Why do you own an Nvidia video card?

Nvidia is what all games are made for AMD is more for word processing
>>
Because I fell for all the shilling.
>>
Because I work with 3D modelling and NVIDIA basically owns the market. Everything has CUDA acceleration and is optimized for NVIDIA cards.

Got a 970 because it was on sale at Microcenter plus it came with a game, got a second one for kicks and giggles.

I'm going to be getting one next year at the rate AMD is pissing me off with their cards. Fucking crimson drivers now giving me a BSOD and had to reinstall my lan drivers since somehow they were fucking taking up the same memory space as the crimson control panel after a fresh install using DDU. It worked fine for a few weeks, and now it's shit.

I don't
>>
>>52185461
Doesn't matter. I had an AMD card and it had a lot of issues, specially with shaders and materials for Maya, since a lot of them are created using a NVIDIA tool. Also rendering with AMD is just shit.
>>
Because I had a specific problem with a HD 4870 AND a HD 7870 and I decided to never buy ATI/AMD video cards again. I might take a look at them again this summer if they fix their power usage bullshit but probably not.

just out of curiosity, what was the problem? I'm still using my 4870 in my current machine that was great when i built it like 6 years ago and still manages to be one-step-above-toaster-level to this day with anything that doesn't require dx11.

I was always more of an AMD and ATI guy before, but I switched over to Intel and Nvidia. It seemed more reliable from reading stuff. ATI cards used to be cheaper for pretty good performance but it went downhill.

Because, apart from this 980ti strix, I've never bought a card brand new and thus avoid the inflated RRPs and brand new tax, making nvidia far more tempting.

>>
I will always buy Nvidia™ because I only play games The Way It's Meant to be Played™. Nvidia also pioneers innovative new technologies like PhysX™, Gameworks™ and the highest quality driver to ever grace Windows.

When I boot up with a brand new Nvidia™ Geforce™, I can experience the game just like it's mean to be played. Nvidia™ also delivers a far more silkysmooth experience.

Nvidia Geforce™ is also very power efficient. A graphic card is the most power hungry device in your house. Refrigerators, air conditioners, water heaters, dish washers, lights, etc all use significantly less power than a graphic card. Which is why Nvidia™ puts gamers first by ensuring that their gaming experience is of the highest quality while looking out for gamers by giving them the most value in their electrical bill.

At this point in time, there's really no reasons to consider an AMD graphic card at all. I tried one one time, it caused so much heat that it exploded. It also consumed so much power that it gave on an EMP and destroyed the rest of my computer.

Nvidia™ also pioneered how useless GPGPU is with CUDA™. Years ago, everyone thought GPGPU, CUDA™, and OpenCL were the future. Now, Nvidia™ has removed those useless features from their GPUs and increased efficiency. Now you can save thousands a year in electricity thanks to Nvidia™ ensuring that useless features like GPGPU are "optimized" for gamers.

It's quite clear that OP's an AMD shill trying to convince you to settle on something less than The Way It's Mean to be Played™. Nvidia™ is the only real way to play games. We have seen recently that they offer incredible libraries for software developers like Nvidia Gameworks. He is probably too poor to afford the Nvidia Geforce Experience and can not afford to play any games The Way It's Mean To be Played™.

Don't be a poor gamer with bad drivers and a huge power bill. Play games with the Geforce™ Experience™: The Way It's Mean To Be Played™

Here ya go.

I saw the Dawn demo live when it was first shown way back at COMDEX 2002 over at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Was an invite-only affair with a lot of true eggheads and basically when they fired up the system to demo the Geforce and Dawn appeared, there wasn't a limp dick in the place.

I prefer Nvidia cards because ATI/AMD just can't make drivers to save their lives, and because I only use Quadro hardware I know I'll have support from Nvidia in case I actually need it with superior performance and support over the Geforce consumer level bullshit.

Simple.

HAHAHA, fell for that power consumption bullshit. That card was an overpriced and under powered piece of garbage. Even today the 7970/7950 can provide an adequate gameplay experience at 1080p while that green pile of shit can't run most games cause of Vram bottlenecks.

Face it, Nvidia are masters of advertising and they get hordes of people to spend money on inferior hardware time and time again.

7970 is superior to 680
290x is superior to 780/ titan/ 780 ti

only decent card Nvidia has made in recent times is the 980 Ti. Everything else is overpriced garbage and you'd be better off buying red.

Fucking this, nvidrones had literally donated money to nvidia to let them make a decent card after years of REAL housefires, overly-advertised meme cards (like 560ti and 460) and overall inferiority regarding price/performance ratio. The consequence now is that the only concurrence that keeps prices low risks bankrupt because they can't make money even with good cards. I don't.

270X was cheaper than the nVidia equivalent.
Also came with a free $60 game that I actually wanted.
So far the drivers have given me 0 problems (I didn't upgrade to Crimson yet though, is that thing still frying cards every once in a blue moon?)
Also Mantle was a plus back when I bought it, and while it's basically ded now the 270X has DX12 support.

I don't have anything against nVidia, however. If they're the better choice next time I'm looking to buy a card, I'll go with them.

I bounce between the cards depending on what the machine is for, if I'm building a cheap machine to do a specific thing then it's probably going to be AMD all the way.
For my gaming PC, Intel and Nvidia have the best numbers so they go in the machine.

Brand loyalty, "teams", or how the companies in question behave don't factor into my hardware choices. I just buy the thing I need for what I want to do.

People who buy Nvidia/Intel for everything are just retarded fanboys, and people who do the same for AMD are retarded fanboys with a hint of special snowflake.

It's a big shame that Dawn is associated with the GeForce FX - the worst series of cards ever released by Nvidia.

Fermi may have been a housefire and expensive but at least it had pretty good performance.

Geforce FX combined high price, low performance and housefire in the one package.

I choose Nvidia for their Linux support.

Could anyone who's more familiar with graphics card options tell me whether buying the card I'm thinking of is a terrible mistake?

I'm looking at this: GeForce GT 730 Silent BRK 1GB

It's the "1GB" part that worries me. It's inexpensive, it's in stock locally, it doesn't have a fan to break down, and it should work with my computer, so I want it. But it has half the memory of what's common in other low-end video cards.

Is the 1GB model a trap? Or is 1GB plenty on a low-end card?

By using the same components in their consumer units and their professional supercomputer stuff, used for instance by SpaceX to model their rocket engines, they're able to provide higher performance at lower price, by dividing the cost of their technology between industry and consumers.

If you could reprogram their cards to perform like the industrial version, the revenue from their industrial pricing would vanish. They can't just absorb that loss. The consumers would get higher prices, lower performance, poorer drivers, etc.

The industrial market is key to understanding Nvidia. It's why their devices tend to be more power-hungry, and they put a greater emphasis on driver development: their hardware is more general-purpose, or derived from more general-purpose designs. Becoming fully supportive of open source would change the character of the company, possibly to the point that it couldn't survive.

Bullshit. Intel is balls deep in open source video drivers. AMD is getting pretty close and will likely eventually replace their proprietary driver with the open source one. Nvidia on the other hand is openly hostile against open source.

I had a GTS450 which came for free with the computer that i got as payment for building a new one for a friend but I got an R9 270 for a hundred bucks. The R9 obviously gives me better performance. So I'm, for the first time since I had a Radeon 9600, back in the AMD camp.

If you're not playing AAA games then Intel is pretty adequate for most games. They've come a long way in the past few years. Obviously it's no Fury X or 980 Ti, but their drivers are open source and just fucking work.

I like Gameworks and Physx effects.
Had a 7870OC before my current Nvidia card and sure, not every title uses them - but when they do, I damn missed them.

They look good, feel good.
CUDA is also cool.
I can also use FreeBSD and Linux without a hassle, because Nvidia can into drivers.

Because I want to kill the market. I love supporting moneyhatting, I love companies literally lying to their customers, false marketing, overpricing and selling your products with a 150 % list price. I love how they fuck up all games with terrible tessellation and plug-ins so AMD users can't play them without ridiclous FPS. So even a terrible 670 has more FPS than a 290, even though the latter has twice as many steam processors and RAM which makes it ridiculous, eh, awesome. See pic. I love how they side with Ubisoft and now Bethesda, literally the two most incompetent developers out there. I like how they support all the unpolished, disgusting Assassin's Creed games which are nearly unplayable and how they brought us Batman, the biggest mess in the history of PC ports. While AMD supported games like Alien, Just Cause 2 or Battlefield were perfectly playable for everyone back then.

And of course I love the braindead underage fanbase that just buy every nasty shit and prestige object, even a fucking PS4. Nvidia forever.

> no drivers for Linux/BSD
The Catalyst driver sucks big time on Linux, and on BSD there is no driver.
Meanwhile I had SLI support on FreeBSD with two Geforce 7600.
With one fucking install command, they worked perfectly. On BSD.

> TressFX is the only "physx/gameworks killer" AMD introduced
And it looks like ass. It looks unnatural, weird.
If they can really develop similar looking effects and shit, do so.
But so far, they demonstrated absolutely nothing.

> open source meme
AMD started this open-source shit years ago when they released specs so people will have a fully featured driver on Linux.
This - of course - never happened.
The current 'open' Radeon driver is developed by one guy mainly, and it sucks big time.
Full of quirks, bugs. It's like "nv" for nvidia, provides a basic feature set.

Should be fine.
It's a solid GPU with dx12 and all the fancy shit, so yeah it will be a good base for the next upgrade whenever that comes.

By the way I would still buy a big ass 1080p TV (40" or so) instead of tiny displays.
You can work on them, you can play on them, etc.

Most cheapo (not smart but LED/LCD) TVs have 120Hz refresh rate now on 1080p.
What's not to love?

Ps.: Don't try to play CS:GO ESL/ESEA on this, of course.
But for COD and pretty much any game, it works.
If you have the space.
>>

Because my 1366x768 TV is mounted at the end of my bed, and with my glasses off, my eyesight isn't good enough for any resolution higher than that at that distance. I can see everything just fine at 1366x768. Any higher, and I'm struggling.
>>
>>52207571
everything is fine then.
I have a 1080p panel in my laptop but I play on 1366 too because of muh FPS.

last time I bought a gaymen laptop.
sure they are stronk, compared to a laptop.
but meh, a simple GTX970 fitted PC would obliterate my laptop.

tl;dr: ATI sucks and their drivers suck worse.

That's changing, but I'll consider ATI when their open-source drivers get good and with an absolutely (and I mean ABSO-fuckin'-LUTELY "sudo apt-get install ati-drivers") trivial install.
>>
>>52208383
one big fucking issue I had with Linux and gaming is that I could not exit if the game crashed.
like Nexuiz froze, and I had a black screen, and stuck sound.

now on Windows, the game just crashes. or just stops, you can alt-tab, close it.
not on Linux, it just stayed there. since it grabbed my screen, and input both, there was no way out.

1) you can use the magic sysrq combination, but you will lose every work and shit
2) you can use ssh or something similar from your phone, but your xorg work will still disappear

... I mean it's fucking 2015+1 now.
I really hope Wayland and XWayland will fix this.
