Enable these filters to block that too.

Add more shit to the anti-adblock filter.
>>
>>52190867
This.

Also e-mail the site owner and tell them you ad-blocked there plea because you hate being harassed. Attach a few hi-res photos of horse cocks with it.

>>52190824
Replace Adblock\ABP with uBlock Origin and enable the filters like in >>52190867

How do we overcome this /g/? Servers cost a lot to maintain and advertising pays a pittance unless you use video ads or pop ups (even then its not a lot)

People won't pay for a subscription, people hate ads and rarely do sites get whitelisted.

There has to be a good way where creators get paid and consumers don't get spammed.
>>
>put annoying banner ads on site
>people start getting annoyed, start blocking banner ads
>what is the solution?
>!
>MORE ANNOYING BANNERS! YEAH, THAT WILL FIX IT!

I do not understand this.
>>
>>52190944
I don't think there is one until we get subscription based internet.
>>
>>52190944
Non-annoying ads? The internet is over 20 years old, and it worked perfectly fine before. Internet advertising is a solved problem.

People just got greedy.

>Why have one ad on my page, when I can have 37!!!

And that is how adblock came to be.
>>
>>52190961
A lot of people are smart enough to install ad blocking software, but not smart enough to install the right ad blocking software. On AMO there are 19.3kk downloads for adblockplus and 0.6kk for ublockorigin.
>>
>>52190961
Seriously. They should try designing ads that aren't obnoxious flashy bullshit.
>>
>>52190824

It's dangerous to browse alone! Take this.

https://github.com/reek/anti-adblock-killer
>>
>>52191014
It is as though people do not remember the internet that existed before the deluge of ads. Old pages would have subtle, non-flashy, no-sound, non-popup, non-pornographic ads, and no one minded.

If websites were responsible with their advertising (i.e. did not annoy visitors), no one would use adblock.
>>
>>52190944
> servers cost a lot to maintain

Bullshit. You can run an AWS instance with enough guts to handle 1 page view per second for like $2 a month.
>>
>>52190995
I'd love to see some screenshots of some major ad supported news sites etc, showing the amount (and irritation level) of ads over time.
>>
>>52190961
>>what is the solution?
Serve the ads from the same origin as the content. If users block them, they also block the content.

Good thing most web weenies are too stupid to realize and implement this.
>>
>>52191114
Then how does the advertiser know how many ad views they're getting?

>>52190944
The solution is the popping of the ad driven web bubble. Most content on the internet is garbage. If you're using a sane web stack you can host a medium sized website on a $5/month VPS with a cheap domain name. You can literally do that on a McDonald's income, or your allowance if you're still a high school kid.
>b-but my WordPress and plugins and themes
You're part of the problem. Use a static blog generator or hand write your HTML+CSS and watch your load average drop to damn near zero.
>b-but I want to blog for a living
The value of a blog is zero. If you're writing things of actual value you can get a real job or accept donations.

>>52191127

Easy.
Stop visiting the website.

Ad blockers don't block any ads, it just stops the computer from requesting ads.

Shut up, people are talking here.
>>
>>52190995
Yeah people did get greedy, then adblockers unsolved the problem again. Now they block pretty much everything except for the small subset of things adblock plus doesn't block by default.

It's unsustainable for people who don't abuse ad placement because now advertisers don't pay much for text and image ad.
>>
>>52191145
explain to me then, how you would serve ads from an advertiser on the same OCS as the website in a way that can't be gamed by the site owner to make it appear that the ad has been viewed more times than it actually has.
>>
>>52191159
>ad blockers just stop ads from loading but don't block ads

This is literally what you just said.
>>
>>52190995
>The internet is over 20 years old, and it worked perfectly fine before
there's been literally no advancement -technologies, number of users, nada - in the web, at all for the past 20 years. gotcha

the internet should literally be ascii on a 15x15 monochrome monitor BECAUSE I SAY SO, jewish advershills
>>
>>52191066
Yeah maybe if you serve plaintext

Your bandwidth will catch up to you and make your server expensive to operate.

Then ads pay you point cents per page view. Ads will never reasonably pay for your hosting until advertisers come to you.
>>
>>52191159
Actually I use uBlock so I just hide my ads.

>>52191548
You're here. So, the question is, how garbage is the rest of your life if the "garbage" internet is preferable to it?
>>
I used to enable ads for websites that did this.

However, nowadays, all of them do this. And afterwards, they bombard me with ads like there's no tomorrow.

I like how one website I visited told me that "because I disabled my AdBlocker, I would get an \"Ad-Light experience\" for a month".
They still had like 20 ads on every page.
Makes me wonder what the actual experience is like.
>>
>>52191891
How do you fit so many ads on a page?
>>
>>52192361
Just put them everywhere. 3x2 grid into the content, some columns at the sides, some in the top row, done.

I can't believe they don't see that this is NOT acceptable.

I wound make an exception just for this site, they should pay for hosting, domain name and spend some time to be able to produce some content, advertisment is the only way to earn some money, so if they ask I would make an exception, are you related to those who think that sites and content on the internet appears from air?

The one thing I don't quite understand is why marketing/ads is an actual thing on the internet. I've never actually clicked an ad, and I don't know anyone who has (unless it was by accident).

I mean, I guess exposure is always nice.

>day in the life of a windows user
>>
>>52191242
not the anon you replied to but let me explain it a bit.
For example we take php. The owner of the site could pull the advertisings and show them, get the cookie from him and send that information back to the advertising-servers. Or if someone clicks on the advertisements, he goes over one php-script from the owner of the page which tells the advertising-servers that someone clicked this or that. It really is fucking easy and you can do this without cookies at all too. Why this isn't done? Because the serverowner could fake the click and send thousand fakeclicks to the advertising-servers to get >more< money from them because 'hurr my stats are real, there really are 10000 people that clicked this".

Advertisers want control over their shit.

Where are they hosting? Only in america can bandwidth be considered "expensive".

>Not blocking all ads under all circumstances

There is no such thing as an acceptable ad, marketing has no place in your home
>>
The solution is the Acceptable Ads.
>So starting in 2011, in consultation withour users, we decided to propose a compromise. Because we share a vision with the majority of our users that not all ads are equally annoying, the Acceptable Ads initiative was created. It allows advertisers and publishers who have agreed to make ads that abide by user-generated criteria to be whitelisted. Users can support this less extreme version of ad blocking by allowing the Acceptable Ads option to remain enabled. To browse completely ad-free, users candisable the option.
>This is beneficial in two ways:
>We hope that the initiative encourages the ad industry to pursue less intrusive ad formats and thus have a positive impact on the Internet as a whole. It provides us with aviable source of revenue, which we need to be able to administer the Acceptable Ads program and continue development of a free product.
>We believe that this initiative is a sustainable middle ground between the user's choice to use ad blockers and the continued need to support free online content with advertisements. In general, an Acceptable Ad is a non-animated ad, clearly labeled as such, that does not interrupt reading flow. It is important to note that these criteria try to reflect the ongoing discussions between our users, publishers, advertisers and us. They will evolve as the web changes and as we receive more feedback.
https://adblockplus.org/acceptable-ads
>>
If it's a site that I regularly use, I usually whitelist it.
If the ads are obnoxious, it goes back on the blocklist.
