I usually have 5 desktops open, with browsers, text editors/word processors, and other programs open in each; I'm usually around 5-6gb "idle" with this setup. If I only had 8gb, I wouldn't be able to launch some other resource intensive program, such as a game, with everything else open. Upgrading to 16gb was the best upgrade I've done in a long time.
