i got a phone for christmas and I had the same opinion as OP, I thought my old phone was fine since I could call someone, listen to music and use it to tether a net connection for the laptop when travelling, that was all I needed I thought, and super modern smartphones were basically just a fad for normies allowing them to check facebook more often.

I do feel like their is a great deal of isolation and alienation that is being exacerbated by social media. There is also the whole aspect of feeling pressure to keep up appearances and the 'hey-everyone-look-at-me' mindset. However, the thing I am most disturbed by is the technological ignorance that the social media crowd has.
Before, understanding technology meant you knew how something worked well enough to teach someone else. Now, it seems to mean that you are familiar with Facebook's newest layout.
Few people can tell you anything about the things they use, not just smart phones and tablets, but anything at all it comes to technology. They don't think about where it comes from, what it took to make it, or even what the full range of capabilities it has. Fuck, I remember when I was much younger and I loved the idea of a computer I could carry around in my pocket and looking at those older handheld computers that ran DOS on ebay (though never buying one because I had almost no money at the time). Then smartphones came out and I finally got one in 2013 and found them to be shit in every way, from the bloated OS to the shitty browser to the shitty games. Recently I did an experiment, I loaded up Puppy Linux in a VM with half of one core from my old ass 2.2 Ghz quad core AMD Phenom processor and 512 MB of RAM, put Firefox on it, and put all the addons that I normally use in it and the thing ran much smoother than my smart phone with 1 GB of RAM and a processor comparable to half a core of the processor in my desktop even when comparing a few tabs of threads on 4chan on my phone to a few times as many tabs from more demanding websites on the VM.
