Budget building a computer for a loved one, whats a good card that'll be able to play most things on medium/high for the next 2-3 years?
looking at Nvidia atm, 960 a bit too pricey, but 750 seems way too old.

750ti will do for the most part. It's just new enough that it's optimized for DX11, and good enough for most if not all DX9 games.
I also feel like a dual core just wont do it anymore.
The price on i3s are enticing but I feel like anything but an i5 would be a bad idea as far as future proofing goes.
Any thoughts?
I've never had any luck with AMD performance, and I wouldnt even know the equivalent CPU.
I heard good things about the FX 8350 but I dont wanna get a mobo with a shitty socket.

Get a 260X or 270, and for the CPU, get a Haswell i5
270 beats the 750 and it's cheap. Use 20% coupon on Jet for whatever vard and enjoy.
