making it feel the way you want it.

That's a physical terminal. Not a X terminal like the young'ns use nowadays, but a real honest-to-god RS-232 terminal. Back in the days of time sharing computer systems, this is how people accessed a central computer simultaneously and ran programs - via a network of terminals.
It's connected via the serial port of the PC, because the terminal does not have any way to install software on it. The PC sends characters and ASCII escape sequences to it and manipulates the terminal into displaying whatever I tell it to. Great for old text-based games like Zork and early dungeon-crawlers like Rogue, as well as testing CLI application performance (you can set the speed that messages are sent to the terminal at - text can enter at anywhere from 1200 baud (bits per second) to 19200 baud. I discovered a bug in the nano text editor recently when I was using this terminal, where the cursor moved slowly enough that I could watch the entire screen being redrawn whenever I typed a letter. Also, it's useful if my graphics card fails because my CPU doesn't have integrated graphics, and I can still boot and log in using the terminal interface this way.
All modern terminal programs emulate something like this (usually the terminal emulated uses a modified DEC VT100 protocol though).

I am not certain on hue, but I know you can set gamma points for red/green/blue separately.

back in the days of yum, you could argue whether apt or yum is better - yum was dogshit slow which made everything aggravating.
But the speed problem was fixed in dnf, so dnf is a clear winner now.

Also dpkg doesn't use specfiles like rpm, so it belongs to the trash immediately.

There are occasionally fucked dependencies. I've had it happen once only, when the MATE desktop required systemd due to polkit due to the MATE weather applet. When that happened, I made an empty .deb that 'provided' polkit. Problem solved.

You know what I do? I keep an installer from nvidia in /usr/src, and whenever I upgrade my kernel I go to a teletype (or sometimes use my RS232 terminal because it's COOL), cd to /usr/src, and run the installer. It makes a build for the new kernel and problem solved.
Sometimes the kernel was built on an older version of GCC than the current default, in which case doing, for example:CC=gcc-4.9 CXX=g++-4.9 ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-xxx.xx.run
fixes it.
Alternately, one could always learn to use DKMS.

Arch is essentially a stripped-down version of any normal Linux distro. Call it hard if you want, but all you're doing is setting things up yourself and with the terminal as your main point of usage.
Gentoo is similar to Arch, except you build everything and it takes centuries. As I recently learned, the whole point of "lel install gentoo" is that it's time-consuming for very little benefit. You don't even really learn about the system more-so than Arch -- you're just building everything.

I almost got it working, too - it worked except that apparently NVIDIA drivers disable themselves if they detect running on a passthrough unless you add some qemu arguments, and I'd already gotten fed up dealing with it.

I've had problems booting any linux installation on my laptop from a USB drive since kernel version 4.0 became the standard. Probably because laptop is so fucking old.
However cd/dvd boots right off.

Does anyone why most distros /download page does not include the dd / ddrescue line people have to run?
I mean, when ubuntu mate launched, they had a mirror link, and the ddrescue line ready, so anyone could try their distro.
Now their download page is a bit more bloated, but the initial idea was really great.
To me an ideal download page would include:
link to the .iso
installation guide
maybe a donation link
And if anything else, some cool news about what the user can look forward to as it is downloading.
And when more distro's target sd card based boards like rpi or beagle board, the installation guide is actually important if we want new users to be able to do it.
