NeXTSTEP is at its core was the Darwin 'kernel', some fancy really nice APIs and a Display PostScript windowing system.
Darwin is a Mach microkernel, combined with a bunch of NeXT servers (services in this context, not a physical server, yes I need to explain this to /g/) and the 4.3BSD userspace (inc. all utils)

Linux is an enterprise hackjob that, nonetheless, is much more useful if you actually want to "compute" using your computer instead of "experience" the results of other people's computation. It's more similar to other "REAL UNIX" systems than OS X in practicality.
Do not confuse the UNIX certification for UNIX usefulness

There were a few forks of Darwin back in the day, but I think they all died off.
The only proprietary parts are some drivers, and of course Aqua (which is really a separate project)
