Bad analogy. An early car to see wide distribution, not really an early car period. More like an Apple II or something.

They could do more with 5mb than 999,999 out of 1,000,000 programmers can do with 5GB today.
I'm especially looking at you Chrome and Firefox.

This.

And although this thread is a bait, I know there are people that are genuinely this fucking stupid online at the moment. Kind of hurts, to be honest.

That's a lot of storage!
Just to put it into perspective, if you save EVERY SINGLE image in this tread into that drive you'd still have almost 1,400,000bytes left over.
>>

5MB is a lot senpai.

OP will never write 5mb of raw tekst in his life.

Text documents. Tons of text documents. For safer archival than floppies could ever deliver.
>>
>>52216192
that moment when we realize
all the forums posts
all the imageboard post
all the floodings and chat session on AIM. IRC. MSN. Skype. Omegle
all the greentext stories
all the chat, rage, fun, trollings in DA comments, Furaffinity, Youtube comments,
all the old BASIC and DOS commands to the last apt-get command entered
all the notepad, write, word, xpress documents

all of that fits on a 1.44Mb floppy disk

._.

In the early '80s a 5MB hard drive was still useful.
A 20MB drive was considered large and when I bought a 100MB drive in the early '90s I was challenged to justify it.
As for the RAMAC, I saw one in use in the late '60s. The disks were large, there were only 2 read/write actuators and they were pneumatically actuated. The seek time from one disk to another was measured in seconds.
But it held more and was more reliable than the drum memory which was the only alternative.

In the '50s we didn't save video; there was no way of displaying it. The .gif was the only common pic format. Sound was a joke.
>>
>>52216456
i'm going to calculate that just on my irc and email archives. raw text only.
>>
The caption is wrong, it's a computer being delivered, not a hard drive.

There were no hard drives in those days anyway, it was all tape storage

So we could have memes now. Computers were pointless up until the appearance of memes.
>>
Five megs is quite a bit unless you run a fuckton of bloatware
>>
>>52217801
xd

they wanted it for maths only come on. dont forget that maths and physics calculations are the whole point of computers originally
>>
>>52214484
Back then, computing mostly involved plain text as the data being worked on. And software was very basic, so binaries wouldn't have taken up much either.

Hell, even in the 80s I was able to store multiple programs on a 360K floppy.
>>
Maths that is not really possible for a human or a team of humans to do properly, like Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics.
>>
>>52214484
They could store all the accounts receivable for the entire IBM European division.

>>
>>52214484
They wrote programs that used em, imagine the size of the data table that could fit on 5mb.
That is 5 million bytes! You could do math problems that would otherwise take days instantly.
>>
>>52220764
switch days with years my bad.

This was actually made by African people in the 19th century.
