N3700-ITX(L1).jpg
240 KB, 1200x1000
I want to build a silent pc for my parents, was thinking of ASRock N3700-itx with 8gb of ram and an ssd.
It has to run smoothly with an av, thunderbird, skype and viber in background, and a couple tabs in firefox. Doubt they'll throw much more at it. Is the pentium N3700 strong enough? I've got a nice i5 on my personal rig, so I have no idea what to expect performance-wise from a braswell pentium. All reviews I read told me nothing useful except that it easily cranks out 1080p playback.

tl;dr is N3700 enough for normies?
>>
pls respond
>>
>>52229749
Most probably yes, but dont expect god tier gayming performance
>>
>>52228880

It'll be fine.
Don't forget to grab an m2/mSata wifi
>>
It'd be fine just keep in mind it's basically just beefed up tablet hardware.
>>
>>52229862
Pretty sure they won't try to gaym :^)

>>52229891
M.2 would be overkill wouldn't it? I doubt the cpu can read over 500 MB/s or so.

>>52229952
Never had a tablet, I just hope it won't be a laggy mess. Maybe I should spring for an i3 build...
>>
>>52228880
>tl;dr is N3700 enough for normies?

Your building a niche super-quiet build for normies.

That's where you fucked up.
>>
>>52228880
>ASSrock
it'll do
>>
>>52230049
they kept good care of their last pc so I'm not too worried, just dont want to give them something too underpowered.

>>52229891
just now realize you were talking about m2 wifi, didn't even know those existed, but good old ethernet will suffice for now.

>>52230065
had their mobo a long time ago (10 years-ish) and it didnt shit out on me, hope this won't either
>>
>>52230136

normies like to hear their stuff run. That's how they know it works.
>>
>>52228880
just buy a nuc of your choosing and throw it into one of those heatsink cases.
>>
http://www.legitreviews.com/intel-nuc-nuc5pgyh-review-complete-mini-pc-windows-10_176543

Dunno if this helps you or not, OP but worth reading
>>
>>52230150
Should probably add some dank blue leds, for that boosted cooling effect :^)
I think it being silent will let them keep it on 24/7 and get more use out of it

>>52230174
>>52230194
I'll look into this, but the linked machine's ram and storage are too barebones for my taste. Ill try and see if beefier options exist and are shippable in a reasonable timeframe.
>>
Dual core Intel is more than enough for normies. 8gb Ram is still above the average and any type of SSD will compensate. A low end processor may not fully utilize an SSD but it will make sure that program loading is nearly instantaneous.

Just make sure its cooled well. I recommend if possible a dedicated low end low profile graphics card so the cpu doesn't strain during neweer website features using html5 and shit.
>>
>>52228880
Web browsing can be very CPU demanding nowadays.
Otherwise it shouldn't be a problem.

>>52230590
>Dual core Intel is more than enough for normies.
We're talking about a severely underpowered CPU here.
>>
>>52230590
Damn, really didn't want to stick a fan nor a dedicated gpu in this build. I'd rather go for an i3 then, skipping on the gpu should get the price difference pretty low, right?

>>52230647
What cpu would you go for (no dedicated gpu)?
>>
>>52230772
Op, the pentium is fine
>>
>>52230772
>What cpu would you go for (no dedicated gpu)?

I'm not too familiar with modern CPUs to be honest.
But I have an E5200 on one of the PCs and let's say this benchmark is legit:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2513&cmp[]=1097

The E5200 is what I'd consider the minimum for comfy browsing and the single core performance is still way better than the N3700.

I'd get a NUC or Zotac or one of those fanless things with a decent CPU, even something with AMD.
NUCs can be made fanless later, there are many cases to choose from.
>>
>>52229749
This made me kek
>>
>>52230859
I also have an old CPU with single thread rating 633 and it's indeed very sluggish on some sites.
>>
>>52230831
i hope it is but >>52230647 kinda makes me want to research a bit more

>>52230859
yeah, it is 2x faster at single-core. I'll fire up their old pc later today and compare results (its an old pentium 4). Any good heavy html5 sites to test it on?
Don't know about making something with a fan fan-less. Don't want it to meet the sweet release of death during summer (this year we almost got to 40C).

>>52230886
'tis my pleasure, m'lady *tips gentoo*
>>
>>52230992
>Any good heavy html5 sites to test it on?

Try opening a bunch of Play store tabs in Firefox, for example sites like this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=media.audioplayer.musicplayer
It rapes my CPU.

Also, check fanlesstech.com and silentpcreview.com for some fanless builds.
>>
>>52230772
Dedicated gpu's can be as low as 35$. You could find some decent or nice for under 100
>>
>>52230987
damnit, hopes crushed and burned. Unless your definition of "sluggish" differs from my parents'. Which could very well be the case, they are pretty old after all. I'll do some benchmarks with their old pc to try gage the required speed.

>>52231057
Those are some good resources, thanks a bunch. I'm eager to benchmark the old pc asap.

>>52231099
I'll go that route if I absolutely have to. But I really don't want to.
>>
I have a machine running a Celeron 1007u 1.5ghz dual core and its plenty for browsing and jewtube.
>>
>>52228880
I have a similar dilemma. I'm looking at a ITX board with either an Atom, A4-5000 APU, or a Pentium CPU. The Atom one uses SODIMMs, which means I can reuse the memory from my dead ASUS laptop, but the A4-5000 and Pentium are both four-core CPUs. Which one is better for a dedicated 24/7 file-sharing/shitposting machine?
>>
>>52232804
thats good news for me

>>52232807
I'd check the I/O performance just to make sure it can read and send stuff fast enough, you're really not asking for much power if you need it for nas/seedbox. People do that with raspberrys. Mostly depends on how smooth you want your shitposting to be. Good luck making a decision.
>>
>>52233352
I found these quad-core Celeron boards which could theoretically support 18 SATA3 drives with two PCIe x1 SATA cards and one mini-SAS HD card
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-q1900m
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/biostar-motherboard-j1900mh2
>>
I use a amd 5350 with an msi board and 8gb ddr3. More than enough for what i do and was really cheap too.
>>
>>52234243
>69 fucking freedom bucks

Jelly as fuck desu
>>
>>52234243
thats a serious pool of storage

>>52234642
I find great pleasure not exceding the performance required, feels good man.

>>52234668
truly the land of the free
as in hardware is almost free compared to eu/straya
>>
>>52234668
What's even better is that it's a low-power quad-core Celeron that uses 10W at 100% load compared to a desktop dual-core Celeron at 53W, is better at multi-threaded applications than the desktop Celeron, and is nearly $30 cheaper than a Celeron+micro ATX H81 board.
>>
>>52234814
They are excellent cpus and these deals are hard to beat since even shitty Intel CPUs are bretty expensive on their own.
>>
>>52234963
There is an AMD APU mini-ITX board that's only 15W, but it has a better iGPU than the Celeron. It's the one with the A4-5000. It only has one PCIe slot, and it's a 4x or something
>>
>>52234998
I've not checked AMDs low power offerings for a while but that CPU looks bretty gud to be honest.
>>
>>52230018
>I doubt the cpu can read over 500 MB/s or so.

Do you even know how computers work?
>>
>>52235377
It's about half the raw per-core power of a Kaveri A10-7800k, but you don't need heavy processing power for shitposting and hosting a music library.
>>
>>52235424
pretty sure some doolydads do some doolydaddying and then pixels are made on the maingrame

srsly doe, checked a benchmark where it read from an ssd slower than an i7, fuzzy on the exact numbers though senpai. Basically no point putting in an m.2 ssd if it won't utilise the bandwidth.
>>
Does the GTX 970 ACX 2.0 just not turn on its fans at all without Precision X running? I ran Unigine Valley and it went up to 75C and nothing spinning.
>>
>>52235453
Gonna be building a media PC for my parents breddy soon, settled on an Athlon 5350 build. Shit's gonna be fun.
>>
>>52228880

Stop wasting time and just buy a Mac Mini.
>>
>>52235670
The sapphire r7 250 is fanless and can do h.265 encoding plus 4k playback.

Where my money?
>>
>>52236568
no idea how evga configured the firmware, my gigabyte 960 turns on at about 60c I think, or was it 50c. Can't remember and not at home atm. Just google or ask them, they used to be pretty good on customer support. Honestly I'd worry if its reaching 80 with fans still idle, otherwise enjoy silent gayman.

>>52236753
Fun in an unfun, is it all gonna work, kind of way desu. Waiting for parts will also be a bitch, roads all kinds of frozen and slippery...

>>52236779
don't want my parents turning gay senpai :^)
Honestly I'd rather give up on technology altogether than give my shekels to apple.
>>
>>52228880
Have you thought about a case yet?
I have a QC5000 and I put it in a Chieftec IX-01B with it's corresponding power supply board. Cheap, but ok.
>not a single fan
>>
>>52236902
I just like doing the super space-efficient mini-ITX builds. Setup (usually the worst part) should be easy as fuck too, since there's hardly any drivers to install.
>>
>>52236859
>implying money award was promised
besides, this cpu will do video just fine
>>
>>52236902
Do you have geforce experience installed?
>>
>>52236909
A MAN CAN DREAM (might put a fan in for those cray summer temps, maybe have speedfan turn it on only when necessary...

gave 0 thought to the case, I'll wing it, doesn't have to be small/pretty, just fit stuff in.

>>52236937
hope I find as much joy in it as you brah

>>52236972
yep, I also have evga precision but haven't turned it on in months. I'm pretty sure my fans are under default firmware control.
>>
This question doesnt deserve its own thread and this thread kinda looks like its about self-build shit so here it goes:

I just bought corsair xms3 8gb to replace my 4gb corsair xms3, both run at 1.333. I never even contemplated what would happen if I shoved my old 4gb into the emtpy second ram slot.
>yes, I am aware that I am retarded for not knowing
>no, I could not find the answer on google
>ofcourse my rig is shit I'm ultrapoor and only play games on ugly settings
>>
>>52237049
Not exactly sure I understand what you're asking (it's pretty late so I'll be going to bed soon). Is the old ram the 4gb you replaced, and you're thinking about putting it i your old rig?
maybe you should try asking in /sqt/?
>>
>>52228880
belongs in
>>52235086
>/sqt/
>>
>>52237277
Yeah I took out the 4 and put in the 8. Theres one open slot next to the 8 and I'm contemplating putting the 4 in there, making a total of 12. I have a feeling its retarded but I'm not sure just how retarded it is.

Moving this question to /sqt/ now.
>>
>>52236568
>>52237036

Ah I checked, restarted windows and I use fps limiter in nvidia inspector since I only have a 60hz display. It reverted after turning off precision x and the fans come on above 60C. Unigine on ultra didn't go past 70C.
>>
>>52237498
glad you resolved it
>>
>>52237596
Thanks, PM'd you

[SOLVED]
>>
>>52233352
if it help i have a Celeron G550 with Integrated 2000 graphics and it gayms well at 768p and it's good at 60fps playback. Just remember to turn off all hardware acceleration
