/OpenCL stuff), not only were they horribly heavy, every single one died 2+ times within warranty.

Alright, so I just got this Thinkpad Yoga 14 in the mail...

>8.1 pre-installed
>i5-5200U
>8GB RAM
>1TB HDD + 16GB m.2 SSD
>GeForce 940M
>1920x1080

So, the keyboard is terrible. The space bar is probably the least tactile button I've ever pressed in my entire life. There is no CAPS LED, yet there is a microphone LED, which doesn't make sense. It's all very plastic-y feeling and bends very easily
. The keys are flat and not anti-microbial There is light-bleed fucking all over the screen. The buttons that they put back on the trackpoint are fucking just zero-tactile, flat garbage. The trackpad is huge and gets in the way of everything and should be turned off when you get it. Overall, it's a piece of shit, and the touch screen with the stupid YOGA shit is just 100% a gimmick with no actual use, only used because it costs them pennies.

Is the T450 like this? If so, I don't even want to bother with Thinkpads anymore. My R61 I guess is just part of that old build that won't be touched anymore.

Fuck Lenovo, I'm not buying from them any longer, and if you faggots are actually going to attack my post and defend this garbage, this fucking disgrace to what ThinkPad used to be, then go fuck yourselves. I'm not even going to bother holding my breath for these faggots at Lenovo anymore with the Retro. Fuck these asinine fuck-ups. You already had a good product that people were buying every year. what fucking idiots. This abomination is for nobody, no casual users will buy a fucking thinkpad, and no professionals will buy this because the keyboard is fucking garbage, the build is consumer trash, and the design is just fucking STUPID. Holy shit, a fucking CB3 chromebook has a better keyboard than this.

Has anyone tried replacing the "normal" screen on a x220 with an IPS panel?

Do the IPS panels usually come with a webcam/mic?

Does the IPS panel webcam/mic work as expected, especially under GNU/Linux?

Thanks to anyone who can answer at least one of these questions.
>>
>>52234461
It's not consumer bullshit. It's a fucking thinkpad. It has a trackpoint. No consumer is using a fucking trackpoint for anything and would never buy this. They buy a MBA or a chromebook.
>>
>>52234833
The IPS screen should be an easy upgrade, they are compatible so no mess involved.

>Do the IPS panels usually come with a webcam/mic?

I think it's part of the case as a model without a webcam will not have the appropriate cuts in the front bezel
>>
>>52234834
But that's exactly what Yoga and the other low-end "Thinkpads" are, anon. Consumer bullshit.
Just because they get the Thinkpad brand slapped onto them and have an all black case doesn't make them proper Thinkpads. They're consumer bullshit in business clothing.

A number of features distinguish modern logic from the old Aristotelian or traditional logic, the most important of which are as follows:[85] Modern logic is fundamentally a calculus whose rules of operation are determined only by the shape and not by the meaning of the symbols it employs, as in mathematics. Many logicians were impressed by the "success" of mathematics, in that there had been no prolonged dispute about any truly mathematical result. C.S. Peirce noted[86] that even though a mistake in the evaluation of a definite integral by Laplace led to an error concerning the moon's orbit that persisted for nearly 50 years, the mistake, once spotted, was corrected without any serious dispute. Peirce contrasted this with the disputation and uncertainty surrounding traditional logic, and especially reasoning in metaphysics. He argued that a truly "exact" logic would depend upon mathematical, i.e., "diagrammatic" or "iconic" thought. "Those who follow such methods will ... escape all error except such as will be speedily corrected after it is once suspected". Modern logic is also "constructive" rather than "abstractive"; i.e., rather than abstracting and formalising theorems derived from ordinary language (or from psychological intuitions about validity), it constructs theorems by formal methods, then looks for an interpretation in ordinary language. It is entirely symbolic, meaning that even the logical constants (which the medieval logicians called "syncategoremata") and the categoric terms are expressed in symbols.

you can pretty routinely find x220/T420's with BIOS passwords for like $100 because they're listed as faulty or for parts
removing the password takes literally 2 minutes

another fault to look for is "doesn't turn on," since that usually just needs a BIOS reset (take out the CMOS battery, wait 5 minutes)

The ThinkPad method is not the same as other computers. You can't just remove the CMOS battery or switch a jumper. Look online for some guides because you need to short some pins out while booting it to get in then change the settings.

I have a problem with my T410. It shuts down for no reason only when I play games. I tried to play Civ 4, Trine and Torchlight 2 and it shuts down after some time. Runs usually at around 50c.
60 if I want to use it under the covers in tablet mode for maximum comfy anime watching,
It should be fine for up to 100c according to the specs.

I'm always impressed by the cheap prices that you pay for your Thinkpads. Where can I buy them cheaply in Europe, specifically Germany? They seem more expensive in Europe, in general.

Ebay auctions. Germany has plenty of used Thinkpads for sale there. Be sure to read descriptions so you don't buy a smashed one or having cracked parts. Check older listings to see how much a particular model usually sells for.

2017 likely. They'll want to release it for the 25th thinkpad anniversary.

I want a Laptop that is powerful enough to be a multimedia machine for HD streams and able to play games that are already a few years old, like Warcraft 3.

Weight is unimportant for me and my budget is €500. What Thinkpad would you recommend me?
