Buy a cheap USB hard drive or flash drive and install Debian onto that. Just make sure you remove the windows hard drive first because grub is sketchy and will probably overwrite the windows boot loader if you don't know what you're doing.

First. Do you use the window multiple desktops powertoy? Whats it like?
Second. Have you tried setting a webpage as you desktop? (I know you can do this in xp)
Three. Did you know that the windows program manager from earlier versions of ships with xp? (Progman.exe) it was only cut aftet xp sp2. If you have an earlier version of it you can fire it up.
