80C is probably normal under max load with stock cooler.
My understanding is that you won't lose any performance until you're running at approx 100C, and I'd bet you could heat it up to 200C for 30 seconds or so without any damage (though with Intel it should automatically shut down your whole system when it hits 125C or so).

Alright, later today i'm going to play XCOM and Hitman: Absolution with the settings cranked all the way up (minus pointless AA and Iso), and see how it goes. I bet it will reach 90C which really doesn't seem healthy.

Actual thermal paste (vs the stock thermal pad) would bring your temps down a few degrees probably. Honestly I'd just leave it unless you see it's bumping against 100C and throttling your performance.
Of course a nice third-party cooler would let you turn all your fans down and have a quiet system, if you care.

If you suspect it's mis-seated try pushing it around. If it feels loose, just make sure all it's pins are snapped-in correctly.

What model monitor is that?
I am looking to duplicate this setup. Ideally the outermost monitors would be like 1600xXXXX resolution, however I want the tops to be flush with the three monitors in the center. The best example of a three monitor setup that goes with the monitor I own (Dell u3011) is a Dell 2007fp. My guess is the 2007fp cannot sit as high as the u3011 with the stand it comes with. I have a strong desire to keep all of these monitors flush at the top without taking several hundred dollars out of the budget for custom stands.
In the last thread someone suggested the leftmost monitor in the image (video) was an LG IPS 231 which appears to be just a standard 1920 x 1080 monitor (which is fine I just want to look at documents and some software on that monitor anyway but I would appreciate more real estate if possible. If I'm just looking at a 23" monitor in portrait orientation would a u2311 or 2310h work just as well? I only have the u3011 and I want to spend as little money while trying to keep the top of the monitors flush or my brain will explode. If anyone has an image of a u3011 or a 2007fp next to a widescreen monitor in portrait orientation where the tops are flush like that I would really appreciate seeing it to reassure myself that I am making the right choice for this setup.
I suppose if you cannot recommend the 23 inch monitor I would likely look at ultrawide monitors and just get some custom stands. That said, I don't know shit about custom stands or about ultrawide monitors. Generally I would just wing this but I am making this setup x 3 (one for each of my spaces so I can remote into the original setup if I leave the country). Plz halp.

For me a big part of using this is the ability to snap windows by monitor. The tile function takes a large portion of two of those screens and the HUD is useful when put on horizontal monitors.
The other obvious element is cost. It is much cheaper to buy 4 old monitors than to buy one 4k, also 4k wouldn't really allow me to do what I want here. I also may need to duplicate this setup in 2 or 3 locations so i can RDP without changing the resolutions. The cost of 3 4k monitors is prohibitive imo, and I already have 3 x u3011 monitors.
After some thought I am going to go with a 1920x1080 for the two outermost monitors probably in the 23" variety.
If I don't like that I'll try some ultrawides in the margins. Thanks for the input overall I guess. Will post bst when it is setup.
