For users of all levels, including absolute beginners

If you are serious about switching to Linux, use it exclusively for 2 weeks, avoid booting to windows for that period of time, or you are likely to start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to linux as your new home and working on making it feel comfortable

You can safely experience installation process and the basic usage through a virtual machine

So I have an encrypted container to store files in. I have it set up so when I double click on the img file I get a dialog that asks for the encryption passphrase. After I put that in it mounts and I can access it.

However, every time it mounts it is read-only.

Why? I tried changing the permissions and it either says I can't, or they don't stick.

Anyone have any ideas? I am trying to replace Truecrypt containers with LUKS-based encrypted image files.

I am using Fedora. When I double click the container it uses something called "Disk Image Mounter." My guess is it's mounting as read-only because it isn't being run as root. I don't want to run as root anyway, because I want to be able to edit the files.

I would rather not use the console for this, to streamline the workflow. So to speak. It's just so much easier to double click a file and input the passphrase.

However, if I have to use a script, where do I find information on writing one. And what would be the easiest way to use it?

Why does building from source marginally improve speed or something?

Why aren't package managers built up such that it downloads source and builds it then?

Sorry for being retarded.
>>
>>52202577
Because downloading the source code for everything takes a lot of bandwidth and compiling everything takes a lot of time.
>>
>>52202554

Despite that, no package managers have gone that route?
>>
>>52202577
You're also building it in your cpu's arch, and you can add other basic switchs to improve it running on your system.
Binaries dont do this
>>
>>52202609
Most packages in Gentoo are compiled locally. On Arch, you can download -git versions of packages from AUR that are compiled on after downloading.
>>
>>52202664
Cool. Guess that option makes those superior distros?
>>
>>52202577
>Why aren't package managers built up such that it downloads source and builds it then?
Because it can easily take up to 2 hours to compile behemoths like Firefox on not-so-good hardware while it the same time performance difference is almost nonexistent?
>>
>>52202694
Superior in what regard exactly?
Streamlining the compilation process? For sure.

Increasing usability? Fuck no
>>
>>52202595
No, most source is smaller than binaries, except for large packages.
>>52202577
You compile the code according to the architecture you have and the binary isn't built with universal use in mind as most binaries are in distros (they have to be compatible for every piece of hardware which can make it considerably slower depending on the sacrifices that the particular package makes for your particular hardware).
There are package managers that are designed to build from source, such as portage. Most people don't want to wait for their packages to compile though and prefer the (perhaps) slower but generic built packages.
>>
>>52202722
So those distros have horrible documentation and usability? I guess I'll stay away then.
>>
>>52202753

You asked whether they are superior. They are not

>>52202753
No, they have far superior documentation. The only down side is that you need to know more if there are complications and the time it takes to compile some packages. They are superior distros overall though, they're just not for everyone.

According to the man page, gnome-disk-image-mounter defaults to mounting files as read-only. I don't know how to change this default.

If I run the program from the terminal I get pic related. In the bottom corner of the window is a check box that lets you mount it as RW.

I wish there was a way to change the default to RW, but for now I can run the program and mount the containers this way.

no, only the user ID should be the same

in most cases the first non-system user is "1000" (and group 1000)

as long as those match you won't have permission issues, as permissions revolve only around these ID's

you can change your ID if needed in /etc/passwd and /etc/group (be sure not to use an ID more than once!)

opebox is loaded on top of your hardware settings.

What do you have different in your other de/wm that you arent doing now in openbox?
Openbox is the most minimalist wm you can get.It dosent have advanced shit that would fuck it up
I would HIGHLY suggest checking out atleast one of the config options and atleast get a default profile in some config

seriously frustrated here, looking to move from gentoo to debian, I had no trouble installing gentoo from usb (I've been using it for a month) but suddenly my computer does not want to boot from usb for anything.

I've looked it up, all bios settings are set correctly (using a gigabyte motherboard, 4 years old). Tried 3 different brands of usb in all the slots. Tried fucking with all bios settings. The usb always shows up in the boot menu, I select it, and it says "loading operating system..." forever. I also tried booting to parted magic (which I have used before on this very machine) and lo, it does not work. I have no Idea what's wrong.

I also tried disconnecting the SSD that had gentoo on it, so it's just the usb and a couple blank HDDs when I start it up, and it still doesn't want to load. Anyone had this problem?
>>
>>52206246
Is the live disk setup for the right bios loader?
You might have gpt when you need bios and vice versa. If you have ept, make sure you're setting it to be ept instead of ms-dos
>>
>>52206307
I'm not sure what you mean, is this something to set from the motherboard setup menu or a different iso download? I've been using unetbootin to make the live usb, but it doesn't seem to have too many setup options
>>
>>52206408
It could be how your iso is configured, see if there is a uefi or bios version available. It depends on how the iso is configured to support either both or one or the other,in the grub config that makes it bootable.
>>
>>52206445
Well, I'm trying another download now just to be sure, it says bt-hybrid instead of iso-hybrid in the directory it's in, and it's standard instead of netinstall, but I don't really see any other options on the Debian website.

The thing that really confuses me is parted magic not working, because I literally used the same ISO I've used in the past to set up the live usb. I guess something must have changed, but I also tried restoring the defaults in the bios menu
>>
>>52206592

After spending the last 72 hours trying to get Arch Linux running on my old macbook air I fucking finally figured out how to reinstall OSX instead!

>Friendly Linux Thread
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

So, I'm new to this, but some combination of the Arch wiki and the information out there on the net.
The Arch wiki told to create conky.conf and I did, but if I edit it as shown by the Arch wiki, with "double_buffer yes" for example, it either reads it as a syntax error, or expects to end before that, and either way conky won't load.
Little help? LIke I said, running Arch. I have the cinnamon desktop environment, I just want to make it look a little nicer with some fun displays.

New at this, not had Linux for years, forgotten everything I knew. Thanks for taking the time to read.
