Why do you archive? & Ease of having it there when you need it? Feeling superior to others by having more 1s & 0s?

How do you archive? Any guidelines you follow?

Books and games mainly. I have a ton of music as well but I wouldn't call that hoarding as I listen to most of my library pretty regularly. I have this weird urge to have some backup of games and books if things go to shit and like internet gets destroyed or something so I have shit to read and play, I can't really explain it. Books also mainly because I get interested in some subject, download a ton of books and only read a few but I don't delete them, it feels wrong...as if I was burning them.

This but add in with movies and tv shows. I probably watch more of my content than this anon reads but there is some stuff there that I downloaded and may probably never watch. And I'm not trying to be an ass, it just takes longer to read a book than it does to watch a movie and I can store thousands of books in the space it takes for a movie.

I do it mostly in case netflix or whatever no longer has the content available so that I may view anytime but also because I like being able to entertain myself (or others) without relying on an internet connection. I just use a small windows computer sharing folders over the network and I just physically back up the data to two other drives so it is in three places (two backup 'internal' hdds and an external)

my setup:

>1TB internal storage hard drive that everything gets downloaded to
>1TB external where the important non-porn shit gets backed up
>3TB external where the porn gets backed up to
>1TB external, this is the offsite backup that I have hidden inside my best friend's house without his knowledge

everything is encrypted with either truecrypt, diskcryptor or bitlocker btw.

I'm using FreeFileSync with the "mirror" preset to easily sync and update my external hard drives.

http://www.freefilesync.org/

I'm also using the 3-2-1 backup strategy:

"A 3-2-1 strategy means having at least 3 total copies of your data, 2 of which are local but on different mediums (read: devices), and at least 1 copy offsite".

I do an extensive spring cleaning atleast once a year where i will first go through everything and delete unimportant stuff. Then I will organize everything into folders and begin a new cycle of just downloading everything to one big and messy folder. Rinse and repeat every year.

I've been thinking about getting a NAS, but the price concerns me. It would also need to have full disk encryption, something that i have no idea if consumer grade equipment has.

Having so much fucking backups.

A normal man would simply have one backup on a brand new HDD,and be done with it.

And if you're the same anon,at least get one 6TB WD Black HDD. It's much cleaner than having 3 1TB drives and one 3TB drive.

Seriously, here's a pic of a 6TB drive. You can get two if you like the load of cache it has. (128MB)
>>
>>52214019
>Having so much fucking backups
One local and one remote backup doesn't sound that much.

If you're buying now, sure. But when you have old smaller drives around you don't just throw them away.

>>

>>
>>52214100
In his case,they're 3 local (2x 1TB and 1x 3TB) and one remote.

Seriously,if he wanted that much of a space,he could just have got a fast 6TB WD Black (pictured above),and use that.

As for older drives,a RAID array for capture card recordings.

>>52214245
And why don't you trust them?I've seen them being used a lot, especially on surveillance systems, and 2TB drives often end up in old original Xboxes with SATA-IDE adapters. And sell for pretty good prices, about $200-$300.

And why the hell would someone need THREE copies?

Even if I backup stuff,I only back it up once on ONE drive, and be done with it.

And another aspect that triggers my autism,is encrypting the drives. Holy fuck,do you even think NSA or any government agency would even care to give the slightest fucking shit about your porn? Like really,I could guess there is a lot of people having porn on their HDD,but nobody is that turbo-paranoid to fucking encrypt their drive.

>>
>>52214439
>And why the hell would someone need THREE copies?
One local backup because it's handy and fast.
And a remote backup in case of house burning down/thieves etc.
Seriously, it's perfectly reasonable.

>And another aspect that triggers my autism,is encrypting the drives.
It's not like it takes a lot of time to type in a password, so why not? It's pretty much a negligible amount of effort.
>>
>>52214521
The HGST 4TB are very reliable and have the lowest failure rates on the market.
>>
>>52214521
>are multiple TB HDD more reliable now
They are,as long as you avoid some of the blue WDs,since they just recently incorporated 5400RPM Green drives into the blue line (they discontinued green line)

Also,just for laughs,but I once got a Excelstor 80GB IDE HDD on my hands.And suddenly,I feel old. It died tho,and was replaced by a fresh-formatted 60GB Maxtor 5400RPM drive.

>>52214577
>And a remote backup in case of house burning down/thieves etc.
Or simply a big drive with lots of partitions, that you can keep all the time in a safe place. It's that simple, and I find this more reasonable than having a load of drives.

As for passwords, again,do you honestly think any government agency would care about your porn?I wouldn't be worried unless you have illegal stuff in there. But in most cases, nobody has illegal porn stored on their drives. That's why encrypting drives seems a load of bullshit to me.
>>
>>52214634
>a safe place
Good for you if you have such a place at home.
Storing data remotely is easy as fuck though, so why not?

>do you honestly think any government agency would care about your porn?
1. I never even mentioned gov. agencies.
2. People do have private stuff that they want to hide from whoever. It's very common.
>>
>>52214634

Damn. I just got a 1TB blue, but it's 7200 so I guess I'm okay. I should keep up with HDDs more often. I rarely buy them.

>What do you archive?
Anime, Movies, TV shows, Porn, Music.

>Why do you archive?
Availability. It's sorted in the folder so I know exactly where I can find it, instead of having to search for a long time on the web to find what I want, and it's usually in shitty quality (720p) on streaming sites.

Bookmarks are pretty dumb. The stuff I watch usually gets removed from sites a lot due to copyright issues, so why not just save it so you can keep the content permanently?

>How do you archive? Any guidelines you follow?
I torrent 95% of my content. My porn and music are downloaded straight onto my computer's HDD, while the rest is stored by a harddrive connected to my raspberry pi, which seeds 24/7.

For videos I usually never download in anything less than 1080p. My monitors are 1080p, so why would I watch anything with shitty quality when storage space isn't a problem?
>>

>truecrypt, diskcryptor or bitlocker

he also said that one of those three copies should be remote, so that's what he did:
1 local original
2 local copy
1 remote copy
>>
>>52214696
>2. People do have private stuff that they want to hide from whoever. It's very common.
My way to do that is store them in a weird folder nobody would look in:

e.g. I stored a near-lewd wallpaper of Ryuko Matoi in C:\Windows\System32\en-us\Licenses. Nobody would ever access the folder, being that deep into windows.

>Storing data remotely is easy as fuck though, so why not?

In that case,it still isn't 100% viable. The HDD could happen to fail.

Again,it would be more viable to have all backups local, just that they're stored in a dry impermeable enclosure, and then the enclosure to be stored in a safe place of his choice.

He could anytime upgrade it.

As well as for *cough*pirated*cough* Movies.

Two of the 4tb drives are mirrored onto the other two, same with the 5tb drives.

They're not in a RAID though, I aync them manually with freefilesync. That way if anything happens to the machines I can just drop the required drive into a different PC or external enclosure.

seeing as most cloud storage providers only offer 100GB or 1TB, wouldn't it be better to just buy a 128GB usb 3.0 flash drive and keep it with me at all times?

Samsung has a new one for about $40 which seems like a good enough deal. Pretty sure you can encrypt it like a hard drive, atleast you can usb dongle with bitlocker
>>
>>52211327
just upload all of them

There are tools that highlight files in odd places and ranks files based on oddity. It would bump to the top of the list using these tools.
>>
>>52217912
Yes, cloud is a joke and over all very scary way of storing data. (Since you have no control over the hard drives)

Operating Systems. I have nearly 170+ GB of OS ISOs. From systems like OS/2 to Windows 10 Enterprise. I hoard them, mostly running them in VirtualBox to check them out. Most of the Linux ISOs I have are there in case of an emergency or just to see if I like them enough to do a full install. To this date, I haven't actually installed a single Linux OS, just Windows.
>>
>>52218284
Kek same here but I've gotten rid of some of them. I have maybe 70gb worth of OS.
>>
I have about 5 tb hentai manga, 2 tb eroge, 1 tb hentai anime, 2 tb anime. about 1 tb misc stuff and ten thousands of books/lns. Stored on a homemade nas running debian with zol with about 20tb net capacity.
>>
>>52210863
Primarily:
1tb+ of movies and TV shows.
2tb of books, installers, infographics (4chan info library and some scraped from sites), comics, etc.
Around 500gb nippon content, not that big on animus and it's mostly manga.

>>52217912
I have almost 1TB of NEF files. If you're autistic like me you'll have 2 hard drives in different locations.
>>
Books, movies, TV series, anime, manga, documentaries, porn, games, music, photos I've taken myself, photos other people have taken (Flickr, 500px etc), wallpapers, art front pixiv/boorus, pics from imageboards.

It's been a while since ice counted the gigs, but it's over 250TB of stuff.
>>
>>52210863
I got a 3tb hdd and cannibalized an ssd from my old laptop. Now I realize that I have no idea what to do with 3 tb, since I've always managed my storage carefully.
>>
>>52220626
>over 250TB
Just in drives alone that would cost over 8.5k. How the fuck do you afford it, how can you possibly fill so much?
>>
>>52220626
>but it's over 250TB of stuff.
Pics of data center pls

What the fuck happened to the 100tb SSD supposed to be released this year

My 6TB deskstar is fucking full

What the fuck would you possibly need 250tb worth of stuff for? You're never gonna be able to view any of that.

Shit, I meant 25TB.
Sorry, it's late.
>>
>>52212219
Use toutbox, literally unlimited storage, i have 3 tb there
>>
>>52220913
Is that 25tb including redundancy? What's your setiup?
>>
>>52215516
Don't fall for the zfs meme. I'm stuck with a 10TB NAS that performs like shit because of ZFSs garbage fragmentation. Consider rockstor or rolling a self-made btrfs array.

>HGST 4TB
Which one?
I see two of them on amazon

>btrfs

Is that even finished yet?
>>
>>52221041
Btrfs is as a filesystem is in a stable state. However the tools for recovering broken raid 5/6 are said to be inconsistent. That being said I've never personally ever seen anyone have any issues with the raid 5/6 components of the filesystem that were not down to user error.
>>
>>52221041
tl;dr use it, don't abuse it. I'd trust my porn/backed up data on it but not my company's secrets
>>
>>52221090
>>52221105
Fair enough I might give it a test. I wouldn't use raid 5/6 anyway but I keep hearing its not finished so I've never looked into it.
>>
>>52217265
>50 gigabytes of pr0n already gone from the internet
If some of that is from the old 4chan camwhores upload it to mega pretty please, I'm keeping a sync folder of it and maybe I could add something new
>>
information resources and software mostly for old enterprise/UNIX shit

doesn't need a lot of space so I can get by with a couple 1TB drives
>>
>>52221159
>Fair enough I might give it a test. I wouldn't use raid 5/6 anyway but I keep hearing its not finished so I've never looked into it.

Pretty much sums up the PR for btrfs. Everyone got told it wasn't finished so nobody uses it for production.

yeah i know man they tend to be worse on music though that shit will get you banned before you have even uploaded it

What about ReFS? Is it even worth looking at?
>>
lol i think im in a bad place.
i have 4 external hdd's atm 1 2TB, 2 1.5TB, and 500GB in addition to my 500gb internal.
mostly anime and movies i picked up while in the military to keep boredom away. Havent been able to buy dvd's since i got out they take up too much space.
>>
>>52221332
>ReFS
Someone suggested it to me and I actually considered using a MS product for storage (this is a horrible idea never do it btw). A week later the person who recommended it to me lost their whole dataset to corruption. I avoid MS filesystems like the plague.

>Hard-to-find porn (retired pornstars, random amateur vids that I really liked, unsourceables...)
>torrented games (those unfindables, those too big to be redownloaded, those freqeuntly needed for LANs)
>Specific music albums
>All folders from abandoned project

The most important thing is that I make backups by transferring all the content from the old hard disk into the newer one as one folder, so you can actually navigate up to the content from my first HDD just like you would cut a tree and count the circles to check its age.
>>
>>52221041
i've been using btrfs on top dm-crypt/luks on top of mdadm raid 6 for around a year now. 35T+ of data.
had to rebuild the raid twice because of drive failures, but no problems with btrfs.
>>
>>52221394
Yeah I've not heard amazing things. Just thought Microsoft maybe got their shit together and is replacing ntfs.

Not even a question.
I collect these fuckers like trading cards.
I remember times when i had to bite my hat because i wanted to watch something but couldn't because it's gone online or i didn't remember the site.
Won't happen again! Now i have dominion over every file i have a sentimental worth attached to.

All my school work since middle school up to date which is 5th year in my career.

Also all the Hentai manga I liked because I knew it was gonna disappear from the net one day. And I was right, shit is getting deleted left and right.

I have a 4tb hdd for nearly every type of media. I hoard manga, anime, TV shows, movies, but by far and away, the thing occupying most of my frankenstorage is porn. I have 3 4tb for each one as well as all my old <4tb drives reserved for porn, and its spilling over onto all the less occupied drives as well, like my manga drive. I just bought a new external 4tb for more porn too

I'll probably never get around to viewing it all either, but my philosophy is that if it makes my penis so much as tingle, I'll download it. Fortunately, I'm kind of picky but still
>>
nothing anymore

it's all shit

I like saving ASMR videos
especially because there are plenty of girls who were known to have channels and then later delete them

I'm sure I have a few unpopular channels that have been wiped which nobody bothered saving
>>
>>52224146
>ASMR videos
i never got the appeal of these care to explain?
>>
>>52224213
They're relaxing, good for concentration. (not op)
>>
>>52224213
it's relaxing, through hearing sounds

the same way rain is relaxing, a crackling fire, hearing someone quietly bustling in the other room, or maybe hearing someone walk down a quite hallway, any soft rhythmic/taping sound really

personal attention videos are kinda related because they simulate, at the very least audibly, the relaxation sensation of receiving personal attention irl, (haircuts, massages, being touched/tickled ect)
>>
Anime, Porn, and other shit

Anime is in RSRV

Others is in MISC

Porn...doesn't have a place yet....
>>
>>52223456
I hope for your sake you have your porn saved in a RAID array and at least one off-site backup. The thought of 4 tb of porn being gone with a dead drive hurts me.
