Hi guys.

I installed Linux (Xubuntu) today but I'm having a bit of a problem.

When I try to upload images to here (using Chromium) there are no thumbnails. In addition, they're really really small.

Any way to enable thumbnails and make them bigger?

Thanks.

I saved a few pics from the front page to demonstrate. Pic related.
>>
Xubuntu uses a GUI toolkit called GTK. The feature you're looking for (and that is absent) is specific to GTK. There are ways for developers to add thumbnails to the file picker, but for some reason it's absent from most GTK applications. People have been asking the Gnome developers to implement thumbnail support for ~11 years, and they haven't - because they're a bunch of intensely incompetent fuckwits.

As far as I know, which file chooser to open is entirely up to the application developers. So, some applications will use the GTK one, some will use the Qt one, some will use the KDE one.

For more info, here's the bug report from 11 years ago:

What? It shows a preview of images in Chromium. Are you talking about seeing large thumbnails like Windows 7?

Yeah the big images like in Windows. Although I'm not even getting the small previews that you're getting.

I am using Xubuntu 15.10 with the generic packages. Try changing your theme and icons in the settings to Numix or something.

Xubuntu uses GTk.It does'nt have that.If you are looking for that use KDE.Or maybe LXQt(Never tried the later though)

KDE 4.x was beautiful and fun to use. Plasma 5 is the embodiment of bloat and takes forever to boot even on an SSD. Constant bugs and system crashing when I try to make cosmetic changes to the UI. Very disappointing because it looks sexy.
>>
You can also just drag and drop files from the default file manager. Not a fix but at least you don't need KDE.

>>52170210
4 was pretty bloat too, but at least more consistent. Something about 5 still feels unfinished, more than just bugs.

There is a patch for gtk2 library in AUR for example. But it's a bit glitchy. Also, you can use that patch on other distros of course. IIRC arch users are forced to patch thumbnailer also which is cause some glitches (plain grey desktop), but if you just patch gtk, then it will be ok (except that you should view pictures in FM for thumbnails appearing in chooser).
Sorry for my derpy engrish btw.

Dragging and dropping the picture into the file upload is how its done. If you know about this it works just as well, which is probably why nobody seems to car enough to fix it.

I personally find the fact that you cant do this (drag files into upload) in Windows more annoying, cause it means that you often have to navigate back to the directory you are currently using wheyou want to upload something.
>>
>>52170038
>and they haven't - because they're a bunch of intensely incompetent fuckwits.
Because it isn't heavily demanded. Online services typically tell users to drag and drop their images onto a box, and GNOME provides an online account system that allows you to upload your photos to facebook/google/flickr/whatever through your image management application.

The fact adding an image to a post on 4chan is probably the best example of why this feature is needed should tell you exactly why there is no rush to add this code upstream.

To me its not really an issue, I use Linux on my workstation. Not having gigantic thumbnails for shitposting is the least of my concerns. It shows the preview of image anyway.
>>
>>52170210
>takes forever to boot
This is deliberate for some reason.
Disable splash screen and shape like 15 seconds off the boot.
>>
Op, Im using KDE these days, thumbnails are better There and it works fine otherwise. No slower to boot than xfce from what I can notice.
>>
>>52172041\
Having thumbnails in the file picker is also useful for people who use Photo Editing or illustration programs such as gimp or Krita a lot. Since Krita is starting to gain a lot of popularity among artists maybe GTK developers should think about implementing that.

>>52172182
It's sad. The thumbnail issue and the fact that in nautilus I can't drag and highlight items to select them in list mode is one of my main issues with GTK based distros.

Windows users should rather care about getting Microsoft to fix their own shitty file uploader. You still can't just drop something into the file upload dialogue, instead it will try to move the file into that directory, whoever thought this was useful in any way deserves to be shot.

Every time when I want to upload something I have to navigate to the fucking directory, even though I HAVE ALREADY OPENED IT.

Its kind of sad that at this point the only OS that has a proper file upload is OSX.

If you want modern features, use a modern desktop like kde.
If you want to use something lightweigt, use a filemanager + browser when you upload things.
gtk could really use a good file manager.
If you have ever used a kde application, no user would want anything else.
The only way to fix the whole toolkit bullshit is to make it modular so you just call the system file dialog instead of calling the qt file picker or the gtk file picker.

I am too lazy to force this through so who is with me?

Xubuntu is a meme we intentionally let spread on /g/ in order to detect and mock newfags. XFCE is outdated and barely usable.

Now that you fell for the meme and you've been thru enough pain, install the actual best *buntu out there: Ubuntu MATE. All those problems will go away.

The point is that its *not supported* by the actual upload dialogue, which would make it work *everywhere* not just through shitty workarounds in specific applications.

You seem to be confused between file chooser and upload button generated by the browser.

Now that is just apologism. Again, all other platforms file choosers do this just fine. Why wouldn't you just accept that its a shortcoming of the windows file chooser?
