Alright /g/, can I get a genuine, unbiased list of the pros and cons of Windows 10?

I'm not big on privacy because most of what I use is what you'd consider a botnet, so just give me a list of pros and cons without going full privacyfag on me.
>>
>>52175703
Depending on uses, it's fine.

Biggest complaint is Edge. It kind of works, but when a script breaks, the browser tends to just close. Not just the tab, but the whole process stack.

I like the idea of Azure AD integration out of the box though.

Really up to you I suppose.
>>

>>52175703
It's absolute fucking shit, the UI is unresponsive as fuck, and I can't even do anything without it freezing for like 20 seconds
>>
>>52177386
Sounds like a hardware problem.

Another case of the software being willing but the hardware being week, eh?
>>
>>52177426
It's not a hardware problem, Win 7 ran smoothly with my hardware before I updated to Win 10. Now, I can't even open a fucking image file and the Start button doesn't work
>>
I've got Anti beacon installed, done all the /g/ guides and installed Tor and several privacy add ons for Firefox.

Have I missed anything ?
>>
>>52175703
It's unfinished. It's like a public beta. If you are going to use it, expect some stuff to break or not work. The backward compatibility can be great or terrible depending on software you use. The interface is a bit shitty. Also, Microsoft is using Windows 10 computers to send updates to each other which is the biggest problem for me.
>>
>>52177647
>start button failure
I actually had this happen to me. When trying to get a solution on the 'support forums,' after their basic suggestions didn't work they just kinda ignored me. The issue actually followed me through several reinstalls, but every time I migrated all my user data forward. Didn't save this last time save for my emails and now it finally works again.
>>
10 is best windows
8.1 is almost just as good
7 is a bit outdated but still good
XP is outdated but still ok
>>
>>52177726
Wow that used to follow me too in the beta. Finally gave up and went back to Win7.
>>
>>52175703
Good OS overall, but many botnet/security/annoyance features. Pretty much all of it can be disabled. Some of the more annoying things like Windows Defender have to be disabled with group policy or registry tweaks. Updates can only be stopped by disabling the Windows Update service entirely.
>>
>>52177726
>>52177647
>start button failure
I had this problem in preview builds very close to release. Start button should work after restarting Explorer.exe
>>
>>52177647
That's what happens when people use shit hardware. You wanna go back to Windows 95 and have a super fast OS and nothing else? Didn't think so.
>>
>>52177726
The problem probably has something to with user account settings since I only get this problem with my administrator account.

I'm trying to create a new admin account and see what happens
>>
>>52177788
I was really fucking close. But I run all my video and stuff through plex, and all the exe clients are piles of shit and the only good on is actually in the app store. That and there is a podcast client in there I like.

>>52177824
And when the button couldn't work, not even that did anything. Reading up on it, there are a bunch of different failure modes....

>>52177869
That actually did work to get the start menu back, but mine ran super fucking deep to where I couldn't even get the settings window open. Something in my user data, and getting rid of it all worked a treat.
>>
>>52175703
Run it on your gaming machine
Run *nix on everything else

Why the fuck is this even a question

Does everybody just throw out their old desktop when they upgrade?

Since when were we all limited to a single machine at our battlestations?
Especially those of us that are supposed to be security conscious?
>>

OP if you're still there:

- Kind of slow. People say it's faster than 7 or 8 but honestly it feels less responsive to me. Boots much faster than 7 but it doesn't really shut down either.
- Forced updates are fucking awful
- Compatibility problems with games
- Worse UI all around, and the stupid dual control panels etc are still there
- Ugly as sin, basically looks like it was made with the Paint fill tool, and oh my god the icons
- Compatibility problems with older games that work fine on Win7
- Bugs - I have a tablet with win10 and it often goes in a "faulty" state where you can't tap on some control, or a side bar doesn't go away, etc. Didn't have these problems on Win8.

Mine goes faster than 8.1 at least.
> Forced updates are fucking awful
WUMT
> Compatibility problems with games
Far less than you could have in Win 7/8 trying to run older games.
> Worse UI all around, and the stupid dual control panels etc are still there
True.
> Ugly as sin, basically looks like it was made with the Paint fill tool, and oh my god the icons
Personal opinion. I believe next release will bring some extra customization options.
> Compatibility problems with older games that work fine on Win7
As I said above, I've had less trouble in Win10 than with 7 running shit like muh japanese VNs or games that existed before 2005.
> Bugs - I have a tablet with win10 and it often goes in a "faulty" state where you can't tap on some control, or a side bar doesn't go away, etc. Didn't have these problems on Win8.
I can't really say I've had many bugs of this kind. Anyway, I'm just here to share an almost complete opposite experience than your, just for anon to have more stuff to think.

You absolutely can't disable the telemetry no matter what people tell you, even on enterprise edition. When you use Windows 10, Microsoft will be constantly keeping an eye on your computer, with a unique id that never changes.
>>
>>52178037
Even the setting in a fresh account didn't work. It was weird, fixed now, but if it happens again I dunno what I'm gonna do. Can't run 7 because I don't think you can boot it from an NVMe. 8.1 makes me sad because start screen. Like too much windows software to use Linux. Sad times ahead for paco.

>>52178076
>As I said above, I've had less trouble in Win10 than with 7 running shit like muh japanese VNs or games that existed before 2005.
Well the whole post was just my personal experiences. I remember Toy Story 2 and Silent Hill 2 (emulated) not working no matter what, they used to work on Win7.

The bugs were pretty much only on the tablet. Dunno what's up with that.
>>
>>52177943
~90% disagreement

- Kind of slow.
Nope. Easily 130% faster here from 7, and half as much faster from 8.

- Forced updates are fucking awful
It's a security thing not aimed at residential users, blame lazy corporations.

- Compatibility problems with games
As with every new windows version but if it worked with 8 it works with 10 so far. Otherwise make a 7 or XP dual boot or virtualmachine for retro.

- Worse UI all around, and the stupid dual control panels etc are still there
Agreed but the W7 panels are still there.

- Ugly as sin, basically looks like it was made with the Paint fill tool, and oh my god the icons
Eh

- Compatibility problems with older games that work fine on Win7
Dualboot/virtualmachine

- Bugs - I have a tablet with win10 and it often goes in a "faulty" state where you can't tap on some control, or a side bar doesn't go away, etc. Didn't have these problems on Win8.
Fixed bugs I was having with Win8.
Seems to be hardware luck for most people on these.

I have better shit to do than fuck with constantly removing all the spyware Microsoft adds with each new update on multiple Windows 10 computers. Nonsense, my mother use ubuntu as her first OS ever and she does fine even though she don't really like tech. She can read her news and emails. Nothing ever breaks. When she had xp on her computer on the other hand I had to install teamviewer and do tech support all the time. Linux is way more stable than windows, which is why they use Linux on the space station. they can't have something like windows that breaks all the time.

I use it on my desktop for playing games and watching movies on my t.v. And only because it will just werk and I don't want to have to fuck with something if i just wanna watch a movie. Most everything else I do in linux.

I like it fine because it werks for what i want it to do and hasn't really done anything annoying to me yet.

Only thing annoying is cortana and privacy settings. Seems like everytime it updates i need to re opt out of whatever terms and conditions for cortana and change some privacy settings. Also it keeps uninstalling speccy which is fucking dumb.
>>
>>52178610
I dunno linux can be stable. but updates can fuck it up. i woldnt call it more stable than windows. i neve rhave issues with windows. i would never have issues with debian either. every distro is different.

>>52177647
I remember that bug, an update causes that. It corrupts the start menu database and you will have to delete it to fix it. That removes all icons from the menu but it fixes the slowdowns. I went back to Win8.1 after that shit.

>>52178250
Having 5 separate devices to perform tasks that can be done with one isn't crazy at all
>>
Pros:
* It does feel faster. It's mostly UI tricks rather than reality, but it works
* I thought I'd hate the redesigned UI, but I don't - it's fine
* Seems stable enough

Cons:
* There is a RIDICULOUS amount of shit you have to do to turn it into a usable OS from a vanilla install - editing group policies, making registry edits, uninstalling stupid bloatware, changing settings
* If you don't have Enterprise, I would not recommend Win10 due to privacy concerns
* Pinning things to the start menu pins them as "live tiles" - 60% of my start menu is blank because I turned off the "most used programs" setting and I can't put anything there
* There's some driver flakiness on my laptop. Can't tell if that's intel's fault or Microsoft's
* No way to alt+tab to desktop anymore - have you use Win+M or Win+D

If you're thinking about upgrading from Win7, I wouldn't. If you are like me and bought new hardware where drivers aren't available for Win7, install Enterprise, rip out the shitware, and it's fine

The games complaint kind of depends on the games in question. I've had better luck with some games that 8/8.1 gave me issues with, like the PC version of Silent Hill 2 which had issues with forcing a single thread for me on Win8 or Sonic Adventure DX (2005) which had problems with trying to force VSync, but a few have weird screen sync issues like Bunny Must Die where the game looks like it's jittering.

I think the new start menu is worth all the hassle, plus:

- UI orientation is a lot better than 8/8.1
- Search function is actually decent fast compared to how slow W7 was
- Backwards compability is better than expected, still not W7 tier
- Store for apps, though 99% of them completely suck there are still 1% that are better than other options and its very convenient for the user
- Activity monitor and file browser have seen some nice updates

But its still a microsoft product at its core, design flaws that we commonly know are still there, getting error messages and stuff is still there, annoying updates that fixes one thing and brakes two others in the process. Things that don't make sense are still there etc.

And its a relatively young product as well. Stability isn't a strength at this point and expect to reinstall immediately after you upgrade and once or twice after that to fix certain random issues as noted within in this thread, best thing you can do to increase your chances of stability is to only move over simple files likes documents or images etc.

As for the botnet thingy, its less noticeable than on Android devices and I haven't seen any adds or the like outside of the store app. Network performance haven't seen any major change compared to how it was before I upgraded from W7 to W10.

I think W10 is more about personal taste and for how much you are willing to tolerate. Much better than W8 though.
