Decided to make 2016 the year I took my privacy more seriously.
Downgraded to Windows 7 and spent the whole week encrypting my drives with BitLocker. What are some more (realistic) steps I can take to help secure my privacy?

im usually not the 'install linux ' guy but
if you want to take privacy seriously use Linux with LUKS.

Use a VPN or Tor.

If you really want privacy, I don't think Windows would be the best option.

It's also useful to have MSSQL installed incase your Bitlocker key is compromised.

You fucking idiot

> and spent the whole week encrypting my drives with BitLocker.

Proprietary encryption software? Don't be stupid, Microsoft have backdoors and access to your stuff anyway because Bitlocker have a backdoor by design. (Which is why they don't dare showing people the source code because then everyoe would have access to the backdoor) At some point a criminal is going to get the backdoor or figure it out.

> What are some more (realistic) steps I can take to help secure my privacy?

On Windows 7? avoid connecting it to the internet. It has the same problems regarding security as Windows 10 does now. And soon enough nothing will work on windows 7 and you need windows 10 anyway. If you want privacy then use Linux, then you have full control over your own system. Use windows for gaming and the windows applications you strictly need. Just dual boot it (install both at once and choose which one to start when booting up your machine. The mint and ubuntu page have a easy explaination of how this is done and it's fairly simple, but still take backup of important files)

Using VPN or Tor on Windows is a waste of time. It's like putting on a mask inside a bank after talking to the cashier, best case it just looks suspicious. But if you ever do something they don't like then it's over. Also criminals might still get your info because stuff is saved and sent to microsoft. For example depending on what updates you install you will send information to microsoft every time you open and close a image file. what that information is, is unknown at the moment. but someone who hacks into the microsoft servers will know a lot about you, and it is likely easier to do than hacking Tor or a VPN to get at what you look at.
>>
Start hashing your encryption passwords with SHA-256
Install Linux
TOR browser
hack neighbours wifi with wire shark/aircrack and use it instead
VPN
7 proxies
Good luck OP

I'd post more but the inevitable response is going to be the same fucking "post ur ssn/passwurds then, faggut", you only need one bad excuse versus a million good opportunities to be a loser I guess.

There were times when job application sites sold me out to other sites without my permission, but it was for actually good offers that got me interviews. I remember this homeless guy (has money just got thrown out) on this board a while back complaining that an apartment search site put a cookie of his zip code in his browser and other apartment search sites knew where he was without input, again he was complaining about this. Uh... you're homeless? You actually wanted this in the first place? congrats on your new self importance.

Only thing you need to worry about is wifi and GPU. Broadcom/Ralink/Mediatek ones are prone to issues especially those with a combo bluetooth adapter hybrid alongside the wifi adapter.

GPU wise AMD cards are as good as useless. Nvidia has some drivers for Linux. The best is ofcourse Intel GPU's, I want to get a 5th Gen i5 with Iris Pro to enjoy the 4.2 kernel.
>>
>>52169926
Most of the standard hardware should be picked up automatically. Graphics cards drivers usually get sorted too. It's fairly plug and play these days if you use a mainstream distro like Ubuntu.

Only thing that may cause issues are specialist hardware like Avid audio controllers or something.

Tails is super secure, but just like Kali it's one of those distros you use on USB and has ONE specific job it does. You are doing the right thing by wanting another distro.

You can use any distribution like Mint or Ubuntu, but if you get the normal Unity Ubuntu, then turn off Amazon search if you worry about Amazon seeing what you search on your computer http://www.howtogeek.com/126995/how-to-disable-the-amazon-search-ads-in-ubuntus-unitydash/

No other version of Ubuntu (xubuntu, kubuntu, lubuntu or ubuntu gnome) have that. But Ubuntu and mint are easiest to get into and I as a linux veteran also use Ubuntu.
>>
>>52169978
>>GPU wise AMD cards are as good as useless. Nvidia has some drivers for Linux. The best is ofcourse Intel GPU's, I want to get a 5th Gen i5 with Iris Pro to enjoy the 4.2 kernel.
It's Linux... I fail to see the use for gaming cards. If I had a workstation card, I would be concerned, but I don't so I don't care about that. I have a Realtek ethernet chip so if it doesn't work then I'm not going to waste my time with Linux.

I game on Linux on my laptop with Intel Graphics, it works pretty well.

As for the Wifi, there is a workaround for it, I discovered it by accident. Just make your Wifi connection hidden from your router/modem settings. Then in the Linux network manager, select connect to hidden network and it will work properly without losing connection every 10 seconds.

>I game on Linux on my laptop with Intel Graphics, it works pretty well.
You play TF2. You don't play games.
>>
>>52170062
I've used with Ubuntu before (10.04, 12.04, 14.04 LTS) but never gave up windows completely because I was still gaming.
Now that I don't game anymore, I guess it's time for a change. Should I bother with the Ubuntu Privacy Remix at all or is that one of those distro that was made for a specific job?

>Should I bother with the Ubuntu Privacy Remix at all

Not known to me, sorry. Likely is something like tails. But you might know more about WHY and HOW your privacy is protected if you do your own configurations and set ups. But ubuntu or mint (look at mint with Cinnamon, it's good looking) is way more secure out of the box than Windows. You would already made it much harder for everyone. And would avoid a lot of the normal mass surveillance by default.
>>
>>52169571
>Decided to make 2016 the year I took my privacy more seriously.

Why? Do you have something to hide?
>>
>>52170225
You need to work a bit harder to get malware, you won't get that from normal use or by installing software from the default repositories. You need to make a genuine effort and look for porn apps for linux or even program it yourself. It IS technically possible to get malware on linux even if it requires a bit of work.

Outlawing encryption or any kind of math is a waste of time because people know it or can figure it out by just logic. And it might be impossible to notice. Say encryption is outlawed, how can they check? And how much encryption? Will people be jailed when they say "topkek" instead of "very funny" since it's a 'culturally encrypted code'? Or is it just the maths involved that is illegal? What operations exactly? Factorization? Well, better not teach children multiplication then, because then they know that 3*2=6 and that 3 and 2 is factors of 6. That is gateway encryption towards harder stuff.

wtf... how is Kali more secure than any normal distro? It's a ATTACK vector, not for defence.

>-Leach off neighbors Wifi (Wireshark)
Have you used wireshark? It's not a hacking tool, it analyses the network

> -Glary utilities to wipe cache and history (do weekly)
That's for Windows, that's like washing a piece of shit in a attempt to avoid the shit getting dirty. It IS what you are trying to wash off. The cache and history is safely saved elsewhere.

>-In Windows use PeerBlock, TOR, Firefox with adblock and proxy add-ons

Windows with TOR, that's like putting on a mask in a bank after giving your adress to the cashier. You might get the attention of your local NSA, but how is that going to help you when your computer is recording what you are doing locally and sending it to the windows servers?

Someone might use wireshark and intercept all packages your computer sends out to windows servers and at some point someone might figure out how to interpret it. Using TOR on windows is a false sense of security.
