The 970 and 390 have roughly the same performance in 1080, and the 390 pulls ahead at higher resolutions.
Plus more vram, and odds are it will build to be a long lasting card more so than the 970.

I got a 970 for the power usage and CUDA and it runs everything I want it to pretty well at 4k and 1080p 144Hz. If you don't mind power usage get a 390, I think they are cheaper and have more memory up to 8gb.

How are AMD drivers in comparison to the Nvidia ones for their current cards?
I've been warned to stay away from AMD for that reason, but I can't tell if that was just a maymay.

Depends on the operating system assuming you're not using Crimson drivers. On Linux they're absolute trash without a ton of tweaking at least until AMD decides to assign some developers to the task of working on them more. On Windows they run great.
Honestly though either card will be great. I personally have a 970 since all I do is 1080p stuff and I got mine on a huge sale. Whatever works for you.

No idea what you're talking about. Either way, the 15.11 and 15.12 versions both come with crimson. The 15.11.1 version is the latest pre-Crimson driver and that one is a beta driver. The latest stable release prior to Crimson is 15.7.
