Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

So I think I may have done something wrong

First Arch install, marked out 4 partitions (boot, root, swap, /home), but when I launched the OS, it looks like everything was installed on the root partition. Is there any way to move things smoothly now that the OS is installed?

Best option is to use compton because it doesn't suck. Compiz and mutter are pretty bloaty.

It's been ages since I tried compiz with MATE but I remember a ton of stuff (especially keyboard shortcuts) didn't work. I'll look into mutter, though, because I remember compiz doing something similar at one point and I fixed it (window bars not appearing).

(I am the guy who posted >>52229598 )
Yeah, I used to hang out on desktop threads and post that pic, months ago. People hated my guts when I said that ricing was pointless and just cripples productivity.

(I keep the terminal around because it's great when I need to test ncurses programs, which I write a lot of. That amber monochrome screen recently died, but I found a green monochrome one online, and plan to try fixing the amber one in my spare time. If that fails and I decide I like amber more, I'll try swapping the tubes.

>IBM monitor
>not noticing the box underneath it or the separate keyboard that's attached to it

That's a physical terminal. Not a X terminal like the young'ns use nowadays, but a real honest-to-god RS-232 terminal. Back in the days of time sharing computer systems, this is how people accessed a central computer simultaneously and ran programs - via a network of terminals.

It's connected via the serial port of the PC, because the terminal does not have any way to install software on it. The PC sends characters and ASCII escape sequences to it and manipulates the terminal into displaying whatever I tell it to. Great for old text-based games like Zork and early dungeon-crawlers like Rogue, as well as testing CLI application performance (you can set the speed that messages are sent to the terminal at - text can enter at anywhere from 1200 baud (bits per second) to 19200 baud. I discovered a bug in the nano text editor recently when I was using this terminal, where the cursor moved slowly enough that I could watch the entire screen being redrawn whenever I typed a letter. Also, it's useful if my graphics card fails because my CPU doesn't have integrated graphics, and I can still boot and log in using the terminal interface this way.
All modern terminal programs emulate something like this (usually the terminal emulated uses a modified DEC VT100 protocol though).
Pictured: the PCB inside the terminal.

Nothing wrong with that, a lot of what I know comes from ancient books. Great fun.

My C book predates C89 (ANSI C) - it's basically an alternative to K&R's book.

I want K&R, but got this free so whatever. It's still a great guide and the author was also a bell labs employee.

xrandr.

I am not certain on hue, but I know you can set gamma points for red/green/blue separately.

where DEVICE is listed as output from xrandr with no arguments,
xrandr --output <DEVICE> --brightness 1.1
would give you 110% brightness, for example. a DEVICE example is LVDS1 on my intel graphics laptop, or DVI-I-0 on my desktop with an nvidia card.

For gamma:
xrandr --output <DEVICE> --gamma <rGamma>:<gGamma>:<bGamma>

example that sets gamma for all three channels to 90% and sets brightness to 110%:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --brightness 1.1 --gamma 0.9:0.9:0.9

I'll look more into hue.

Is this the kind of hue shift you wanted? This should be a "blue hue shift":

Yeah, day without fucked dependencies is a wasted day innit.

back in the days of yum, you could argue whether apt or yum is better - yum was dogshit slow which made everything aggravating.

But the speed problem was fixed in dnf, so dnf is a clear winner now.

Safer, more reliable, doesn't fuck up your dependencies, very extensible (copr, system-upgrade).
Also dpkg doesn't use specfiles like rpm, so it belongs to the trash immediately.

daily reminder that apt was the last package manager to introduce package signing - lmao

There are occasionally fucked dependencies. I've had it happen once only, when the MATE desktop required systemd due to polkit due to the MATE weather applet. When that happened, I made an empty .deb that 'provided' polkit. Problem solved.

You know what I do? I keep an installer from nvidia in /usr/src, and whenever I upgrade my kernel I go to a teletype (or sometimes use my RS232 terminal because it's COOL), cd to /usr/src, and run the installer. It makes a build for the new kernel and problem solved.

Sometimes the kernel was built on an older version of GCC than the current default, in which case doing, for example:
CC=gcc-4.9 CXX=g++-4.9 ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-xxx.xx.run

fixes it.

Alternately, one could always learn to use DKMS.

Arch is essentially a stripped-down version of any normal Linux distro. Call it hard if you want, but all you're doing is setting things up yourself and with the terminal as your main point of usage.

Gentoo is similar to Arch, except you build everything and it takes centuries. As I recently learned, the whole point of "lel install gentoo" is that it's time-consuming for very little benefit. You don't even really learn about the system more-so than Arch -- you're just building everything.

Not any of those 3, but women and men should be treated the same way. If women can't go topless in public then men shouldn't be able to either.
(I'd hope for the reverse, of course. I like boobs. But women like men's chests too, I've been told, and we're allowed to expose our breasts in public. Just looked this up - In the state I live in (Indiana), it's considered illegal (which is something we share with only the rednecks/hicks in Tennessee and the god-damn Mormons in Utah.

Anyway, women deserve the same rights as me. A lot of that may be because I like boobs, but I don't expect them to actually do it around me. I only think they should know they have the RIGHT to, even if they don't actually act on it. As a man, I don't go shirtless ever, because even I'm a bit self-conscious about my body.

Not an english major and while apparently I'm good at writing I hate to do it. So that's all I'm gonna say for now.

Also, a side note: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statutory_rape#Female_and_male_statutory_rape

There's also examples, such as that high school teacher that had sex with her student and got off with probation.

What's the best Ubuntu flavor and which has least bloat

Also why is unity so fucking weird?

I keep getting frustrated trying to set up arch and I tried to use Ubuntu but apt-get a shit and I felt like I didn't have enough control AMD there was too much bullshit to remove.

I like arch but I feel like I'm drowning just trying to get sound to work on it. Why is pacman so gr8

What distro to use ;-;

Arch Linux.

It's a badass lightning spiky 'A'. And it makes an archway, meaning you are following the Arch Way.

Honestly If I were to pick one distro for it's logo it would be centos.

Absolulely fucking goat.
Easy to draw, easy to construct,
based on 2 set of 4 squares, one rotated 45 degrees
4 colours.

Looks very professional and is very recognisable both in color and in monochrome.

The only better looking technology-related logo would be IBM (with horizontal stripes).

Wizards, where is a "About me" info file located in Xubuntu?
I deleted my name and since that moment About me is crashing every time I run it. I figured I changed it manually in a file rather than from GUI back to normal.

my recommendation is to burn the iso to a cd/dvd.
I've had problems booting any linux installation on my laptop from a USB drive since kernel version 4.0 became the standard. Probably because laptop is so fucking old.

However cd/dvd boots right off.
So just went to a shop and bought a spindle of dvds.

I was listening to the end-of-year "best of 2015" on some Leo Laporte podcast. One of the "best of" callers was a young woman who wanted to know what laptop to get to run Arch.

IIRC she was interning at NASA. Everyone on the podcast was having nerdgasms over her, but I found her annoying in that "I'll just mention that I'm a girl who is interested in these things, then wait for the gushing praise to roll in" way.

I imagined her looking like an eel.

I have been pondering this for some time.
Does anyone why most distros /download page does not include the dd / ddrescue line people have to run?
I mean, when ubuntu mate launched, they had a mirror link, and the ddrescue line ready, so anyone could try their distro.
Now their download page is a bit more bloated, but the initial idea was really great.

To me an ideal download page would include:
link to the .iso
installation guide
maybe a donation link
And if anything else, some cool news about what the user can look forward to as it is downloading.
And when more distro's target sd card based boards like rpi or beagle board, the installation guide is actually important if we want new users to be able to do it.
