Multiple monitors are a symptom of bad window management skills and/or software.
Notice how it's mostly Windows users who "need" multiple monitors?
>>52218768
Uh... no.
Sometimes I want to look at two things at the same time.
If I am doing something that requires me to read instructions, maybe communicate with someone while I work, when I type a paper maybe I need my reference material on hand, having multiple HD porn photos up at the same time, etc.
>>52218814
You can't read two texts simultaneously at an adequate speed.
Switch virtual desktops.
>>52218768
I'm sorry that you're poor and can only afford one display.
Sometimes it's easier to just dump shit onto a second monitor
like assignment on one side code on other side
it's not super necessary, but then again, what is?
>>52218768
you realize all Linus does is read emails on the LKML right?
>>52218910

= insufficient window management skills
>>52218768
You're a moron
For webdev two monitors is objectively better. In fact I used to use basically three - on my MacBook I would have my terminal open, then on one monitor I'd have Chrome, then on the other monitor Sublime. Everything I need to see at once.
Get your company to buy you better shit.
Oh wait, you're probably a NEET.
>>52218977
whatever
>>52218989
>MacBook
Stopped reading.
OS X has terrible window management facilities.
>>52218859
I dont need to look at something to type it.
>>52218768
Are you that much of a child that you need people to approve of your single monitor set up? Is that why you made this thread?
>>52218768
i'm a linux user and use 3 monitors.
left monitor: specifications and documentation
main (middle) monitor: code i'mcurrently working on
right monitor: reference code and testing
it's just easier and faster for me to work that way
4k video editing, audio mixing(especially ADR), and spreadsheets are fine examples of using multi screens/projectors. How doe sit feel being poor?
>>52218814
>Sometimes I want to look at two things at the same time.
it's literally impossible to look at more than one thing at once
>>52219204
I can actually look at two things at once by going crosseyed and I can somehow focus on both things at once, probably from practising doing those 3D stereogram image things. It's not the most comfortable of things though and it's far better to just use a proper window manager.
>>52218768
>Notice how it's mostly Windows
Multiple display support Xorg is shit.
>>52218768
>clearly op doesnt do any kind of work at all.
i work on video games so i need one screen for debug info/code and the other for the software im working on
>>52218814
This. By the time I switch windows or virtual desktops I forget what I just read. So much easier with 2 monitors. One large monitor would work too.
i've got four screens and I use them all for porn and video games so fuck you niggers.
if i dont have multiple monitors i cant play games while watching movies or chatting on irc
I nearly always use Awesome or Openbox. I have three monitors and there is never any empty space. Generally have 3-4 windows per monitor.
Well after buying a better monitor it only makes sense to not throw it away but instead use it as a second screen for more desktop space.
lmaoing at single screen fags
>>52218768
When I see posts like this, I always wonder what somebody did to make this passive aggressive faggot run straight to the internet to start paying out at people so he doesn't have to stick around to see their responses.

lol. i have three 24 inch monitors on my desk at home and four at work.
>>52218870
this
which would you think is better as a main monitor.
a 32" tv using vga cables or a 20" monitor using dvi cables..
>>52221575
both are capable of 1620 X1050
>>52218768
Sometimes I need to have two monitors so I can watch youtube in one and have a full screen open for CS:GO or whatever. Switching between a game and browser can be a pain in the ass or taxing on computers that don't have a lot of computing power.
>>52221575
DVI>VGA
20" is sufficient as a main monitor, unless you plan to use it as an HTPC and view stuff from couch distances.
alt-tab hurts my wrist from doing it 100 times a day on irc
you must be new here
Three words: Al Jazeera YouTube Livestreem
>pleb
>not watching/listening to live news and use the livestream chatroom
Seriously, it's fun to do your work on two other monitors while the livenewschat runs on another screen
>being poor
>not using a dynamic tiling + floating window manager and two monitors
wew
>>52218768
because it's so easy to keep switching my monitor from portrait to landscape every few seconds
>>52218768
I have three and i use all of them... nothing todo with skills.... I do it because I can.... like a dog licks his balls
>>52218859
I watch a movie or anime on one screen and do whatever on the other.
I switch my attention back and forth
>>52218989
you have your browser the whole width of your monitor?
>>52218768
>I'm too poor to have more than one monitor
Usually run 8 virtual desktops, 4 on each of two monitors. I would hate myself if I had to use 8 on one monitor. I usually have two different projects I'm working on and I need a browser, an editor, and multiple terminals for each project. It's nice to organize them across two monitors.
Yea, OP is a fucking retard.

Linus isn't poor. You are not Linus. You are too poor to have more than one monitor.
>>52222060
Not to mention the resolution you'll get from a TV that Anon presumably has just lying around often will be shit
Development senpai. One for code, one for docs/porn
>>52223200
>no u
Second monitor is for generally passive input tasks like email client or music player that I might need to glance at on occasion to see if they need active input. Switching virtual desktops for this would force me to stop what I'm doing entirely, change desktops to see what information needed action, if any, and then changing back. Massive waste of time.
>>52218768
I like having two to organize my work, for instance I would have a Web browser and irc (or other communcation) taking up one side and vim and stuff on the other.
>>52218768
Agreed. A single 27" 1440p is plenty for me. I can switch windows faster than I can turn my head, and I have plenty of space for two side-by-side.
>>52218768
