It could be a low RAM problem on your device. You should have at least 200MB of free RAM. When android has no free ram it scrambles to kill apps left and right which causes some to crash.
Try greenify to help you free up some RAM and delete apps you don't use.
If that alao doesn't work then I have no idea what's wrong.

I would suggest using another open source chan app if Clover gives you trouble and isn't being updated. I suggest Chanu (get it from F-Droid. Google Play pulled it. Boo) or Overchan (get from F-Droid as well. The version from Google Play doesn't have a board list installed by default. The latter supports many imageboards too and has a lot of features. Both of them support stuff like 4chanPass, HTTPS etc...

I'm using kit kat too and had to downgrade to 2.0 version because 2.2 kept crashing.
I didn't try cleaning the cache but that's because clean master does it for me, I also have plenty of ram.
