why is this allowed?
>Been using Mint for years, system WANTS me to update the perfectly working drivers or some shit - yeah ! go ahead i don't care.
>comes back with a fucked driver.
>try everything
>look at the fucking time
Why do they force users to use actual "free" drivers when the old nvidia proprietary was perfect ? (but removed... support claims
>"it was obsolete anyways"
"but muh fanless 7300GT is all I need to watch webpages and spinnan cu-"
>"hurf a derpf no wonder you and your CRT (eh, it's a LCD ackshually...) we dont support grandpa's obsolete hardware, if you cannot afford something newer you can fuck off"
Nvidia declared it legacy and stopped supporting it in the official driver on newer kernels. With AMD that's not such a big deal because by the time a card is declared legacy the open drivers work better than the proprietary drivers, and Intel makes everything open source from day one.
There's a reason Linus Torvalds did his "fuck you, Nvidia!" rant a few years back.
>>52188816
Proprietary drivers are just fucked up and for obvious reasons, flaws in most cases they are just nono on most distros.
Just go buy an AMD GPU if you <<"NEED">> a 1600x1200 on a >20 inches square monitor.
Also check the documentation there should be a screen scaling function.
>it's nVidia's fault for stuff done by the Linux team
>buy a new GPU
When did /g/ become like this. OP install the old driver from either the repository or nVidia's website.
>>52188923
>it's nVidia's fault for stuff done by the Linux team
Breaking support is Nvidia's fault, nigger. Welcome to proprietery driver. Of course the system would want to have the latest driver installed, but the repository will probably have a legacy driver for cases like yours.
>>52188896
op here, i want to keep my perfectly working hardware, and always been using 1600x1200, the native screens resolution which always been detected. fuck!
>>52188971
but because of a disagreement with the linux community, how is this right to fuck up a perfectly working environment and fuck the users in the end?
i don't give a shit about their shenanigans, the proprietary driver was much better than this shit. for me.
there's not even video acceleration anymore, and compositing is gone. a quad core athlon!
God it's been MONTHS I keep reading this shit.
Anon, are you a gamer or professional who NEED a retina-burning resolution?
>uh, nope, I just have an OCD about numbers not matching...
Then get that fixed.
>wait I do am a gamer
Get a Modern PC running Windows.
>NO! I'm a very proffeshunal designer and need accurate pixels
Get a Mac.
Seriously I cant stand users like you. You're a complete moron, unsupported drivers leaves security faults. You should be happy we're keeping up to fucking date, what nVidia won't do.
>>52189027
According to your pic, you are offered 1280x1024, which should be more than standard HD.
Also I would not recommend any1 to follow advices and copying random xrandr commands on a terminal, it does not work, accept it and deal with it, 1280x1024 should be your new years resolution.
And yes, people with obsolete shit are literally a cancer. Hope it'll break soon.
>>52188816
Don't use the new kernel then, you fucking retard.
>>52189228
>implying we have such a choice
force-feding Linux distros... Never again.
>>52189172
people like you should be shot. My freedom also implies the freedom to use nonfree drivers, provided by the creators of hardware. a task that you software engineers cannot compete with.
they make electronics. They write the software that's adapted to the electronics and I'm glad I've paid the people for this. You make code, incomplete code but claim you're better because you made it, and for free., but it's shitty.
and in your blind opposition to >evil nVidia corporation protecting their work, you feel entitled to force your scribblings on everyone. that's the problem with your system that's close to socialism, instead of true freedom.
>>52189316
>b8ing this hard
Nice try.
>>52189130
okay you know what? you're right. started dling a win7 iso 64butts.
for you

Now wait a minute...
From a driver and performance standpoint, would an nVidia or AMD GPU be a better purchase for someone looking to build a new Linux machine?
>AMD
>drivers
>>52189482
Don't buy a computer. its hardware is usually full of patented and nonfree stuff.
>>52189512
Yeah, my question was serious.
>>52189482
I think AMD was the one that's working well with the linux team fwir
>>52189520
How well do their proprietary drivers work in GNU/Linux?
Free drivers are shit try to see if you can download on nvidias webpages. I use Linux, but don't game on it or have good resolution. And people here who CAN fix it is under the impression that having a shit driver and taking away the freedom of the user is good as long as it's not proprietary drivers. Try on irc. /g/ is either unhelpful experts who won't see the point of helping someone with proprietary preferences due to autism or children using Windows.
>>52189536
if I remember right the performance is generally better with nvidia, but the actual support is better with amd, but I could be wrong
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/3i8pi1/amd_vs_nvidia_linux_gaming_performance/
>>52188816
Op, just buy a used hd 5770.
It'll be so much faster, it's dirt cheap, and the open source drivers are amazing.
>>52189622
>5770 for basic office stuff
JUST
>>52188816
Why don't you just fucking pin the driver version that works?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PinningHowto
>>52188816
>Why do they force users to use actual "free" drivers when the old nvidia proprietary was perfect ?
Becuase nVidia stopped supporting your hardware and no longer releases drive updates for it, this means no newer kernel versions.
You can continue using your old driver, if you continue using an older kernel.
I'm afraid, if you don't like it, cry to nvidia - they are the people who have caused this issue for you.
>>52189643
5770 is a great GPU.
Especially when you can grab 2 for 60 dollars.
found a way! Fucking with xrandr the RIGHT way, not the >works for me herp i keep getting.
startup script .sh :
xrandr --newmode "1600x1200_60.00" 161.00 1600 1712 1880 2160 1200 1203 1207 1245 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DVI-I-1 "1600x1200_60.00"
xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --mode "1600x1200_60.00"
that should force it as a workaroudn but next time i'll reinstall everything and turn all autoupdates off. Mint Ptera, Mate, and that's all.
It's neither fault of Linux, nor Mint you dumb fuck.
When Nvidia/AMD says they don't want to support your hardware in the new kernel releases, you're done.
I had to say goodbye to proprietary drivers of my ATI card back in the 2.6 kernel version.
This is why reverse-engineered open source drivers are so important even if you don't use them at the moment.
Companies don't make money supporting hardware they jewed you on for 10 years.
>>52189910
forcing unsupported modes and resolutions
>script on startup
Don't do that.
>>52189980
why not, it works perfectly, just leaving it on /g/ in case anyone else have the same problem
CVT command will return the real capabilities of the hardware
XRANDR will set things.
>>52190045
I do not fuck with X server or Xrandr nor should a noob like you.
You just cant deal with something that will work just fine, like you need that deskspace, and worst of all now you encourage other noobs to use a dirty script to get it done, it's hilarious!
It is far from working perfectly, Christ! upgrade your crap, any Modern AMD will do.
>>52189962
And that is why I use my hd 5770 on Linux with open source drivers.
You can't get shit like this on windows. Not that I'd need it since I don't play games.
>>52190117
>"free" as in freedom, but don't ever do what you want with your machine! oh nonono!
it works. you should be happy.
>>52190231
>You can't get shit like this on windows.
Of course.
More potential users of the hardware, more money and time goes into proper implementation of the drivers.
and most important
Microsoft doesn't make any changes to the kernel of an already released windows version if it's not absolutely necessary.
Windows wouldn't be what it is today if not legacy support.
>>52188816
Just use a deprecated driver while it works.
nVidia supports its GPUs for far more time than AMD anyway.
>>52189482
Intel would be best. They have at least a dozen people employed and working on open source drivers for their GPUs.
>>52190337
Windows's generic display drivers are actually solid, all versions supports even recent GPUs.
IT is a severe mistake to fuck the users like this, forcing something barely tested because it's free, as >>52189316
Hardware is proprietary, like it or don't, if it works, you don't fuck with it.
They're assholes? Ignore that as long it works.
>>52189516
Thinkpad.
